To be fair a lot of black people in the Netherlands still support the Black Pete (Zwarte Piet) character. I had an old coworker (black guy from Suriname) get really angry at white Dutch people once protesting the Black Pete thing. Said they were ruining his kid's holiday. In a nutshell the lore is: Sinterklaas (Catholic bishop which is what Santa is based on) freed Morish slaves, and they were thankful to him. They help him each year to bring presents to good Dutch kids. They come down from Spain in a steamship filled with presents. Sinterklaas has a white horse and he and the Black Petes go down chimneys to leave presents (you leave a carrot and sugarcubes for the horse) in kids' shoes. Like Santa, Sinterklaas has a book which lists the good and bad kids. Bad kids get spanked with reeds by the Black Petes and get stuffed in a bag and taken back to Spain. There's a whole real life back story to it as Sinterklaas himself is based on the Saint Nicholas (Bishop of Myra) who freed a bunch of girls who were being forced into prostitution. Also fun fact. (Fictional) Sinterklaas used to have a different helper before the Black Pete thing, namely the Krampus which as some may know was a demon who basically was the anti-Sinterklaas and used to take bad kids to Hell.

We have basically the same holiday in Czechia. People dress up as St. Nicholas (=Mikuláš), Angel and Chort(=čert) and go around visiting children. Čert can scare bad kids, saying he'll shove them in a bag and take them to hell, but Mikuláš stops him and Angel gives them some candy afterwards. Meanwhile adults around are having a great time and some kids get so scared they pee themselves, great fun for the whole family! Chort / Čert is kind of a demonlike spirit, servant of the devil. I think it's a combination of devil and some old pagan slavic trickster god / spirit? He is also usually played by a guy with a black paint on his face (charcoal dust traditionally, not meant to be a race thing obviously), black clothes / furs, horns and a tail. Sounds very much like your Krampus. Anyway this has to have the same origins obviously, I just wonder why you eventually chose to switch the cool mischievous hell spirit for a black guy that takes people to Spain instead of Hell though ... those hundred years fighting the spanish in 16th / 17th century must have really scarred your people 😂

It's always so fucking funny seeing these reactions. I grew up with the holiday so hey, it feels normal, and the modern version (even before changes) isn't nearly as racist as it sounds, but with even a little bit of scrutiny... yeah it's almost stupendously racist. Details for those interested: When I was a child (20+ years ago) said blackface was always explained as 'oh they go down the chimney to give you presents but because they do it so often they don't wash their face because why bother ha ha'. And as a child you're like 'absolutely makes sense got it'. The character (actually multiple but let's not get into that) was already changing to be much more rounded: an all round nice guy who loves kids and gives out free candy, crazy good at acrobatics and generally considered (by kids) to be a positive role model. Just in blackface. A couple of years ago they changed the character where you could freely choose which colour to make his face, which was... Not received very well. Not necessarily because 'muh tradition', but also because it didn't feel coherent nor did it feel really appropriate? I mean it's for kids and they don't really care, but you could tell something was kinda off about it. Then I think last year or two years ago? The makeup was changed to just be streaks of soot. Dunno about Dutch society in general because I'm an asocial shut-in but I thought it was generally well-received, only some old purists grumble about it. So yeah that's Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet. If you go further into the holiday's history it's even more racist, but that stuff is very clearly a product of its time. The story was later stolen by American capitalists to make Santa Claus.

the holiday itself was great if you ignored the blackface, now they don't give out candy anymore

It's not a depiction of a black person though, it's a mythical figure, it's not racist

What is wrong about black Peter?

The consider it black face in the US, which is a big no no. Also in 2013 some people from the Netherlands made an official complaint at the UN human rights department/whatever and they said: the Netherlands should really have a national debate on how to change their holiday or clear up why it's not wrong.

Some white people in Murica somehow have to say which culture is good and which is bad, and which holidays you allowed to celebrate. It's fine. Probably.

@@martijnkoning3354 I wonder if those were widespread and what the general consensus was in each time period. The modern euh... story is they are freed slaves.
@martijnkoning33549 ай бұрын
@autohmae don't get it skewed. The story is based on Saint Nicolas, the original story is about freed slaves. What they did to it early in the 80s or whenever it started was pure racism. To black Pete fans hide behind the original story of it being freed slaves, then when u mention its blackface, proceed to say that its the dust from chimneys. Cant pick both. But I bet you still haven't looked up what the original prints about black Pete looked like, so do that first before you start blabbering

They're just people handing out free gifts and candy. Whatever reason you may have to think "how dare they do blackface" originated from the US, the literal other side of the planet. This tradition has not been an expression of hate for decades if not centuries. It's been one of kind-hearted charity, featuring an immortal saint who decided to remember the name of every Dutch person, his helpers who hand out candy, and a magic horse that walks on rooftops.

@@ayshanotaisha5054 What's the yikes? Just because some Americans in the US were dicks in the 1800s doesn't mean we should all refrain from performing harmless traditions globally. I know Americans like to think that they're the beacons of civilization that all other countries should strive to be, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
@ayshanotaisha50549 ай бұрын
@ChrisMorray @ChrisMorray doesn't it still have racist origins? Yes.... America's weren't the only ones who were dicks. America still has offensive traditions that I don't agree with. At this point, it's not about "America wanting to be the center of the universe." A lot of Europeans are unwilling to change this tradition because that would mean acknowledging that what others are saying is true... They “need” black pete because they need to put black people down. They react to increased diversity by slinging disparaging stereotypes and humiliating other races. This would mean that the Dutch, consciously or unconsciously, are fundamentally racist.
