FULL ON THROTTLE DRIVING IMPRESSIONS AND MORE DRIVING IN THIS PART 2 OF THE COROLLA APEX REVIEW

If I've learned nothing else in my 30-plus years on this planet, about cars,it's that cars like this have all the features and the feel of a prototype 4 something....bigger. Expect a Corolla TRD in with more hp and a retuned suspension in the very near future.

Agreed, but still, 200 Hp would've been nice at the very least... Toyota for some reason is so averse to developing forced induction motors. They could've created a well-rounded, reliable 1.7L twin scroll turbocharger with vvt. It would've made this live up to "Apex."

@@GOD999MODE i feel like toyota is going into different direction compared to other auto makers. Main reason turbo is used these days is not to get insane performance numbers out of the car but to get better gas mileage.(I am talking about turbos in small to medium sized sedans, hatchbacks, cross-overs, compact and small SUVs) Automakers are using smaller engines ( 1 liter to 1.8 liter displacement), to haul you in city and turbo kicks in to giving you passing capability on highway. So for everyday use, you are basically using a smaller engine which gives good gas mileage number to the customer and regulators but when you floor it, it acts as bigger engine. Whereas, Toyota uses a medium sized engine (for the segment) with medium performance numbers(HP and Torque) and decent gas mileage in all kinds of traffic and weather conditions. When toyota needs even gas mileage for their vehicle instead of using a smaller engine with turbo, they use hybrid system which basically do the trick and i think toyota hybrid system with NA engine is better bet in longer term than turbo including the battery replacement after 12-13 years, from financial stand point but from technological stand point as well. While others are busy turboing their line ups to satisfy EPA, Toyota is using hybrid system. No wonder they have largest number of hybrid/EVs in their line up compared to everybody else.

Yeah, an OEM stock Corolla peeling out? Not the fastest, but still, in a reliable, dependable, durable N/A engine with a history of longevity for several hundred thousand miles, live the Civics, but stylish, comfortable, and affordable, and worth the price for what it has. I still don't think many of the other cars mentioned can match or beat it all around except for the Civic Sports and Si, but the turbo versions are in a slightly different category.

Richard Favreau I’d say that was true 10 years ago.... MAYBE even as recent as 5 years ago... but the reliability gap between Toyota and Kia, Hyundai has been narrowed so much that I just can’t imagine the increase in price being value added. Kia and Hyundai are the ONLY manufacturers I know that give 100k warranties on their entire line up.... I’d prefer a Toyota if it’s the same price MAYBE just for resale value but that’s about it.

It looks like Toyota really dialed in the chassis of this car and I am so glad they made a manual. A manual makes even a slow car feel fast. There definitely looks like there is a lot of driving fun to be had with this car but why go through so much effort to make a good manual, give it auto rev matching and only make a little more that 100 cars of out 6,000? I could understand maybe 500 but 100 is such a low number. I hope they all sell because I think that is the only way we will get a GR Corolla with a 6 speed manual. The Honda Civic Type R, the Hyundai Veloster N and the Subaru WRX STi are waiting for Toyota to come out and play. It is time for the Toyota to step back in the game with a high performance Corolla. Again, job well done Joe!

@@RaitisRides YW, I own an Corolla XRS 5 speed 2009, and it is a let down too in the fun dept. Great everyday for the past 12 years, but it isn't at the level of an Si or even the first C-XRS with the 2ZZ engine and 6MT. Seriously, would love to see you teach us all how to go "on throttle" on how to operate a manual transmission and heel/toe. I can do the first but not well versed in the second. This Apex or any Corolla manual would be a perfect first car for the newbie enthusiast just learning how to drive.

@@trdrav4 I can understand where you are coming from but I am sure it has been really reliable. I need to put something like that together.
@johnsonjacob3525
@johnsonjacob3525 3 жыл бұрын
You are comparing this to the staid pedestrian L and Hybrid trims, not the great SE/XSE these are built upon. Like the TRD Camry and Avalon, it is what is, and a good basis for the added power from a GR but with the durability and reliability for the majority that don't need the extra power, or extra cost, and more potential reduction in reliability and durability
@trdrav4
@trdrav4 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnsonjacob3525 I still don't see much of a point for this car with the GR coming, because the GR is suppose to give the Corolla buyer that extra performance you don't get from either the 1.8 or 2.0 NA models. If reliability is all you care about, what's the point of spending more money on the suspension bits that make the Corolla less comfortable to drive? Regular Corollas are still commuter vehicles for the most part. The logical thing to do would be to just get a regular SE sedan with the 6MT and go out and buy the available parts from Cusco, Remark and RS-R.

So this thing is like $28K, which means the GR version will be like $35K or more. For a Corolla. When a 300 hp Camry TRD is $32K. I can't fathom who would buy this retail, but maybe after they sit on the lots for months and months they will bargain. After all, sedan + manual = no sale. That said, this is exactly the type of car I grew up with and what I love. But given its high cost barrier to entry and horrific resale value (no Corolla used car buyer will ever want a manual), Toyota be smokin' something.
