Funny story. A tree nursery had a customer that had no luck with planting a tree in front lawn, of a new sub-division on edge of town. Three unsuccessful attempts. Finally the neighbor across the street came over & said, “You’re never going to get a tree to grow there”. Oh, why is that? “Because when this was a cow pasture, that’s where the salt block was!”

😂 reminds me of an old guy who used to come to my restaurant I worked at and would tell the story of how many cows used to poop there lol 🤣😂😂😂 because that land was old cow pasture 20 years ago.

The arbs are likely struggling because Aaron keeps planting them in a hard pan tube. The holes need to be at least 2-3 times wider than the root ball, so the roots have somewhere to go. The auger “polishes” the sides of the hole, which only makes it harder for the roots to penetrate.
@dustyflats3832

I was thinking the same. The sides need to be ruffed up and they should be watered in right away.

you make a great point. the piedmont area of NC is mostly clay. When you dig a hole for a plant there lots of pine fines, etc. are needed in order to avoid digging a clay "pot" that holds water and drowns the roots. Also, planting the crown a bit higher helps.

Pretty plants. Laura, a bit of advice from an older woman. You've had two children and I know you wouldn't want anything to keep you from gardening. You REALLY need to stop lifting things that are heavy. Not only can a hernia take you out of a gardening season, but look up prolapse. It's a condition that no one talks about and affects so many women. You have help to move and load heavier things. Take it from someone who knows.

Good luck on the new Arbs! In my area we sometimes get a caliche layer so thick the tree roots can’t bust through it. I read an extension article about the difference in performance if you pickaxe a hole through that layer. They also said extension may have maps indicating the depth of the caliche layer, because we are also heavily agricultural (so they know where it is). I know this Arb will make it! (But just in case)

I've always had best results with arborvitae plantings following three easy steps in my zone 3 to 4 gardening. Dig wide to allow plenty of extra space for the root ball....give it room to establish itself. Fill the hole with water and let it drain before placing the tree. Toss in organic matter with with the garden soil when refilling the whole. For first 2 to 3 months water regularly. Cedars are thirsty plants and do best with the extra attention to moisture levels while establishing theirroot system. Hope this helps....you have guided me so many times with your videos.....feels good to return the favor.

I think this is a good example of why mixed borders are better for the average gardener. You have greater resources than a lot of people so it might not be an issue for you. But I see people around here in GA plant walls of arbs and most of the time in a few years you’ll see some of them dead or dying. So you have to replace them and either wait for them to catch up or spend even more money for larger trees. I do agree with others about a larger hole and rough sides since there’s so much hard pan.
@barbthreinen2628
@barbthreinen2628 Жыл бұрын
When you augar your hole make it way bigger and incorporate the soil around it. When it rains or is watered the water sits in the soil that's hardpan and don't drain away. Lossening the soil way out keeps the soil from pooling thus rooting the roots. Not sure but it has worked for me with our soil.

Thank you for sharing the names of all the trees! I live in Maine and have a short growing season (lots of snow still) so shrubs/trees with yellow on them make me happy! The beautiful color pokes out of the snow and is just lovely. I am going to look for the frosted juniper you showed along with a couple more! Thank you guys, have a great day.
