Hello All and welcome back to The Bearded Woodworker. In this episode, I make foot extensions to rise my recliner a little higher to make it easier for me to get up out of it. I am 6'5" and as you can see, I am pretty large and heavy too, and I was finding it a little challenging to get up out of my chair. I used regular Doug Fir 2"x4" dimensional lumber. I first started off by ripping the rounded edges off and cutting them down to size. I ended up thinking it was a good idea to span a brace across the 2 legs(?) to keep it a little more stable. I used a piece of 1"x4" with pocket holes on each side and glued and screwed it in place.
So essentially, the chair is raise up 3" inches, which is the height of 2 2"x4"s. and it makes a huge difference. Hopefully this video has perhaps helped you or inspired you to do the same if you as in need of it.
Thank you so much for watching!!

I'm so happy I found this video. I was going to make a whole platform. What a waste of money and time that would have been. Thank you Sir.

@@TheBeardedWoodworker Thank you, no I didn't wonder because I knew my chair and size is different to yours. But the principle is the same. To raise it up and make it easier to get out of it. But thank you for considering my thoughts.

I wish you lived just north of the border. I’d hire you to do the exact same thing for our lazy boy chair for my disabled wife. The end of the wooden handle broke off too so getting that replaced as well would be fantastic. Nice work!

Sorry, Jeff. I'm stuck here in Oregon for sure. 😀 You don't have to get too fancy with it by putting curve, you can just stack 2x4s for the feet. Good luck, I hope you can get it done for your wife!

Would this work for a decking couch? Of course more of them though!

I don't see why not. You just want make sure they have some sort of stability so they don't knock over. Being they are further apart, I think you could brace them together like I did, and you should be stable.

Hi, Gary! I need one of these SO badly. I am 63 and 5'10. In great health, but being taller, it's not as easy getting up out of my favorite Lazy boy rocker/recliner, lol! Do you by chance make and sell these?

This is great, looking to do the same thing on the same style recliner feet. What did you fasten the base with? Maybe I missed it, but was it wood screws?

I basically use the star bit deck screws on almost everything now, so it was probably 1 1/4" deck screws. It seems to be holding pretty good. Don't forget to put the brace in between (that I didn't film), that's gonna help with the stability. Good luck!

How many inches did your modification rise the recliner ?
@TheBeardedWoodworker
@TheBeardedWoodworker 3 жыл бұрын
It seems to be 3"-4". This recliner has a flat bar bent for feet. I didn't remove anything, just screwed the new wooden "feet" to the old metal feet via drilling a hole through the metal and attaching with screws.

How dare you make something that benefits yourself!! Think of your fellow man!!! You should be ashamed!! Comfortably ashamed!!, Seriously though I think my folks would appreciate this concept - I will send it to them and see. Also kitty can now find under the chair when you are in it safely.

I know, I can be a bit selfish sometimes. Lol! It's so nice though. Thanks for the comment. Perhaps this will benefit your parents and yes....safer for kitties!👍🏻

I can’t believer a seasoned woodworking maintenance person is using a table saw without the proper gloves and block pushing tools. ATTENTION: NEVER EVER DO THIS AT HOME OR IN THE WORKPLACE‼️ 2018 Statistics: In 2018, 58% of accidental amputations (3,580 cases) involved some type of machinery. Tools, instruments, and equipment were involved in 7% of accidental amputations. The “Bearded Woodworker” needs to get a clue‼️
