I feel great importance should be given to save top soil while we harvest rain water. At any cost top soil should never get into underground, or it should never get flushed away to river. Retaining grasses on soil surface holds the soil, and it reduces the soil erosion - so stop using herbicides. Don't see weeds as weeds, most of them are herbs. From my point of view, modification required to most of the Rain water harvesting methods commonly followed/implemented. Water should flow through grass, plants and it should get filtered naturally, before it gets into ground water. Just sand and stone filter alone not sufficient. If more and more mud(top soil) enters into ground water it blocks the underground water path ways, and most importantly we loose our precious top soil. It is not a problem for now in few years time. But if everyone continue to do such method it will have negative consequences later after many years. Top soil is more precious than water. So consider to do few modifications and make sure no soil particles, mud enters into borewell or into any RWH pits. You may consider some of the steps listed below. 1. Create small ponds or pits where ever you prefer in your farm. 2. create the ponds near existing big trees in your farm or plant trees near ponds you created. Note : this should be on upper side of the slope. 3. make a drain(வாய்க்கால்) from pond to borewell pit. 4. Plant something which can filter water - example : Vettiver, aloe vera !! if you know any other plant which can filter water, please post. ? 5. fill the pit next to the borewell with sand, or as mentioned in the video. 6. Don't let muddy water enter into ground water, it may create problem later. 7. More important, mulch the whole farm where ever possible. earth warm activity will make the land porous, so that lot of rain water gets collected in entire area of your farm. Plant more legumes family plants for live mulching to increase soil fertility, specifically soil nitrogen level. 8. Request neighbouring farmers to implement, at least 7th point(mulching - dry and live mulching). 9. avoid any cement structures, stones, and sand to filter the water. Why this method : If lot of water accumulated near borewell, mud can go inside, so you may want to consider the points listed above. Another important point, never close any borewell, even if you don't get water, - recharge it, or just leave it - If it gets recharged naturally - you can try to get water from it later some point in time. Cover it nicely and leave it, else rats, and small kids can fall into borewell.

I don’t get the concept of first rainwater separation pipe @ 3:00. I would assume the valve was open here by default since animation shows water came out of the pipe at 3:05 when it rained but then at 3:26 you say to always open the valve after rain. Should the valve be open or closed by default? If closed by default the bad water gets mixed with good water anyways in the pipe when it rains. What’s the point then? It should be designed in such a way that it should always be open. When it rains it must be manually closed from inside of the home (unless you want to get wet by going and closing the valve from outside) after the first few minutes. In case it rains in the middle of the night there is no other way except if you have an auto sensor to close after the first few minutes. I also am finding it difficult to understand the filter/overflow concept without the animation or a sketch with the pipes being shown at 4:31. Can anyone out there explain for me since I think nowadays you have the filter attached directly to the pipes instead of mesh/jelly stones/charcoal thing which I think is called the pit?

not recommended un urban setting, the rain water is contaminated and this water when fed to bore well will contaminate the ground water too.
