“Fire up the Quattro” 🙂

Always wanted one, but could never afford one, nearest I got was an old Audi coupe. Strange How Audi are always blowing there own trumpet about the original Audi UR quattro , but you ask any quattro or classic Audi owner, Audi are not interested I keeping there heritage going in spares like Porche, Mercedes and BMW are. I had a lot to do with club audi some years ago and got to hear about the difficulty getting spares and if the did, how expensive they were. It's a shame, because the quattro is an iconic car and a rally legend, like my Subaru impreza RB5.

This was a true game changer. It had a profound effect on the market in it's day. A seriously jaw dropping car when you consider what else was on the market at the time. We all wanted one, still do really.

how can you mention how fancy electric windows are when it has fancier heated seats? 😁

Literally by coincidence finished rewatching Ashes to Ashes this evening. Fire up the Quattro!!

I think you're misled if you're expecting a sportscar-like drive out of the regular Quattro, as it merely is a comfortable cruiser. You are misled, because what you are expecting actually isn't the Audi Quattro. What you really want is the Audi Sport Quattro.

I had a 1985 10v back in 1995 when I was 24, I thought it was the best car in the world and it only cost £4500 at the time. I had it for 2 years and all I had to do apart from normal servicing was change a CV boot. It was so capable at the time, I had a metallic graphite one and my friend had an alpine white model and we had some great drives in the times we had them. It was the only car I have sold for a profit but like everyone who had one I wish I’d kept it, I keep looking at the classifieds at classic UR cars but can’t help feeling the memory would be better than the reality these days with being used to the modern cars performance. Still love them.

I always remember watching an Audi Quattro at Curborough race track with over 600 BHP and it's short wheel base in the early 1990's and it always trounced every other cars time's, but the most memorable is that exhaust note and warble of its engine, great car, thanks for reviewing a classic piece of Audi engineering.

Nearly sporting an 80's Rally Jacket at the start Jay! Another superb video, this is my no 1 without a doubt favourite car of all time since first seeing and hearing one 40 years ago. Been lucky enough to drive a 10V for a day and completely agree with you. 10V sound is like nothing else!

That back to back between the 10V and the 20V cars was masterful, many thanks! PS: Watching an S1 Quattro mangle any corner in any weather and any road surface with that 5-cyl warble and the wastegate blowing off gave all Quattros to me icon status.

I love the later version flush headlights, blacked out rear fascia and that digi dash. Audi icon. My favourite Audi of all time.

My favourite Group B car is 205 t16 with Timo Salonnen behind the steering wheel

Fell in love with a GT5S because of the sound of the 5 cylinder engine. I was 16 then but hooked. At 22 I had a GT5S. 23 a 1983 10V Quattro Turbo. Then a theft put the insurance out of reach for a 24 year old. A Coupe quattro (the non-turbo, non-flared wheel arch model) kept the dream alive. A crash resulted in relegation to an Audi 80. Then a 1984 10V. And in 2002 a pristine 1991 RR in Tornado Red. A move abroad in 2021 meant saying goodbye to that at a classic auction. Now in another boring A4 TDi. As flawed as it was/is, for me, always the best car in the world. I drove a V10 Plus Sport R8. My old 1983 10V was 10X more thrilling to drive.

Hallo James,Thanks for this video. I have a 1981 version in silver. I had at aprox time also the first M3 and i can tell you that to 120Km/h the M3 was slower for not talking about when it was bad weather. In 1981 there was not many daily drivers faster than this car. I had also the Carrera 2,7 210 Hp and even i loved it you could not drive it faster than the Quattro. Of course later came younger cars that had better handling like the Escort Cosworth, but it was already the 90ties. Ps.I was sending you replay e mail.

That series has inspired me to look at an early manual r8 or v8 manual vantage. I mean a bonafide super car for bmw 3 series money. Couldnt ask for more.

I had a 1981 Coupe FWD in silver. Bought it from a mate in 1983 who was just trying to get out of a lease so I got it on the cheap. I lived in L.A. and had a place in Mammoth Mountain, 320 miles to the north. It was a stellar road car and even with the normally aspirated 5 at only 130 bhp, it would cruise at 85-90 mph effortlessly. Thing was amazing in the snow even with "summer" tires. Loved that car and still think it's one handsome car, even in the non-quattro iteration!

I had the chance to drive one of these in Spa. In the Rivage Corner, it was getting "a bit tricky" and I drove it just slowly the rest of the course. Still, a fantastic car and icon of its time. I always appreciated it a bit more as it was later more less the only car left based on a road-going vehicle and because the tech that was introduced with it. Not to forget the sound :-)

We owned C567ULM for almost four years, and loved it. Tornado red was THE colour for a quattro [note lower-case q] and although it had issues, we put up with them, well, because.... Turned out the issues stemmed from intermittent blockages in the fuel tank, but after thousands of pounds had been spent in vain, we'd had enough. AM Cars took it back, and we moved on. Wish't I'd persevered though. I'd have it back in the blink of an eye, except that now I definitely could not afford to do so.

Your conclusion with both these and the Lancia are spot on, the earlier (10 valves versions as opposed to the latter 20 valvers) cars with both models are the more sweeter ones. This was also the case inline with reviews back in the days these cars ruled the roost. Spot on.

. . Had two from 1984 to 1991 . . seat mountings replaced 3 times (can see they are on the way out the amount you moved about in the film) . . 2 drivers side door window winding mechanisms (also as rare as hens teeth back in the day) . . Sachs suspension, Ansa exhaust slight tune to 250BHp and was my Essex back road blaster par excellence . . nothing could touch it back then . . on service costs as well . . but comparing an UR Quattro to anything modern or 1990's is a fools errand . .

The steering was offset as it was mainly sold in left hand drive, the right hand drive was a swap round as the call for right hand drive wasn't so great, they did a swap but not a direct one, Audi UK should have told you about that, nice to see familiar local roads, great vid, had 2 Quattro's, biggest mistake I made was selling them .

Thank you for pointing out the quattro's lack of success in late Group B competition. The famous (shorter) Sport Quattro and its E2 (winged) guise won only one rally each. I like early quattros but the one everybody remembers is one of the two most overrated competition cars, the other one being the 787B.

Always so cool to see it again. What i very enjoyed was the engine sound absolutely unimitable. You have there the 220PS (the previous with cat. had 170PS and the first MK1 10valves had 200PS).

Ahh the only Audi ever made that could interest me to own a car with four rings. Forget all the over styled, ugly, fake noise new stuff. Thiiiiiiis is an Audi!

Great review. This is where my love of Audi started, but ironically I have never owned a UR. The closest I came was an 87 coupe Quattro followed by an S2 with the 20V engine which was an awesome machine. My diesel Q7 would almost certainly show this a clean pair of heels now though but god I still want one.

Love these, always wanted one, I still look at adverts..when they come up. My dad had an Audi GT Coupe back in the early 90s.. same shape. Love them!! Bought my Mk2 Focus RS as I wanted that 5 cylinder sound.. Ur S1 Quattro still THE rally car for me! *I would refit the Audi Quattro badges on the back of this one, and the 4 rings along the doors.. Perfect then👌🏼

Love them wanted one, never going to happen. So thinking outside the box, i picked up a URS4 Audi 100 with the same running gear. Close enough, you are only an exhaust system away from that rally car sound! Cheap as chips too.

I remember the "Killer B's" like it was yesterday, and the Audi was almost GOD like. Fast forward 40 years and I realize that the Audi is now sought of in the same class as a Lamborghini Countach. It is one of those cars that you idealize, but don't want to drive, because it might not live up to your memories. Unless of course you can be blessed enough to drive a proper S1. Yes, they got beaten by the competition in the later years, but damn, watching them in person was amazing.

I crashed my RG250V by high siding it on a roundabout racing my boss in his SWB coupe Quattro. Back in 1989 something. I was 19. Ripped all flesh of my forearm with gravel rash. Ah. Good times! He had Haatge? tuned original m3 and a first gen 750iL at the same time as well. We were the UK service agents for Blaupunkpt I fixed a literal million of those dam things. They were standard fit in everything for a time. We saw palettes of them.

1:50 The Radiator is to the right hand side of the engine covered with the black shroud, not in front of it, it would be even longer if it was, unless it has a small additional one like the S2 ABY has.

Yup 90's perfect blend of accessible performance & reliability without nany-ing controls or additional weight. 80's cars look awesome but don't drive as well and not good dailies, will mist up, leak, have issues etc. 00's cars are ok esp. early ones but later ones getting fat and heavy. Is your Celica a better drive than the UR ???

I remember when I was in the market to buy a 4x4 I could not afford the german car insurance that went with the quattro at the time, so had to purchase a Sierra 4x4 turbo. It wasn't bad but as I do now I will always yearn for the original Quattro.

I owned one of these. 20v in a Cabury's purple. It was a fantastic machine tho even at the times a little rough around the edges. I'd love another one of these and actually would love a chance to drive one .. should I buy another? Who knows. As you stated to keep chipping away I think we should do a collaboration .. or more accurately you should let me appear in one of your videos out of sheer pity lol. Joking aside I loved this edit and this car. Awesome. PS I wasn't joking about the collaboration lol

Always thought the VW Sirocco was a miniature Audi Quattro, very similar body shape, love these cars and the Sorocco.

any chance of a review of the short wheelbase version which is one of my all time fav cars along with the BMW M3 E30.

I am actually jealous, but no, 80's automotive would be the RS Cosworth or Countach, yes I know the Countach was born in the 70's, but what boy growing up in the UK did not have an Athena Countach poster on their wall.

My mate had one exactly like that in the late 80s, same pearlescent colour with the 5 Audi rings on the side, full grey leather interior.Should have kept it.

Just a couple of points, the fuel tank on the quattro is huge 90 litres if memory serves so 500 miles isn’t unrealistic as I never drive my quattro from full to empty but my 2.2 GT driven with a mix of steady and hardish used to give me 400 miles between stops. In regards to the ‘drivers car’ statement I suggest driving other cars from the era to get your perspective in check as it’s 100% a drivers cars with great feedback from the car providing plenty of organic feel. Regarding rally dominance, the first quattros were extremely dominant and due to that they were handicapped with weight penalties to allow the other cars a chance which, sadly caused reliability issues but this ever really gets spoken about (same thing happened in BTCC with the A4). In regards to group B, yes there was a fundamental problem with the cars DNA but it’s worth pointing out that despite being up against prototypes they actually started to get the sport quattro to work and win against them and I’m pretty sure when they left group B they were leading. After group B we disbanded the sport quattro went head to head with the other group an prototypes at Pikes Peak hill climb and destroyed them all which solidified the fact that it wouldn’t have been much different had group B continued . Shame Audi never got around to making the mid engined quattro as it would have showed the true potential of how far ahead they were in those days. One thing we can all agree on is that the sound was unmistakable and still, even today sounds so unique even amongst the Audi derived Volvo engines Ford’s (but thank you for those cars). Maybe you had to be from the era to fully appreciate this car but I can tell you as an owner, no car evoked as much emotion in the general public as my quattro did as I cannot tell how many people came up to me to talk to me or even follow me to my destination to come running over in awe then reminiscing through childhood memories. Some of these people jumped out of Porsche’s which tells you a lot about this car. Changed the motor industry forever and sent shockwaves through it all the way to Ferrari. In it’s day it was arguably the quickest point to point car on the road. I love them ❤

If you want it to turn, put the weight on the dang nose, sharp turn and fire it out of the curve with quattro point and shoot magic.

JayEmm, you can't compare a production unibody chassis front-engine vs special-purpose built tubular space frame chassis mid-engine of the Lancia 037, Delta S4, & Peugeot 205 T16. They are like night and day. Did you remember the Delta S4 drove over the cliff, crashed and exploded? The driver and co-driver would still be alive today if they had driven the Sport quattro Evo2. Audi put driver and co-drivers safety over and above winning a race or championship. During the Group 4 and B WRC campaign, no Audi factory drivers and co-drivers lose their lives.

You obviously haven’t taken a performance lap of how good the 20v is., saying you’ve got to be cautious on the bends is utter rubbish, the gearbox was absolutely fabulous up and down the full range it sticks to the road like glue , but if your going to drive her like a Sunday driver then your not going to waken up that big Turbo, and experience the true performance of.her , my 20v before and regret I sold her, for a WRX was simply stunning in performance and handling in any conditions, she was absolutely fabulous in long distance motorway driving these cars were built for,, the seats were very comfortable too and in fuel consumption for me was brilliant, for me the 20v was the one you had to experience , it’s still a fabulous car today !!!!

1300kg IS lightweight for a road car. These have always struck me being a back to front Porsche in that instead the mass of the engine being behind the rear axle this one has it hanging out the front. Audi = Vorsprung durch Understeer Maybe it more of a lead tipped arrow 😂 I dearly dearly loved these when they were current.
