I disagree with using Peat moss as a base. I tried it and the fine powder travels over everything and into the water and powders their food. I am sure into their lungs. I love everything else you mentioned. Thanks

excellent methods & techniques employed to raise the Turkeys in brooder & pasture # but i would use Solar powered electric heaters instead of propane gas burners , & rice husk for brooder floor which is easily removed & replaced by fresh rice husk & comfortable for chicks & does not cause contamination even if chicks spread it to drinking water or food # ❤️❤️👍

Do you raise your batches back to back or do you have a rest period? How much total pasture space is devoted to each batch? How many seasons do you wait before moving turkeys on the same ground again?

Yes, similar. Spacing is less. And depending on your outside temperatures, most chicks will feather out by 3 to 6 weeks & can graduate to pasture.

Thanks for watching! Rooms 1 and 2 have concrete floors with deep bedding. The outdoor portion is slightly lower than the two indoor rooms, so we provide a ramp for the poults to move between inside and outside areas. The ceiling is about ten feet high. Congratulations on your new career path! Please let us know how things go!

The best place to start a farm is one where you're able to purchase (or lease) enough land for your operation. Please what should i do to increase survival of my chicks the last time 10 chicks dies this is the reason i am not able to increase my turkeys. Thanks for any info you can provide.

Learn to autopsy. How did you find them dead? Varies...could be weak stock to contaminated feed (fungus), rats, bacterial, viral, draft...What breed? temperature in brooder at 4 weeks? What was their behavior up until then? Suggested reading, Storey's guide to raising turkeys.

As peat moss in a non renewable resource, have you trialed or considered any other options other than wood chip?

That's a great question! We currently use wood chips as bedding. Please let us know if you have other suggestions!
@gulsumdave5711

@@HeiferUSA The reason I asked is that Christine said that you were trying peat moss rather than pine shavings, as the turkeys can try to eat the shavings, and I was interested to know if you had tried any other materials. One possible option could be coir, but I have to admit that I don’t know what the cost implications would be, or if the turkeys would try to consume it. Here in the UK coir seems to be one of the go to mediums to replace peat moss in horticultural seed and potting composts. The sale of peat for use in the amateur gardening sector will be banned by 2024 to protect peatlands and the natural environment.

Depends on variety and end goal wt. What target weight are you aiming for? Processing loses about 5-7% body weight. Heritage breeds grow slower and range from 9-14lb female to 22-30lb+ for male/Tom's (at 6-7 months, larger Tom's after several years).
