Seeing at how things can change in the blink of an eye we decided our meat chicken business raising and selling cornish cross meat chickens we order online is not very sustainable long term. What happens if we can't get mail ordered chickens in the future? (bird flu, postage delays, hatcheries shutting down and what not) It is much safer for us to start producing our very own chicks in house to raise up for meat and eggs. We know exactly how they were raised, what breed they are and have an endless supply of birds as long as we can continue hatching the eggs. Plus they are much slower growing birds & don't eat as much or make as much of a mess as the standard meat birds so it's a win win. We may not be able to just "order" them on demand because we have to do the work to hatch and keep a breeding stock.. But at the end we feel better about the final product & feel like it's a whole lot more self sufficient.
