During the summer it is hard to keep putting water on the soil without considering the impact we have on our water departments
Harvesting the rainwater and containing it is a great way to ensure you can irrigate your crops without worrying about the impact on the water we have saved for drinking.
Today I will show you how I harvest the rainwater and contain it within my system. 8,000 litres available at any one time

Interesting video and NOT ONLY for Gardeners. I have no mains water and rely on my own borehole and electric pump for all of my water so rain catchment is also an important factor as we don't get anywhere near as much rain here in my part of Bulgaria as you do in Wales! LOL. Currently, on a power outage, I have no borehole water (until I fit a solar/wind turbine setup) so would rely on collected/harvested water to flush my toilet, wash dishes etc. I bought 6 x 300 litre water containers from a DIY shed some years back, but only have two left working on the south side as those on the North Side in the prevailing wind, froze and split so now, I am in the process of converting over to oil drums (the ones I bought had contained apple juice), but I haven't as yet got around to fitting the taps etc. My borehole water has a very high Limescale content so I have a special rock salt filter on it. Never ever occurred to me about algae and seedlings - in this case, I would have one water container especially for them and add a few drops of bleach/chlorine, that might work? How many metres high can that Bilge Pump lift and do you run it of a battery or generator?
@simplifygardening
@simplifygardening 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Wow living from a borehole in a whole different game. The pump I run from an old car battery and use a small 10w solar panel to charge it when not in use.The pump has a head of 8 meters, Bleach would work in the tank but not recommended, You can get a small chlorine tablet instead

I think its crazy that rain lands on the roof and heads down drain and out to sea. Yet we pump perfectly good drinking water to our houses and we use it to flush our toilets. Seems a little backward to me.

Any chance you could show us a close up of the connection and join of where the pipe joining pipes fit to the IBC's. I found out that there is a fine and course threads on the outlets (guess who got the wrong one! 😂). Could you fit an inline gate valve to slow down the bilge pump? Good episode 😀👍🏻

The ibs have both the wide and narrow, but I use a piece of rubber pipe from the taps so it makes no dif which it is the rubber pipe is jublie clipped on tight sealing the joint, then that goes to plastic pipe. i will take some pics and send them to you on Monday as im in work until then

Yeah thats another great use, just make sure the frame is strong and cant sink as each weighs a tonne when full
@CookiesAllotmentDevon

Lol, that’s a good point, I think I worked it out for 500 kg and was going to have a drain off half way up the tank to drain to another tank to ensure it stayed at the 500?

Good video... id just be careful with IBC’s as some really nasty crap gets shipped and stored in the. my main problem is the only roof i have is a house... ive got several 260l barrels at my house and will maybe buy even more soon to cope with next years summer weather. It will be enough as i only have a small plot.

Hi, does any algae/greenness of the rainwater have any detrimental effect on watering plants. Also the IBC has some black film/growth inside the IBC tank, again is there any concern of using this water to irrigate, ie contamination.

Hi Jony, I’m Chairman of Fishguard Allotments and we’ve just bought 10 ibc tanks as an insurance when we have drought conditions. We have a stream for water but it dried up in June, hence the tanks. We’ve no roofs to collect water so I wonder if you have any suggestion how we can collect the rain water? I’ve made a few samples for collection but would appreciate your views and perhaps a collector, home made of course. We can fill these tanks in the later winter and early spring but would need a pump. By the way, tanks are spread over the site which is quite big. Any help would be welcome. Like the videos, still learn a lot at 78. Basil

fit a t piece to the pump outlet put a 1 meter piece of hose on one end put this back in the ibc now put a hose on the other end of t piece you will not get pressure build up when using hose it will be diverted back to the ibc so you can turn your watering hose off anywhere in your allotment because the pump will just put the water back in the ibc it is pumping it from
