Ralph Vaughan Williams (1972-1958): Symphony No. 4 in F minor [1931 -34]
I. Allegro 02:50
II. Andante moderato 11:29
III. Scherzo: Allegro molto 21:20
IV. Finale con epilogo fugato: Allegro molto 26:19
BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
Andrew Manze, conductor
"I don't know whether I like it, but it's what I meant." Vaughan Williams referred in these famous words to his Symphony No. 4, which was sketched out over the years 1931 and 1932, completed in 1934, and first performed in London on April 10, 1935, by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. The dissonance and power of the Symphony No. 4 were not new elements in Vaughan Williams' music; some of the same can be heard, for instance, in the ballet Job (1930). But the unrelenting vision of the Fourth was new and surprising.
What does the Fourth mean? Interestingly and not very helpfully, it was the first of Vaughan Williams' symphonies not to have a descriptive title attached to it. Many thought that the symphony was a commentary on world events, in particular the rise of totalitarianism and the eventual outbreak of World War II. Sir Adrian Boult thought so: "He foresaw the whole thing." As usual, Vaughan Williams rejected such specificity, although he did admit in a letter to a friend that the "beauty" of the symphony reflected "unbeautiful times-because we know that beauty can come from unbeautiful things (e.g. King Lear, Rembrandt's School of Anatomy, Wagner's Niebelungs, etc.)" As Vaughan Williams was completing the Fourth, he was also starting on the oratorio Dona Nobis Pacem, which does make direct reference to war. But the composer's widow Ursula saw the symphony as autobiographical, a reflection of her husband's character: "The towering furies of which he was capable, his fire, pride, and strength are all revealed and so are his imagination and lyricism."
The symphony begins with an imperious theme that frequently recurs later in the work. The tone is one of anger and aggression. Even the more restrained second theme has a pulsating energy lurking beneath it, and the movement's occasional moments of humor are acid tinged. After its driving energy and frequent brass outbursts, the quiet coda of the movement comes as a surprise. But the feeling is more of enervation than calm. Next is the slow movement, marked Andante moderato, which opens with a wandering melody related to material from the first movement over a strong pizzicato accompaniment. Much is made of the contrast between the remorseless tread of the accompaniment versus the rather forlorn quality of the melodic material. The movement exudes a sense of weariness. A lonely flute solo acts as a coda. The Scherzo, marked Allegro molto, is dance-like, but rhythmically unpredictable and mercurial. After a fugal interlude, the dance opening returns. A strange and mysterious passage in which a quiet recollection of the first movement's main theme sounds over a pounding drum rhythm, leads without break into the vigorous Finale, which one might see as the resolution of the conflict of the first three movements. The final movement strides purposely forward, with frequent brass eruptions. The mood is one of excitement, but of agitation, as well. A peaceful theme emerges in the strings and is developed for a time. Then the initial music breaks out again, leading into a fugal development that whips up a lot of energy and leads to a brass-drenched peroration derived from the symphony's opening pages.

The range, variety, invention, imagination, and superlative qualiy of VW's music is just staggering. How can he be just a great 20th century English composer? He is a great all time international composer. The symphonies rank him alongside Bruckner and Mahler. It is a pity VW did not record more. His version of this symphony is far more vicious than any other I have heard.

A powerful, strong and committed performance of this symphony by Andrew Manze and his Scottish orchestra. RVW was clearly feeling agitated and disturbed when composing this work. I am equally agitated at KZfaq interrupting a movement to place two adverts right as the orchestra is playing. How ignorant can a tech company get?!

Oh, how I wished the flutist at the end of the second movement had on her own changed that final note to an E (I think that is what it originally was) instead of playing the D (which is what the composer changed it to). The one note revision completely changes the meaning of that second movement, where it ends with some brief measure of hope to an ending of hopelessness and impending doom, which is what you hear in that devastating final movement. If you don't believe me, listen to Vaughan William's own recording of this work or, if you can find it, Leopold Stokowski's live radio performance in 1942 with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, made before the revision.

Great symphony! It's in the programme from the Orquestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais (Brazil) for this year and I came here to check. That opening is insane! The last two movements are my favourites - they are harmonically, polyphonically and rhythmically so rich, the last movement with a majestic fugato structure… I think this is the best work by R. V. Williams I've heard so far, but this encourages me to listen to more of his stuff, which I honestly don't know much of.

The greatest rebel against Beethoven. Tchaikovsky parted the emperor of symphony in his Sixth in B minor, Chausson in his B flat major and Brahms in his 3rd in E flat major. The three composers' works quit Beethoven's model represented in his 5th though the three did not revolt against the big master. They simply parted from LvB's strong style to say what they wanted and could honestly and sincerely. RVW is however courageous enough in using a 4-notes motif which is clearly opposite in character to Beethoven's one and the eerie bridge with timpani's roll and quiet strings leading to the three notes of the main theme of the finale, now again in an opposite direction to Beethoven's theme of victory. I believe RVW was faithful to our time.

This work is not in any way atonal although it is highly dissonant. But the two are not synonymous and a tonal center can be discerned over the entire piece. The dissonance is used in the classic sense of anger and stress, rather than as a modernistic orgy, as a result of which it is more easily listenable for most who cannot tolerate many contemporary trends.

RVW 4 takes one to regions in the soul that only he can visit (the last bars of the opening movement...) I find the opening comments of the BBC commentary problematic - RVW is so often confined to a particular place only ("the most English of English composers" - what does this *mean*?), and this obscures his universal greatness, for he is as powerful and inventive as Sibelius. There is the same problem in commentary on Elgar, whose radical orchestral virtuosity places him alongside Richard Strauss.

In the 20th century, trailblazer RVW broke the vise-like grip of Germanic influence on English music that was prevalent in the music of Elgar by incorporating French impressionistic harmony and the language of English folk song as structural devices into his large scale works. However, RVW's 4th Symphony is his most Germanic with its obvious parallels to Beethoven's 5th starting with both of their openings: Whereas Ludwig's was 'fate knocking on the door,' RVW's is 'fate slamming the door in your face.' It was as if RVW was saying in symphonic form: "OK, I'm angry as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore, so in order to vent my frustrations I'll compose a sneering parody of Teutonic tradition: (1) My scherzo will transition directly into the finale but instead of a joyful triumph, I'll give you a sardonic march starting at 26:19; (2) You like mechanical themes with repeated notes and sequences? Good, I'll give you a fugato on a modern jazz Lydian 7th scale theme the rhythm and shape of which J.S. Bach could have composed at 27:27; and (3) Speaking of the Leipzig Master, you like themes on the musical notes of his name B-A-C-H that translates into English as Bb-A-C-B? Well alright, I'll mess with that by giving you a scherzo theme on Bb-A-Cb-Bb that transitions to the finale at 26:11 and then grind it out in great dissonance with a fugato at the beginning of my finale's coda at 32:10. Bookends in Bb-A-Cb-Bb, you see. Now that I have demonstrated the requisite proficiency in your time-honored techniques, I will return to my original mission in Albion for the remainder of my symphonic oeuvre. Thank you and don't take it personally, but I wish we could have avoided that upcoming war, as well as the first one. Love, Raef."
