On his 90th birthday, the legendary consumer advocate, corporate critic and four-time presidential candidate Ralph Nader joins Democracy Now! for an in-depth conversation about U.S. democracy and why "Congress is a weapon of mass destruction." He says lawmakers have shredded the country's social safety net, refused to rein in the U.S. war machine, allowed white-collar crime to go unpunished, failed to enforce tax fairness and more. "All of these are very unpopular with the American people," Nader says. He also discusses the 2024 presidential race and encourages people to "vote their conscience" and "find some way out of this two-party duopoly gulag.” Nader, who publishes the monthly print-only newspaper the Capitol Hill Citizen, was recently profiled in The Washington Post for his ongoing advocacy.

The election of a 3rd Party Candidate isn't going to happen without at least Ranked Choice Voting. I had a chance to meet Nader but declined. Why? Because when media tried to do what they had done successfully in the 1992 Election (split the vote, get the guy who signed whatever the Republican majority put on his desk), Nader blew it. "There is no difference between the political Left and Right in the country." Said Ralph, repeatedly and during the debates in the 2000 campaign. Do we have a moral compass and people-first agenda in the Supreme Court and other Courts in our 3rd Branch of Government? We do not. Ask Sheldon Whitehouse. Do we have a head start fighting climate change? Ask the planet and those who pay attention to it. Ralph wasn't going to win without at least Ranked Choice, so what did he do instead? He told Republican Voters to vote for Guns (even though an Amendment protects that). He told Republican Voters to vote for the $300 Check Bush promised from the Clinton/Gore surplus. He told Americans "look away" when the US Supreme Court took the decision away from Voters and decided it themselves, along Party lines. I'm grateful to Ralph for a great many things: Seat Belts, Airlines having to compensate for bumping passengers but Ralph set us back decades in the 2000 election. "Thanks" Ralph.

Corporate America and the two party system would not let him. Look how both parties treat anyone running other than Biden and Trump. The attacks on Independent candidates is viscous. I keep saying that if the majority of people vote for whoever is on the ballot other than Biden/Trump it will prevent either of the two to get to 270 electoral votes and then people should demand an input.

He seems to be saying Democracy in US is rotten because I don't like the people my fellow citizens have voted into office. He has always had the right to stand for election himself; its just that when he did, the people didn't vote him in. My suspicion is that he doesn't believe in elective democracy at all. Like so many Left wingers in history, he will use the word 'Democracy', but only as a propaganda weapon to disguise his real intention; Socialism. We don't need to look far for another example of that; this channel.

I love Ralph Nader! Happy Birthday! People don't understand what a movement that was back in the 2000 election when he was running. I traveled with a tiny caravan of people around the Midwest that were working for him out of a Chicago Branch - in Pilsin to be precise. I remember when I was there in St. Louis during the Presidential debates where Nader was removed from the debate between Bush and Gore. Some camera man at the time who without a person to hold his boom mike, asked me to hold it for him as we followed Ralph and his people out of the debate along with the rest of the press. I was practically right next to him the whole time as they where getting him into the back seat of a car and he was arguing with security about he rights to be in the debate. I would venture to say say that helping out on that campaign was one of the best times of my life. I have so many stories to tell about my time helping with that campaign, and Ralph and his female VP I forget her name, were the most amazing speakers. I could go on and on. That was such an incredible movement at the time, that was completely squelched by the main stream media. Too bad he never became president, the man was true true true genius. A serious American-hero.

Ralph Nader is, again, a man of integrity that i would surely vote for if he were to run for office. He sticks his finger in the face of the entire US government and asks the questions that people need to ask. The current political system needs to be dismantled, and until it is, nothing will change. The US has failed and will never be as strong as it once was. An embarrassment, and looked at as weak. I don't care how strong they think their military is, they are weak and will never accomplish what is needed to run a successful country. Guns and flags don't make you strong. That's been proven many times. The child of the world has a lot to learn. Good luck.

Happy birthday, Mr. Ralph Nader. As I listen to your interview, I, as a political economist, write the following poem in anticipation of the emancipation of the Americans and dedicate this poem to you. All the best. Mohammed Mizan. Systematically keeping the majority of the American people under the debt so that they have no choice and no voice rather than to vote for one of the two Republicans or Democrats as their fate. This systematic deprivation is going on before the creation of the United States of America now and then, the difference is voting rights. Through the practice of a simple economic theory which is called the Creative Balance for Development people can enjoy their financial freedom based on their spending power through every single transaction, a minimum of 2.5% then they have some legitimate choice and voice to reform their ruthless political system!

I voted for Nader, I voted for Stein. I wish more people would have the guts to vote conscience instead of doing the same thing over and over again (blue no matter who) and getting the same results. The whole world desperately needs for us to be brave.

Wow! What a great man. I miss him. I volunteer for his organization years ago. I voted for him to be President. My mother always loved him and followed him. His mind is so sharp, and he is still the fighter for the people, and what is truly democracy. Thank you Ralph Nader for all you have done. Thank you Amy for having him on.

Ralph was running for president as a Dem in 2004. Not only was he not allowed on the debate stage in Boston, he was threatened with arrest if he showed up and sat in the crowd.

that wasn't the first time. I remember when he ran in 1996, and 2000 he ran, and they blocked him from being in the dem debates, had to get the cops. He sued, but nothing happened

Why didn’t you plan more time Amy? Shameful, really really shameful. You need a half hour plus just with Ralph Nader, especially on his 90th birthday.

Happy 90th Birthday, Mr. Ralph Nader! You sound no different now than you did in the ‘60’s! I hope you feel as well as you sound! Congratulations, fine Sir! I’m going to purchase your newspaper as I’m very worried about so many things, our Congress, the presidential race, the purchasing of Senate seats, etc. but mostly about how the attitudes of the two parties toward each other. There is so much hatred, suspicion, Russian interests(?), lying, etc. It was bad enough before Trump but now all of that hatred, sniping and vitriol is infecting the whole US of A! It’s spilling down Capital Hill and it’s frightening and confusing. I guess I’ll read your books mentioned by Amy Goodman and go from there. That being said, the mention of Corvairs brought back some old memories as one of my best friends had a Corvair in HS. We used to go out cruising in it at night, making the rounds of different drive-ins, looking at/for boys, of course! And my favorite uncle was crazy about them, too. He bought one and was forever working on it, replacing one part or another, the work was ongoing, for sure!!
