The best thing to set tanks on is sand... In this case he did a good job with what he set the tanks on Except before setting the tanks I personally would have put a layer of sand under the tanks...

Everything is as important as you make it. If you ignore the little things then they become big or bigger problems. I don't like problems so I face each and every day like it is important. It all looks nice. I did my system with a liner tank of cement and underground. Used a lift pump that generated its own power and saved lots of power

Oh, my goodness, THANK YOU FOR SAYING MORINGA. :D My heart sank when you said avocados!!! LOL!!! And then I thought, well, I do want them to have avocados if they can. And then!.... what a GREAT idea popped into your head! In all seriousness, with Moringa, you don't have to choose. It will not compete with your avocados, so plant them together and get the height and dappled shade / filtered sunlight of the Moringa up top and all the FULL hot sun for the avocados at the bottom.

Here in Los Angeles you rock is called Crushed Aggregate Base. (crushed (broken) rock as opposed to rocks that haven't been broken (larger rocks)) The rocks come in different sizes.. The most common is 3/4 inch.. When they say 3/4 inch That means it will go thru a 3/4 inch mesh.. So a piece can be longer as long as one dimension is 3/4 inch or less.. They also make CMB Crushed Miscellaneous Base.. (Crushed concrete and asphalt with some fines (can be a small amout of dirt). Bricks are not allowed any more in CMB

Pea gravel or unbroken rock unless in a confined area can always move.. Broken material will lock in
@boltonky
@boltonky 5 ай бұрын
Informative, but interesting about pea gravel as most tank places actually recommend that if not placing on dirt or a concrete pad these days. Which its like getting concrete pads done people have so may different ideas sometimes its hard to know what is right or wrong (that info is coming from professionals)
@BetterTogetherLife
@BetterTogetherLife 5 ай бұрын
Yea I’ve seen it both ways for sure. Not sure if I would recommend the rock we got. It’s working, but I’m sure there is better. Pea gravel is just so loose it’s hard to keep level. So you’d have to bring the tanks in with like a crane or excavator.

I see homesteaders mount these things on crushed stone and even half bury them in colder climates, but I don't see many mounted on towers like I am used to seeing in the midwest. Do you get enough pressure without raising them for most things? Maybe add a pressure pump for showers and end-of season use?
@volvosan

Don't know about your area, but where I am the minimum charge for someone to deliver 2-10 yards is $350. So I ended up hauling what I could in my Toyota @ $13 per load. You want processed stone (will have lots of fine powdery crushed rock in it) if you have a compacter, otherwise pea gravel if you're just gonna rake it.

QUESTION: Do you have to rinse them out before installing them? We just purchased a 2500 gallon tank like yours and was wondering that?

I didn't, and I would not think that you need to. Now I will rinse and scrub them out every year or so.

When I get my system I think I'll just dig 6 inches down instead of building up a pad....then I can cover the pipes with dirt for UV protection and the east Texas clay should support and disperse the weight. That's the goal anyhow lol.

Help me out here cuz I'm confused. If the system is gravity fed, how does the rain catchment, farthest away from the tanks, go down to ground level, under the house, and then fill the tank. TIA
@BetterTogetherLife
@BetterTogetherLife 4 жыл бұрын
I will be explaining all of that NEXT WEEK!!!! But the main way to explain it is this...... a lake will always find level. So no matter where there is water connected, it will always level out and find the exact same water line across all of the pipes. It’s confusing I know, so I’ll try to explain that next week. 😁😁

Can you add a pressure system to take the water to other spots on the farm without it loosing your water pressure at the other end?

Is there a problem with water freezing in these tanks?
@BetterTogetherLife
@BetterTogetherLife 3 жыл бұрын
We did have our first ever long term freeze (about 1 week ) and we didn’t have a problem with the tanks, but one of the pipes did crack. So we need to resolve that and pump it to the spring garden.

Why is it important to put the tanks on sand or gravel instead of virgin dirt or clay? If the goal is to prevent erosion, rock could be put around the tanks once installed. If you’re worried about the ground shifting, that shouldn’t be an issue if placed flat on clay.

Sand allows for drainage but not so aggressive to plastic.

Is it absolutely necessary to have a foundation? Why wouldn’t level ground be sufficient? It seems that the rock introduces puncture risks
@BetterTogetherLife
@BetterTogetherLife 3 жыл бұрын
The rocks help water drain and prevent shifting. The material for these tanks isn’t at risk of puncture with this type of foundation. And if you need an inspection for the type of reimbursement like we have, it’s really important to follow their specs.

Couldn't those be put on the side of your house? You put them right smack dab in the middle of your view? It is nice to kick back after a long hard day and grab something cold to drink and sit out on the back deck and enjoy all that nature...you put those big tanks so that you can't enjoy that wonderful view...isn't that why you are out in the country in the first place?
@BetterTogetherLife
@BetterTogetherLife 4 жыл бұрын
Paul, I think you are assuming that you have been to our home and fully understand the layout and all of the specifics. No, this does not block our view at all. It is in the least viewed spot on our land. Anywhere else would be a more visible spot. In fact, anywhere else by our house would take up space that we have something else planned. Including views. So no, they are in the correct spot for everything we want and need!! 👍🏻👍🏻
