In today’s episode of Figuring Out, we have Former Coal Secretary of India Anil Swarup in conversation with Raj Shamani. He passed IAS with AIR 14 and became the IAS officer in Uttar Pradesh, throughout his career he has worked on various tough projects, brought significant changes, and worked with many CMs. He has written books like “Ethical Dilemmas of a Civil Servant”, “Not Just A Civil Servant’ and many others. Today he is also a public speaker and speaks in various countries.
We talked about how IAS became IAS and got placed in his home state Uttar Pradesh, he shared about his early days, the challenges he faced, how he got transferred, how he used to be in ethical dilemmas, and how he created value systems to deal with everything. He further shared how he became the Coal Secretary of India and the challenges that he solved. We also talked about his experience with U.P CM Yogi Adityanath and PM Narendra Modi.

Time limitation!!! The way Anil Swarup Sir Ji spoke about public administration is quite impressive. I loved his "bold, frank, honest, to-the-point answering and positive mindset approach" attitude. Got to know a lot about the career of civil servants. Unlike other civil officers, he was quite transparent about internal matters. This episode is enough to prove that "people corrupt power, not power corrupts people."

Anil saheb told bitter truth, one is to be happy to go any work place ,work hard and should enjoy the work. Never be obliged to leaders. We must think if someone has to go to such inconvenient why not me .

Every government officer should listen to this podcast. Then they will realize how to deal with corrupt politicians. At the end of the day, politicians come and go, but one can only transfer an honest civil servant. And nowadays due to the internet, no place is distant or remote.

Mr Anil is experienced and an OG. Old Gold. Interviewer needs to get more matured. Mr. Anil is listening to interview but his sentences are iron barrier to every aspects which teaches wisdom n management for a civil servant. He is an iron intellectual.

Otherwise, this may seem like a subtle PR move for the ruling party, especially with the detailed questioning about the PM's meetings.
