Of all his choral works this was his favorite, and rightly so.

This is really lovely music - Vaughan Williams at his best - and the music and words together beautifully bring to life and help to explain the last few chapters of the Book of Revelation (which should be read as well as following the music). Even so come Lord, indeed.

I don't know the painting but "Sancta Civitas" means the Holy City and refers to the New Jerusalem as described in the last chapters of the Book of Revelation so maybe the painting is a depiction of that but frankly it bears no resemblance to the Holy City described in the Bible.
