We are sisters, Julia and Anastasia Vanderbyl. A few years ago, we began a journey to live a life in perfect harmony with nature. A life of caring for animals, growing fruit, planting trees, gardening, cooking, creating, building and learning to live with the land.
In this time, nature has taught us more than we could have ever imagined.
Our environmental films document the landscape, the lessons we’ve learnt and our work as regenerative farmers here on Bundjalung Country.
We live on the land of the Arakwal and Minjungbal People of the Bundjalung Nation. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the Country we live on and recognise their continuing connection to the land and waters. We thank them for protecting this rainforest and its ecosystems since time immemorial.

Ah, I just moved my completed compost also. I took the guinea grass and copper top weed and kitchen scraps to make it. Now it forms a herb garden beneath the frangipani and a ghost gum that I rescued from a neighbour's overzealous lawn mowing. The curl grubs made a feast for currawongs and curlews , who keep now returning to the shadow of the compost circle, in the hope of more. I am still waiting on mulberries as the tree recovers from termites and I am watching my mangos grow slowly. 🌸

Hello Anastasia. I love the videos you, Mom, and Julia make. I look forward to them every Sunday. I might be able to help you with your tiny sewing machine problems. Since I am very mechanically inclined with a shop of my own, here are a couple possible solutions. Living in the middle Atlantic portion of the United States, we can get some brutal heat and humidity in the late spring through September, and yes, humidity it a problem here, too. Your Needles: 1. Try doing a Google search for the needle(s) you need. It may required a lot of searching, but that is one place to start. Also in your Google search, try to see it the manufacturer of the machine is still in business. Though it is an old machine, you never know if the company is still in operation or whether they can refer you to some place that has parts. 2. A more drastic method: Since you tried to get one of your needles into your machine, if the length is the only problem,, take a pair of wire cutters, cut/snap off a little bit of the top of the needle at a time to make it fit. Only do this if there is a screw to hold the needle in place. The Tension Problem-Lost screw: 1. Anastasia, I believe what you are looking for is a NUT, not a screw or a bolt to push the spring up or down. 2. You will have to see if in your collection of stuff, your can find the nut, and if it looks like it is going to fit, you absolutely must look a threads on the tension post (lack of a better term I can come up with) and the inside of the nut to see if the threads are either fine or course threads. 3. Course nuts/bolts are called Stove nuts and bolts. However, if the threads are fine, it is a Machine screw or Machine nut. Rust Issues: 1. WD40 will not solve the rust issue alone. For the outside of the case, you can use WD40 with extra fine sand paper. If you can get it, purchase Emery cloth as it will not fall apart (180, 220, 280, on up for the grit). (It is a cloth with imbedded grit material.) 2. For your internal parts that are rusting, I would suggest the same as in number one above, or use fine or extra fine steel wool (NO Soap Pads) with WD40.. Try to get as many of the internal parts out of the sewing machine, and at the least, place some machine oil on them. Do not use motor oil, as it is too thick. 3. Wipe off all of the grit and dirt from the parts and then place some oil on the parts, put back together and see it that solves the problem. 4. Since you live in the rain forest, you are going to have to protect the machine from wetness. Try to find a large plastic storage container that has a locking or sealing top. You will have less aggravation later, and you will not have to do much maintenance in the future. And of course, do not use the mini-sewing machine on rainy or humid days. You would be asking for trouble. 5. Finally, once you have removed the rust on the outside casing, wipe everything clean and free of any oily residue, and paint it. If available, get Rustoleum primer or similar, and Rustoleum Exterior high gloss enamel paint. You may have to use 2 coats of each to keep the rust down. Remember to very light sand between coats to get the finish smooth. Anastasia, if you try any of these things and they are successful, please leave a reply. I would really like to hear it on video or to read it in a posting., especially if you have any success. Best wishes!

Your accomplishments and content bring feelings of peace, serenity and the joys of simplicity . It s wonderful to see . I love the old fashioned ways. Ty. Ps Rust Oleum works well but be careful with chemicals ! You can also use white vinegar or ketchup by first spraying soapy water on them to clean the grease of then submerging the rusted metal parts in either for 4-6 hours (look for the bubbles coming off the parts to see it working ) then remove the parts and wipe them re- submerge them in baking soda and water to neutralize the acids then remove and wipe clean and spray lightly with grease and wipe regularly to prevent re-rusting . White lithium grease is great to keep parts moving well too besides WD-40 🙂

If you use vinegar, be sure to wash it off completely with water and them neutralize with baking soda, or it may rust out the whole thing. Then apply oil. If well oiled, humidity won't be a problem. Have a friend in muggy Florida who lived in a house with no air conditioning for 40 years and they had manual treadle sewing machines in use through the year. You might be able to adapt regular manual sewing needles designed for leather with a thread hole at the tip. Fantastic videos, always a joy to watch! Keep up the kindness and wonder!

I polish off rust, by hand, with 4xxxx steel wool. You could wrap it around a small screw driver to reach tiny spaces and corners in the metal. I finish by using an air compressor blow gun to clear the tiny particles from polishing. In this country we call the outside threaded portion of a fastener a 'bolt' and the inside threaded fastener a 'nut'. Using a 'washer' properly sized under the small nut to cover the diameter of the spring will compress it more efficiently than the nut by itself as you turn the nut and contact the spring. I admire your determination and vision for the tiny machine.

Hello Anastasia and Julia. Thanks for another episode of your life in you own 'Garden of Eden'. I love the fact you keep finding suitable materials for making your own clothes. The new top you have just made is exquisite and looks very attractive on you, Anastasia. As for your new little Sewing Machine... very fine 'Wet & Dry' paper with some WD-40 should do the job. Just don't rub too hard on the white metal parts - especially if they are nickel or chrome plated - and work in small circles. Much Love. Russ. UK. xx
