I bought Icelandic sheep last year, I milk them just enough for coffee and cereal and follow the intensive rotational grazing. Icies up until the introduction of tractors were the sole provider of milk in Iceland.

We milked one of our katahdin ewes this year just to keep her comfortable while she dried up because we had sold her ram lamb. Her udder and teats were about the size of goats I’ve milked in the past, so not difficult to milk, and she gave me the creamiest, tastiest milk! The way I describe it is that goat milk has kind of a funky taste compared to cow milk, and cow milk has that same taste compared to sheep milk! IMO, sheep milk is definitely the best of the three! We will be milking all of our lactating ewes next season. 😋

Research "annatto and linseed dairy cows" as a .gov website has cited studies showing the possibility of a rather quick change for the better in the actual fatty acid profile itself, while lessening the overall fat content of a different mammal. All are likely relatable

For those looking into other milk "specific" breeds, Lacaune sheep is solid, can handle basically any climate, they have wool but tend to shed from the neck, a French breed that is used in France to make a specific type of cheese. The Assaf sheep, is mainly a cross between East Friesian and Awassi I recently "found" this one the internet says that it took the Friesians milking ability and the Asaff's hardiness, could be a good option to look into though ive never worked with them. If you're way up north in the freezing cold it's said British Milk Sheep are the better option, though I can't vouch since ive never worked with them. When I had livestock I was one of those Katahdin milkers, it works, but it's hit or miss some will produce well some don't. Try and find breeders that have tried breeding for higher milk production, though you are better off doing it yourself, because seems no big breeders want to work on that project. Have to get my hands on Rachel's book. Sheep milk is the future, there is a reason why China has heavily invested in sheep milk products the last couple of years.

I have an Assaf/Finn ewe and her offspring ewe that was sired by a 100% Finn. 3 katahdin ewes and a young ram that is 85% East Friesian/15% Lacaune.

If anyone ever tells you it's too fatty, tell them to search "annatto and linseed dairy cows" online, and then relate it to other mammals. I'm sure the horses that are tied up in Mongolia right now, awaiting milking, are nowhere near as healthy as those from that civilization's past, when those animals were part of traveling groups which were able to eat along the way. Considering they likely only chose fertile places to camp, as those animals health is what they had depended on to get them any further.

I live in FL and have had to deal with the barber pole worm. The best wormer I have found is lespedeza. It's a plant, and you can get it in pellet form, and I've never noticed the worms developing a resistance to it. It's similar in nutrition to alfalfa.

I don't grow sheep, but I have grown businesses whether through SEO, lists, automation etc... I just wanted to tip my hat and recognize your excellent skills, beautiful strategy, great design and impressive application of all things marketing to an industry which I'm sure was starving for you to come along. I'm quite impressed by you from landing an early interview from one of the goats in Mr Salatin to your vertical strategy, squeeze plays to your mission statement and most importantly... to your wisdom and understanding of the financial system. You don't often see rock star business skills riding shotgun to a biblical calling of generational responsibility of back to the land. Not only that, you've done this and mastered that while also learning how to farm sheep and make money from it. This industry is lucky to have you and I admire your courage, dedication and faith. At your age, the sleep sacrifices you've made no doubt were driven by faith and fate. You remind me of myself, but you followed your calling back to the land. Your parents should be impressed, you are an impressive woman.

@whoopsydaisyfarm2820 8 ай бұрын
In my book I have a pull out box explaining how percentages are determined in a breeding up program. When there are mixed breeds like you are describing then we get into more complex math but it sounds like you have it calculated very well with your flock!

Each parent passes half their genes to their offspring. So your 50-50 ewe would give 25-25 to her lambs, 85-15 would be 42.5-7.5 , 75-25 would be 37.5-12.5 ewe 75 would give 37.5 finn/12.5 Asaaf/37.5 EF/12.5 Lacaune. ewe 50 would give 25 Finn/25 Asaaf/37.5 EF/12.5 Lacaune.

@@theShepherdesslove the fresh vegetable addition. I've looked into pyrroloquinoline quinone in angiosperms, and bacteria in contrast; then, after realizing that the bacteria studied were freshly cultured and the fruits/vegetables were likely not freshly grown/picked outside of the lab, considered that pyrroloquinoline quinones are likely in much higher amounts in clean untouched environments and therefore also much higher within freshly picked fruits and vegetables; thusly, the studies regarding those amounts in fruits have likely been botched with ill intent. I believe strongly that these mitochondria reviving nutrients are rife within fruiting nature initially, and if any fruits are eaten straight from bushes/trees, that they will dramatically increase the production and quality of the creatures.

Small time Shepard here👋 I have 15 finnsheep yews. Last summer i started hand milking 4 who had only rams. Most important imo is the temperament of the yew. If you end up spending 15 minutes catching the one sheep who makes 5dl its nice but the one who walks up to you to be milked and only gives 2 dl is better in my books. Also for guys with big hands trying to hand milk, try putting the yew between your legs, bending yourself over the rump and with your right hand milking the left uder and vice versa. Holding the jar with the free hand, right under the udder. Works way better for me when i can use my thumb and forefinger to do the squeezing. Also be patient, first day took me half and houer to milk one, end of summer a couple of minutes depending on the moms mood. Train the sheep and yourself and by God, it will be good 🕊️

Awassi rams can be crossed but my experience is that Awassi ewes have difficulty being crossed to other breeds of sheep. I’d love to talk about this further with you if you have more experience than me! I don’t own the breed personally, this is just what a few people who own them have told me.

@@whoopsydaisyfarm2820 I truly don’t think the fat tail is that much of an obstacle for non fat tail rams considering sheep and goats will breed through a fence given the chance. If that is the reasoning
@whoopsydaisyfarm2820
@whoopsydaisyfarm2820 7 ай бұрын
@quailjailss do you have experience with Awassi sheep? I am basing my information off experiences shared with me by breeders of Awassi sheep- it’s not conjecture it’s observation and breeding facts shared by a veterinarian who raises Awassi. Some Awassi sheep have fat tails larger than their udders in the United States. If the rams do not have the genetic memory to move this out of the way, the breeding act will be unsuccessful
