I just don't get why people want single speeds. I had them as a kid and they sucked. You had to walk up steep hills and you're always spinning out, going down hills. Once they came out with 10 speeds, I never looked back.

When you live in a flat city, single speeds are quite fine because you would use only 2 gears 99% of the time if you had gears, so you lose almost nothing. But on the other hand you get away from the expense and weight of having a front gear, back derailleur, cables and a cassette. It's a quite good trade. Still, I like having gears on the back, not on the front.
