As someone who studies psychology and has worked with dogs and horses my entire life, I have never heard someone so eloquently explain the psychological development of dogs as well as Joel. He is really pioneering in the world of dog training and canine behavior. This is really really good stuff and carries over so well to developmental psychology in humans as well. I have never heard of a "fear period" before, yet it instantly explained a mental change I noticed when I turned about 12 years old. Then human brain development supposedly is finished by 25 years of age. I certainly noticed that my mentality relaxed around this age, for example I am far less worried about what my friends think of me.

This is exactly what me and my husband needed to hear! We have an 8 month old pup and we have been struggling with walking on a lead and recall and so many other things that we shouldn't be worrying so much about!! we thought that we were doing something wrong because the pup ignores us when we try to tell her to stop barking at the birds in the window or she is still stealing our slippers 🤭. Thank you so much. I will share with all dog owners I know! Specially puppy owners!

Check out Joel's Rottweiler named Creed video for the foundation video for loose leash walking and reactivity. He also has a puppy and a little dog video since you don't have a 100lb Rottweiler. The satiation video as well as the dog walking tutorial are particularly useful as well. Hope that helps.

Thank you for this! I feel like less of a failure! I fostered a litter of 8 week old puppies and all dreams of being perfect went to hell! I ended up keeping the girl. She was so distraught when her brothers were adopted one by one that I let her sleep with us. She is just about 3 months and she sleeps with us and I have felt so guilty about it. But we sleep through the night - everything I have read or watched has said she should sleep in her crate and I am total failure. But she makes it through the night without an accident and all three of us get a good night’s sleep. 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️

Awesome video man. Found a starving 4 month old pup a few weeks ago. I think he’s ahead of the curve cuz he sits, waits for his food and does a lot of amazing things already. But good to know I shouldn’t be too freaked out about training atm. House training, sit wait for food and walking is all I’m worried about right now. He’s good at all those things already!!

Thank you! I just rescued a 10-month-old, 60-pound pit bull puppy and it’s clear his former owners did absolutely no socializing or training. He’s in board and train right now with an amazing trainer, but I’ve been worried about managing him when he gets home. He will be much better after 2 weeks of intense training, but still a 60-pound puppy. This video put my mind at ease that I can pick up where the trainer left off, especially when it comes to introducing him to my resident dog, a 5-year-old pit bull female who I rescued 2 years ago, and have a peaceful home.

I got my puppy last July at 10 weeks and he is now 5 months tomorrow. Out of all the video research and training videos I have been watching since before even getting him, this gave me the most relief. I always felt like I am not doing enough and every video seem like its easy and it will only take a a day (or 30min) to get the perfect dog. Momo is potty trained, will sometime know sit, down, come, leave it, touch, wait, paw, drop it, let's go, this way, go in [crate], uh-ah stop, and look at me but it isn't 100% reliable especially outside. Knowing that his brain is still developing and his brain is simply somewhere else, made me feel better. I will still do short training sessions but at least now I know where to set my expectation and give him more time to just be a puppy, at least until that 7 months start. Still need better recall, loose lease walking, no nipping, and no jumping to greets other but otherwise he is a really good boy. Thank you so much! I need sleep.

We all just worry and want our puppies to be well behaved, I think alot of trainers take advantage of this. So glad i found this channel!!!

Also important to note that breed also has an impact on the duration and occurrence of each stage of maturity! For example, a golden doodle, cockerspaniel, chihuahua may go through their major fear period between 8 to 12 months. Whereas a Rottweiler, Cane Corso, St. Bernard may not hit that same period of maturity until 18 to 26 months. Adulthood may not come until 3 to 3.5 years old for the big breeds! My helper dog Rottie hit his major fear period at 17 months and lasted until 22 months! 🤭 Every dog is a little different 🥰
@gauravkapil132 жыл бұрын
Thanks for saying this. My Rott was fearful at 12 months. Now he is teenage rebel at 16 months. We are setting hard boundaries for him. A disciplined dog is a free dog.
@KiraSieni Жыл бұрын
I wonder if that holds true for earlier phases too as mine actually seems to be learning some of the basics early at 4 months. I've had him 3.5 weeks and he's already learning leash manners, knows sit and stay and look at me, knows no bite, leave it, go get it and is learning drop it. He's a mini Aussiedoodle. He's not 100%. He sometimes forgets because he's a puppy and they are very much like raising a child with adhd, with energy level, impulsiveness, and attention span, but over all he's doing really really well.

I do think this this information is helpful but as an experienced German Shepherd owner, I don’t suggest not training them at an earlier age. My in laws got a shepherd and we’re not able to get her to training classes due to Covid…big mistake …she was afraid of everything and became very reactive to people. They finally got her to training and had to go nearly everyday to get her to be more confident. She’s better now but still can only be around people for so long before she starts getting stressed and needs to be in a another room to de-stress. This dog came from a line of dogs that had fear issues. If you have a dog like that, yes by all means make them feel safe but don’t shelter them too much….shepherds need early socialization and exposure. Rule of thumb, introduce them to 1,000 new people, dogs and environments the first year of life…but yes absolutely make those introductions be age appropriate!

Appreciate the refinement of the "sleep in the bed" criteria. After our rescue dog got over his reactivity (completely because of your guidance) he is starting to be allowed in the bed. I think it makes him feel safe and improved our relationship. Who knows how he was treated in the 1.5 years before we got him. Thanks for all you do!

I know a breeder + she lets puppys experience the world - of course in safety. in an early age they are so eager to explore everything - her dogs learn driving cars, going by train, getting to know cats and people, market place... + everything from the age of 6 to eight weeks. she also is teaching them go find different things by smell, recall, sit + stay in a playful way and with food. they love it + act like model students - for seconds of course;-) from her with three month you get a basically potty trained dog who knows everythging - of course they are crazy and children but they have such an excellent basis! she breeds lagotto romagnolo + most of them become working or assistance dogs. with her own dogs she is sometimes on flm scenes - they know so many tricks and vocabulary (for example bring 30-50 different things) - but again: she really starts to playtrain them almost from the date they are born + says it is very important that they get to know as many things - and smells - as possible in the first half year - so they are less fearful + first of all: much easyer to train if they know the alphabet - and become better search/tracking dogs afterwards.

Yep and to train a perfect child they should have a mother and father in the home, the mother should not work, the child should be read many books a day, they should start playing piano because it’s good for the brain, they should learn another language or go to a dual language school. Then as they get older the parents should be constantly be helping them with their homework. There screen time should be limited to 1-2 hours a day if at all. They should be outside learning to farm and take care of animals, I could go on and on. I think you know where I’m going with this. I make videos for busy people of all different life situations, which is every human being in America right now, busy people need to be given the broad strokes for a good dog, not an hour long video for a perfect dog.
@SSUMSER2 жыл бұрын
@@dejavu333 yes - she is from austria + she is a small breeder. she never has more than two female dogs with puppies + she and her partner care for them 24 hours a day in the beginning. one of them even sleeps in the room with doggies... .
@SSUMSER2 жыл бұрын
@@BDTraining of course - nobody is perfect;-) but I think many people wait too long socializing and teaching puppies because they think they have to wait until they are 7 month or older. but if you wait too long you miss so many chances. it is much more difficult when they are in puberty + they do not really get in a fear period if they have experienced the outdoor world from the beginning - starting with the embossing phase (4-8 weeks) as I said - she breeds working dogs and gives them only to people who want to do something with them. some are for example assitance dogs for diabetics. (excuse my english!)

I won't have a puppy for at least 5 more years (most likely), but because I made the decision to get a puppy after this dog passes away, and it's been almost 20 years since I last had a puppy, here I am. Prepping so I remember what living with a puppy is actually like. Because, you know, 5-7 years is just barely enough time to mentally prepare.

I’d really appreciate another video with more detail on how to practice management of our dogs while going through these phases. It’s easy to say get them out for hikes or to the beach etc but when they are getting bigger and don’t have a lot of training on them it gets increasingly difficult to take them certain places because the more they rehearse negative behaviours (pulling, barking or getting distracted by other dogs etc) the harder it can be to inhibit those later on. How do we best set ourselves up for healthy exposure outings with our young dogs(especially the 5mth-12mth phase) without developing bad habits and how do we deal with the inevitable scenarios that occur with other dogs or people without it causing negative impressions on our pups....like how do we manage our pups when they lose their mind because they just want to go play with the dog that just walked in the pet store or they meet on the trail? Is daycare a good or bad idea during this time or does it depend on the dog? What are some good relationship building exercises to do with our puppies before “real training begins” and what are things that could be damaging to that relationship if done too soon? Thanks for the video - it is very helpful to remember to not place too many expectations on our puppies but I think there is a lot more specifics in these areas that would be awesome to mine deeper!
