Things are about to kick off into full swing with our DIY renovation of our stone cabin in the foothills of the Italian alps. But first we need to flatten this terrace in order to have space to bring in all of our building supplies before we start pouring the concrete foundation inside of the house.

If I were you, I'd make it a priority to build that retaining wall. No matter what the engineer says, in these past few years rain and wind here on the Alps have being increasingly violent. I understand that stabilizing the house is the number one job, but seriously, don't let years pass and keep it monitored, especially this coming autumn. This is usually the season were landslides are most common.

you should put in concrete pillions to sir behind the new stone wall. have it going 1m deeper than the wall, and have rebar coming out to lock into the morter you put in those parts of the rock wall you will place with concrete at the back of the rocks. that way it look like dry stack, but hold like a concrete one

Make certain that the drainage of the terraces is corrected so that those times when too much rain comes the crumbly soil does not become waterlogged and start slipping downhill while gliding down against the lubricated wet bedrock.
@lfuentes4098
@lfuentes4098 9 ай бұрын
Yes. Slope it away from your house. And I’m glad you’re leveling the terrace. I think eventually you might want to do that on all your smaller terraces since with time erosion has made slopes on all of them. But since in the future you’ll probably be adding more gardens and animals you’ll appreciate the more level useable space.

@taiikomochiyuurichin1459
@taiikomochiyuurichin1459 8 ай бұрын
@sgrvtl7183 leveling the surface will help slow down boulders but if the water becomes too high at bedrock there is possibility of downward slippage but as been said the walls are porous so buildup should no happen. Would be great to expand some of the terraces as to flatness so that it can attempt to slowdo boulders and make gardening area larger. Some fruit trees would be great if the snow does not kill them and maybe some esplanade along the wall faces for fruit bearing plants. I love stonework and terraces.
@taiikomochiyuurichin1459
@taiikomochiyuurichin1459 8 ай бұрын
@sgrvtl7183 you can also start to mulch them with the weed vegetation and tree leaves as well as non-fat kitchen scrapes to build up the soil and maybe sift the soil of some of the small socks that can be used against filling in behind the terrace walls.

Very exciting developments! Must say though, I'm amazed your structural engineer raised no issues about the removal of secure underpinning of the top terrace wall - the thrust of that enormous mass above is transmitted not straight down but at a spreading diagonal vector (in cross-section). I get it that you plan to build a wall back: but this kind of structure isn't just 'a garden wall'. The forces involved with landslip, water action and frost heave are *serious* sh!t - I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you guys! 😮😂

I had that when I went to Germany , I spoke not a word of German and then after six months I was able to understand a wee bit and after a year I was able to make myself understood! Now many decades later I speak it fluently with hardly an accent, and read and write it too. You are very courageous and brave to handle all the problems you are confronted with and not giving up, though I am sure you sometimes feel desperate and ask yourself what the heck you have taken on?!! That digger on that terrace freaks me out. I would worry he would tumble right down.

What you have done makes perfect sense, it not only makes the space more usable for the future and for now with storing supplies, but you said right at the start of your journey that there had been a build up of mud on the terraces, so you are not only returning it to what it once was, but using the ample stones you have to make supporting walls.

Great work . Take care that rain wash can remove the silt and destabilise terraced edges above roadway below house.

Very exciting to hear house building to come soon. I just wonder about all that loose rock and dirt piled up, looks like a landslide waiting to happen. Fingers crossed you stabilize it soon ish! Very much enjoy your work!!

Amazing video, thank you so much it was so informative. Who knew all that was there? Please show more of what you do inside the house if you can? And please make the videos longer too. Thank you so very much.

Absolutely awesome digging job. Now I know why my son insisted on going to heavy equipment College...it is interesting and fascinating...more space, as the terrace seemed narrow..lovely! Can't wait to see the house completed.. Stay as long as they guve you and finish your dream..visa or not...never give up... .
