Maui. Ram Dass live webstream. Ram Dass and Shivaya speak about Maharaji's teachings. Ram Dass was wowed by Maharaji's siddhis or miracles and didn't see the love at first. When Ram Dass first came to him, he read his mind. As a psychologist, it blew his mind. He didn't want anyone to be able to read his mind, because there were things he didn't want anyone to know. But Maharaji looked at him with uncondtional love. Shivaya never got the sweet words or kindness that others got. But he still felt the love. His method was abuse and that was loving. He loved everyone, including soldiers and military. Everyone felt that he knew them intimately. Maharaji said that if anyone thinks about him, he is there with you.

Ram Dass was talking about Maharaji being with him all the time, and right behind him Hanuman was smiling sweetly and looking at him as if He was intently listening to every word.

Who was Neem Karoli Baba? So little seems to be known about him. Is he an avatar, a saint, a manifestation of Hanuman, a misunderstood eccentric or schizophrenic? Christians would say he is demonic, his powers were from Satan and he is in hell now yet according to Ram Dass he's still floating round in spirit helping devotees. I'm so confused, I used to pray to him but now don't know what to make of him at all.

Some of what you say is perfectly true. If Christ came back it is very likely that most people would reject and demonise him. And at times Christianity has certainly been used to control. However, this teaching that man is divine seems to me to be flawed and Ram Dass pushes this view a lot. I mean, if we're all gods and goddesses, how come most of us can't seem to sort out our lives and get our shit together?

Syd's Lantern Good question, the most common one from beginners. It's also easily answered well in Hinduism. An equivalent question to the 'religions' (Christianity etc) would be - 'if there's God like the one they propose - kind, loving, all powerful etc - why does he allow suffering? But before that, I'd like to inform you that this 'teaching' that Ram Dass talks about is one of the Hindu spiritual philosophies called Advaita (non-dualism)! Infact, this is the one that the 'enlightened' beings, sages in India talked about through their experiences over several thousands of years. This is what is discussed, in ancient philosophical texts called Vedanta (concluding part of Vedas). Now, your question is a valid one and the most common one among the beginners of Hindu philosophy or spiritual seekers (both are the same thing as against religion followers). That's the first step. In fact, questioning (as against blindly believing) is the first step of spiritual journey. If you are really interested in pursuing it further explore more from so called 'Hinduism'! Your question is easily answered in many different ways. But may require Hinduism-101 as a pre-req. Meaning, even the basic concepts of God, universe, heaven/hell etc would need correction which the 'religions' of the world haven't got right. They teach primitive man's beliefs that are only dark age thinking. "A super power that judges and allocates eternal heaven/hell"! Anyway, questioning is good, is desired, is considered necessary in Hinduism. So keep doing that. Ask a million, and look for answers with an open mind. Explore hindu phil. You'll find answers or guidance on how to find them for all your questions i suppose. Best wishes on your seeking.

Many thanks for the reply. Yes, I've read a lot about Hinduism and other eastern religions and have listened to Ram Dass's "Here We All Are" where he tells his story probably hundreds of times, usually while tripping.:) I find much of what he says is actually incredibly helpful and a lot of Hinduism and Buddhism I really resonate with. His claim that we are all God bothers me though. I used to agree with this wholeheartedly but after listening to many Christian sermons and lectures I now wonder why Ram Dass hasn't yet offered a response or rebuttal to the idea that this is basically what Lucifer said to Eve in the garden. That we shall "be as gods" or whatever it was that Satan said. I don't know. Maybe he has talked about this in one of his more recent teachings. I have yet to hear him address this concept though and I've listened to almost all of his stuff. I mean, in our modern "rational, enlightened" age we laugh at such a story but what if there's actually some truth to it?

Syd's Lantern A Hindu (or a spiritual seeker) would normally never go out to rebut anybody's religious beliefs or push his/her own. No concept of evangelizing or missions in any form exists in Hinduism. The simple reason for that is the foundational principle that there could be many ways of seeking the same goal, and to each his own. It is seeking after all. "I'll walk my path and let others follow whatever works for them". You are not doomed to eternal hell-fire if you don't accept my God, or any God, or don't follow my way. Because there is no 'my' God or 'your' God. There's just God (or no God, but don't go into it yet) in different forms and names. You can now see the reason why the concept of 'conversion' or 'apostacy' is not technically possible in Hinduism. From an absolute stand point everyone is a Hindu following his/her own path except if they believe that only my way and my God are true and everyone else must be converted or killed, or they are condemned to hell. A Hindu spiritual seeker may, however, like to share about his/her experiences with others and even advise those who come to seek their guidance. They may also celebrate their progress and like to help others who are open to it. But this is like an enthusiastic traveler sharing his/her experiences with others, and sometimes recommending friends to visit those places. The second thing I would like to say is, you need to develop a little more trust in people as far as these matters are concerned. Don't be too gullible but a little more trusting. Hope you understand now that Hindus have no motivation to 'convert' anyone. So why would a decent person lie about these things. Why would Ram Dass lie about these stories? And he's not an uneducated simpleton who can be fooled by some magic tricks. He's been a scientist himself that too in the field of consciousness. So, there's definitely something to these stories. Same goes for so many others who share such experiences. The last thing is, listen to them, take directions, go at your own pace, ask questions, take guidance, but as they say in Hinduism no body can show it to you. You'll know only when you experience 'it' yourself. But until you reach that point, you can take the help of such people to guide you through the way.

I find it a bit ludicrous whenever I see westerners' enthusiasm over this baja/peti, the pump organ, as if it was germane to the Indian spirituality when in truth it was imported by christian missionaries and the slavation army from england into India, lol.

so much confusion about things like this exist due to the two invasions, even in India this isn't limited to just westerners, many Indians have their own confusions that they're often not even aware of - regarding the long term effects of both the Mughal & English conquests of India on the evolution of Indian culture... considering you are actually talking about the dismal long lasting effects of war... I do agree that this is a very relevant point conceptually in general, but to really understand these workings, look to history and the universal "we" within yourself in love, because you do have a point but this flame does not need to be fed, its not as simple as an "lol"... (and i'm a biracial Indian, not a "western enthusiast"). Love & ॐ.

As regards the relevant conceptual point, it appears that westerners generally fall for a fundamental mistake of grasping onto the Indian shadows in Plato's cave, just because they heard that some Indians escaped their cave. What they have to realize is that it is _their own_ cave that they have _to leave_, _not enter_ someone else's. The "lol" here refers to the ludicrous way that half-educated westerners adopt mistakes unthinkingly and indeed proudly hold them dear as if they were the token of authenticity. And it seems to me as if I can reckon on your agreement there. In no way does it suggest that history would be a simple matter, whether objectively or subjectively. The war, BTW, was not a colonialist invention, since the Dravidian population certainly didn't volunteer to end up as Paraiyar. So it took them a long time to subvert the indogermanic sky gods (such as Dyaus = Zeus of whom we don't get to hear so much today, even though Indra is still remotely known) with their Ganesha and Shiva and their tantric stuff.

I appreciate the intelligence of this conversation, truly, and do hope that my approach is in no way offensive to you, and your Plato's cave reference has a very obvious and interesting point. I might have a bit of a unique perspective due to my biracial heritage - which means indeed that I'm not a combination of anything, but the two come together to form one. My perspective is simply what I already am... There is a deeper reality to having this conversation on the comment section of this particular video. Shiva also means that this very struggle of the topic we're discussing is also maya, the illusion, and though it is an illusion to a love we're all trying to reach the illusion by no means is anything negative... it's just our experience of it. I mean... what did you think to find here? Indians do indeed have a lot of waking up to do... and so do we all in whether these topics are of the rational or irrational mind, you're coming onto this comment section as I am, and we're both doing this for our own ego-centric reasons pretending to know what other people should do while the only thing any of us can truly confirm is our own consciousness and the road each of us need to take as individuals. And yes... for that reason... I'm just saying... love & ॐ... to you too! ;)

Soteriologe Living in your small well, and believing it's the whole world? Only talking from your very limited and colored version of information! That's definitely typical Western thing (of the 17th- half of 20th century)!. Going as 'far' back to Plato! That's as far as you can go with your infinitesimally small information, which you seem to revel in! And why not when the world was 'created' in 4000 BC, according to some wise people, you might believe in, isn't it! On the Indians' 'awareness' scale of thousands/millions of years, Plato is not even a millisecond old kid, who was still more fascinated with thinking about the outside /material world, barely even looking towards the real stuff, let alone scratch it! I wish you the best living in your well!
