Raising White Plymouth Rocks so we can cut out the middleman!

Жыл бұрынSeeing at how things can change in the blink of an eye we decided our meat chicken business raising and selling cornish cross meat chickens we order online is not very sustainable long term. What happens if we can't get mail ordered chickens in the future? (bird flu, postage delays, hatcheries shutting down and what not) It is much safer for us to start producing our very own chicks in house to raise up for meat and eggs. We know exactly how they were raised, what breed they are and have an endless supply of birds as long as we can continue hatching the eggs. Plus they are much slower growing birds & don't eat as much or make as much of a mess as the standard meat birds so it's a win win. We may not be able to just "order" them on demand because we have to do the work to hatch and keep a breeding stock.. But at the end we feel better about the final product & feel like it's a whole lot more self sufficient.

I'm cross breeding These Hens and Dark Cornish Roosters. I have a White Plymouth Rock Rooster. It was my bonus chicken.

The biggest white rocks I ever had I got from Belt Hatchery in California, they are not the trademarked commercial birds, but they got really big for me. I ordered some from a different hatchery this year, and they don’t even come close to Belt’s…

I ordered them as baby chicks online. I don't know of anyone with full sized chickens available right now due to the growing popularity. I'd suggest getting started with chicks as soon as possible 😊 these white Plymouth rocks only took about 4 1/2 months to get full size and start laying eggs if I remember correctly.

I recommend freedom rangers, red rangers etc. they grow way faster than heritage breeds, but they live longer than the Cornish rock cross- and they can breed naturally/they don’t get too big. I mean I’m all for people using heritage breeds!!! Just saying you’ll get more bang for your buck using the red rangers or something similar. Feed conversion is way better. Chicken is chicken though :) And yes, it will make a difference if they are getting a higher protein ration. Awesome vid thanks for sharing! I love your game hen! Gamefowl are the best. Best mothers… very hardy.

We will definitely be experimenting to see how heavy these can get, I will have to try a batch feeding them high protein feed only when we start hatching their eggs😁 I've heard of the red rangers, I'm not sure why we haven't tried those yet. Are they good egg layers too? Yes I love raising heritage breeds,it gives me an old fashioned feel, I love anything vintage when it comes to homes & furniture & it's starting to turn into the animals too haha

@@ourvisionfarm2893 absolutely!!! There is a reason these heritage breeds are still here! The dual purpose breeds are the birds that fed our grandparents. Back then if your birds couldn’t sustain themselves on your land with a little bit of corn, wheat, millet, whatever grain you could easily get, they didn’t last long. I loved listening to my grandparents talk about chicken husbandry back in the day. It is so different than what we think of. Although their diet wasn’t the best in some months- we know that a diet of straight corn isn’t nutritionally balanced, it amazes me how hardy these birds were and how they still produced relatively well when allowed to forage for their own diet. Anyway (sorry lol) back to the red rangers. I have a friend in north alabama that has a flock of them. She says they are decent layers. About the same consistency as an Orpington. About every other day. I’m excited for you to go through your experiment with them. I love trying out breeds to see how they fit on my property. For me- I love my gamefowl/Rhode Island red and gamefowl/Wyandotte crosses. They are just so smart and aware of predators more than other chickens I’ve raised! Always on the lookout and know when to hide. Excellent mothers which is so important to me. Hope everything goes well with your White rock flock :)

We've rehomed all our chickens due to moving in the next yr. I wasn't selling them though,just keeping them for egg laying and trying out a couple for meat. We sell our Cornish cross meat chickens for $15 already packaged and frozen.
