Yes - I've started listening to u-tube music recently, & I'm appreciating RVW even more than before . There is so much lovely music to hear . I could just sit and listen to RVW and so many others in so many fields of music forever . How can one put into words how incredible is the ability of so many musicians. So beautiful .

@@TheProsaicCult Maybe in Britain he isn't underrated, but outside of the UK his music is played way less often than it should be. Unfortunately for me. (I don't live in the UK)

I have adored this music since the '70s. I remember hearing it while on my first date with my spouse of over 40 years! I wish I could have seen the performance of this work way back when. Oddly, the final movement sounds like it is derived from some sea chantey.

When I was a 16-year-old cellist back in 1971, I attended Symphony School of America in Wisconsin USA, a summer music camp. This was the very first piece we read through at our first rehearsal. I have loved it ever since.

True. Most have forgotten that he studied under Maurice. I just listened to daphnis and Chloe followed by a few selections from Miroirs (e.g., Oiseaux tristes), and was pleased by your apt comment.

Adrian Boult and RFW met as young men at Oxford and became lifelong friends. Boult and RFW often discussed the music as it was being composed and at rehearsals before the public ever heard a note. No one knew RFW’s intentions better than Boult.

It is so good to hear the whole of The Wasps. The overture is often broadcast, but not the rest - which I have not heard for years (and I cannot play my old LP any longer). Items 2 to 5 deserve to be heard.

"A wasp is a bee without a job!" (Milton Jones comedy) This was one of my late husband's favourite pieces of music. It is beautifully and dramatically crafted, but Tom always said the slow and peaceful middle bit always reminded him of a theme from a Hollywood western! I so miss him and his quips.

No conductor has ever performed the British repertoire better than Sir Adrian Boult - and we are indeed fortunate that he lived into the stereo era to make these fine recordings with the London Philharmonic. There is also fine posting of all the Vaughan Williams symphonies on KZfaq conducted by Boult - not to be missed! Thanks for posting!

I've always found this suite most fascinating in the various forshaddowings of his "A Sea Symphony" which was to follow this work within 4 years.

In August of 2015 I was clearing out bushes at my brother's house and was stung by two wasps; one sting each on the top of each hand at the same time (I was not wearing gloves.) . There was a small nest in there and I never even saw it. Later that night we returned with a flashlight and a full can of Ortho bee/nest killer and completely drenched the nest in seconds, and continued to do so after it fell to the ground. We could see them crawling out but the jet spray and toxicity of the chemical was too much for them, as not ONE wasp got away. Love RVW by the way.

RVW's works use and evoke the full palette of emotions, but his Aristophanic Suite never fails to cheer me. Sir Adrian Boult and the LSO show how it's done.

Adrian Boult's recording of this music is probably the best - and how nice to hear all of it, rather than just the overture, brilliant though that is.

I hadn't heard the complete concert suite for many years, so it was a joy to re-visit it. I've often wondered about the significance of the March Past of the Kitchen Utensils and what connection its title has with the play.

Wondered about that myself. Utensils are called upon as "witnesses" at a trial involving dogs (you read that right) in one scene from ONE translation into English of the play. I don't doubt that all concerned were portrayed by people. I should re-read the play in its entirety.

If you evaluate the mentality of a period trough its music, then people of 1909 had a greater hope in the future and were happier than us...Decided rythms, Colorfull orchestra , fresh major feeling.

Interesting comment. The Edwardian era witnessed many new inventions and technology. Also, the British Empire was most likely at its height then (not fashionable to say that now, but true nonetheless). The Great War was still in the distance and there was feeling of great optimism as you noted.

pointreyes6. Well said. RVW also served as an ambulance driver during WW1 - too old for trench warfare though very close to it. Britten, as I remember served his country during WW2 in the USA.

I agree with thombotomb and can appreciate Britten and RVW in their own ways. Anyway, _de gustibus non est disputandum_ ... Some of the opening passages in the overture remind me strongly of Walton's dramatic 'Battle of Britain' film music where, in similar vein, he conjures up the buzzing of aircraft about the skies.

Vernon wanted to use an energy beam to detect signals from extraterrestrial civilization Pym decline but was attracted to Janet who reminded him of his late wife Maria. Van Dyne went ahead with his experiment but a criminal from the Kosmosian race tracked Van Dynes'beam to Earth 🌎 and murdered him. Janet told Pym she was determined to bring her father's killer to justice Pym revealed his dual identity as Ant 🐜 Man and offered to grant her superhuman abilities and make her his crimefighting partner Janet agreed and became the Wasp. Wasps are among the meanest creatures to find on this planet (notably after humans of course). Just look up what an Ichneumonidae, an Emerald cockroach wasp, (etc), does to reproduce...

Wasps aren't depicted as nice. Honey bees are better. Sounds good.in the cartoon movie, Tall tales a magical garden Antoine Krings.Wendy the wasp is evil, she takes over the hive and drains the garden's resources. Also threaten to take the bee's children🐝
