Every Little Step written and produced by L.A Reid and Babyface for Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel album; has been subject to speculation in recent years. New Edition's former manager in a 2013 interview, alleged that Ralph Tresvant sang lead vocals on Every Little Step due to Bobby's [alleged] unprofessional behavior and drug abuse. This video essay details the history of LA Reid, Babyface leading up to their involvement on the Don't Be Cruel album. As well as addressing the speculation surrounding Ralph Tresvant's participation in it's recording.

Anyone who grew up listening to both B Brown & Rizz know how distinctive each of their voices are. Rizz has a very smooth tenor (stronger live), while Bob has a gritty Baritone. While they’re different, they’re also similar. At the time, Rizz & Bob were the closest out of everyone in N.E., with Rizz always looking out for him and protecting him. Side note: Janet Jackson did uncredited background vocals for Rizz’ classic “Sensitivity.” Rizz returned the favor for Janet for “the best things in life are free.”

Respectfully I disagree Charles. Their voices were indistinguishable during their youth. So much so that nobody knew Bobby sung the entire Jealous Girl until seen live. When Mr Telephone man came out we could definitely hear a difference. Around the time the All For Love album was released is when Bob's voice matured away from Ralph's altogether. As far as Ralph's voice being stronger live I surely disagree. If you actually meant stronger than Bob's live. Ralph is a crooner. Bob belted out notes. To even put Rick in the mix Ralph can't compare. 👍🏽 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fseGgtJ4sta4fmw.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7-ZiMSDxrmshnk.html *edit* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nalofpuht5ipiGw.html

So, there doesn't really seem to be a story around this, tbh. One thing I didn't like about the 80s R& B period was the industry's [continuing] penchant for tweaking voices WELL out of their natural sound. Brown ended up sounding like a singing Jackdaw and Trevant a midget child - whereas those brilliant tunes would have sounded even better with a more natural [lower] octave. Nice vid anwyay.

"with Rizz always looking out for him and protecting him [Bobby]," while Bobby was stealing all Rizz's ideas and undermining Rizz to the other members. Let Bobby tell it now, he was closest to Ricky or maybe he said Mike--don't remember--but he definitely did not say Ralph.

What I learned from the NE Story is that Ralph is such a humble dude and would never do try to put himself over at the expense of a band mate. So, if he did record extra vocals for Bobby Brown, he would never admit it. My belief is that he did do extra vocals but the core of the song is Bobby Brown. Realistically, before computers were managing/altering singers voices in the studio, producers would get other singers to do uncredited "extra" vocals" for an artist. It's the artistry of the producer to get the best parts to finish a song and make it unnoticeable.

When I was a kid I heard Ralph in the song anytime I heard it so I thought everyone knew this. Like Michael Jackson doing backup and singing the chorus to Watching You or when Sting ding backups for Phil Collins. Even Prince did back up vocals. True singers don't mind doing back ups if the song's vibe is right to. them

Can you please do 2pac’s 1995 classic album me against the world because he draws lyrical inspiration from his impending prison sentence, troubles with the police, and poverty then he intentionally tried to make the album more personal and reflective than his previous efforts.

Gotta give it to both Ralph and Bobby, the two pioneers of New Edition. Going back in 1984, these two has been on the MCA label with NE then followed onto 1988's Bobby's Don't Be Cruel and into Ralph's 1990 self titled album. After 35 years I never knew Ralph sung background on Bobby's ELS.

Bobby came 1 hour late to his own concert!, but blew our heads back then, was like a electrifying kaotic energy, while Ralph was super smooth, like comparing James Brown to Marvin Gaye, but they both owned 90s RnB...

This happens all the time. Somebody does the demo and producers keep the vocals on there mostly without notification. Interesting fact many of your favorites female RnB songs were mostly demoed by 'Queen of demos' Debra Killings. You can clearly hear here on background vocals everywhere.

It really wasn't and still isn't uncommon for other known artists to do background vocals for other vocalist especially if you were in the same group. It's to bring a new and different element. Luther did it for Cissy Huston, George Michael for Deon Estus Jonny Gill did quite a few background for artists. That's just to name a few.

Ralph sang verse 1 no doubt. It was not just background vocals. Bobby has a raspier tone which you hear distinctly when he comes in on verse 2.

It still very much sounds like Bobby to me tho. I think it’s the voice and pronunciation. The tone sounds more like Ralph but I bet he was just pitched up.

I agree that Verse 1 might be Ralph. When I listen to both verses carefully, the first sounds much more like Ralph’s smooth voice. It was like he was doing his best Bobby impersonation with the pronunciations. He’s a loyal friend and bandmate.

It was a time difference: Bob originally recorded the song at 17 Then the remix came (the more well know version) and he re-recorded the second verse at 19. His voice had matured some more by then. So that’s why it sounds different. But you can hear Ralph on background in both versions though.

Here's what's beautiful about Bobby and Every Little Steps - even Simmons, Teddy and Babyface... They all must have been collaborating or something because ELS sounds a bit like Teddy's Jam. Can you imagine if they had actually made that song with lyrics and gave it to Bobby?

The difference between Bobby and Ralph = BOBBY HAD THAT 'IT FACTOR!' To be sure, Ralph had 100% talent. But Bobby had the same thing that Diana Ross had that set her apart from the Supremes. Of course Florence Ballard had the best vocals hands down, but the most talented person does not always rise to the top. There was and is just something so electrifying about Bobby Brown during his prime! He evoked a visceral reaction from people, something Ralph has never done! No shade on Ralph, IJS!
