They had a debate. And it was said, Raju Hirani is the most Versatile filmmaker. Hell NO. Look at Ram Gopal Varma films. He has made a Musical, Gangsta Flicks, Horror Films, Murder Mystery, Thrillers, Road Trip Noir Films, Drama, Political Flicks. He has bloody done it all. He has saved Bollywood from the NRI Catering Dharma and YRF. He has given a certain identity to the Indian Film Industry. Love Him or Hate Him, For me Ram Gopal Varma is the most versatile Filmmaker of Indian Film Industry.

I'd really like to meet people who think Hirani is versatile. I mean, he's good and has a great ear for comedy. But, every film is an execution of the same formula. A disapproving father, a side-kick who looks up to the hero, having a keyword (jadoo ki jhappi, wrong number, all is well, gandhigiri), fixing an establishment through a hero who does not belong there. Basically, fun and enjoyable, but definitely formulaic. Also, I really really like RGV, but I'd say his film-making is quite formulaic too, that way. I get that it's your personal opinion, but if it's about versatility, it has to be Mani Ratnam, Anurag Kashyap, Geetu Mohandas, Kamal Hassan or someone like that. These guys literally change their film-making styles, lighting, storytelling, music and so much more with every film.

Rgv is one of the few filmmakers who made a classic musical ( Rangeela) 2 epic gangster dramas(Satya and company) classic horror flicks(Raat and bhoot) epic suspense flick(koun) and a good Political drama (Sarkar) ..even his not so successful attempts like jungle, mast , the attack of 26/11 are damn watchable.Another thing which rgv had a knack for was giving out films with great music Satya, company (khallas and tumse Kitna pyaar hai) mast, pyaar tune kya Kiya, Naach( a very under rated Rgpv film) Additionally Ramu is also someone who has made 3 hit songless films (bhoot, ratri,Sarkar) add an above average koun and Lo that's a distinction no other Indian filmmaker has.

He transformed Ajay Devgun's image also. Before "Company", the movies he was doing were b-grade movies like Platform and some other movies where he performed some cheap third class acts like standing on moving motor-cycle and so on. But after Company Bollywood pigs caught on to the lesson as to how he should be portrayed and what he suits best for. Because we all know people cry when Ajay Devgun does comedy or dance.

And in 1999 hum dil de chuke sanam and criminally underrated takshak with Tabu, Amrish Puri sir, and psychopathic portrayal of Rahul Bose opened zone for ajay Devgan to try other genre. A fresh & honest interview. You can see the passion in Ramu. Ramu is a path breaker & true Outlier, though he seems to have lost his way recently. I have loved his movies, design & talent he has given. Rangeela is a bigger movie, DDLJ overshadowed releasing in a small gap. A curious case just like The Shawshank Redemption being overshadowed by Forrest Gump. I have loved Shiva, Raat, Rangeela, Satya, Company, Sarkar & so so many more. Bounce back & bounce back hard Ramu, Bollywood is too bogus & dull without you.

The director who had lost his Midas touch.... A career graph which declined as steeply after 2000s.... As steeply as Rajamouli's rise.... Hope he bounces back, but chances are less as he has exhausted all his ideas.... His ideas and genres seemed fresh for mid 90s to early 2000s as those were new to Indian cinema at that time and Indians were not exposed to world cinema and content.... But after 2000s there are lots of youngsters and other directors who are making more technically sound output in smaller budgets in all these genres.... Ramu never adapted with time, nor has patience to deliver a product with technical finesse....

Anupama, these last few days I’ve been watching Film Companion obsessively, thanks to you showcasing Malayalam talent that no one, north of Kerala, has ever bothered to do. With this interview, 2 things are clear - 1) You are a true blue film buff/nerd and the joy in you, when talking films with filmmakers, is infectious! I rarely see such connection (and preparedness) in interviews. 2) I had forgotten what Ramu was all about. And sadly I had also bought into the media narrative of his arrogance and how he’s a “has been”. I’m thankful to you for showcasing what a gifted filmmaker RGV is. I firmly believe he’s a national treasure and has so much to give. Thank you for reminding us of that! Lastly, I have a suggestion - Ramu deserves a few more interviews with you - there’s Shiva, Satya and Company. And numerous others! I know a lot has already been discussed on these movies but I bet you can bring out a unique perspective and more nuggets that others wouldn’t have.....I mean who would have ever known that Rahman goofed off his time in Goa watching TV and Manish Malhotra and Ahmed Khan would have been unknowns, had it not been for Ramu and his impulsive ways! And the Steven Kapoor reveal is priceless 😄

Watched Satya just the other day on KZfaq again after many years and mahn what a film! Just as impactful now as it was at the time of its release. The watertight script, the impeccable performance of every actor who actually lived their respective roles, the cinematography capturing Mumbai in all its gritty and grimy glory, the color scheme and tone of the film. The out of the world soundtrack by Vishal Bharadwaj which did not at all feel out of place in the movie. And of course, the pathbeaking bgm by Sandeep Chowta. Everything was just PERFECT! That's the glory I want Ramu to regain.

And next film Mast. Ramu made Sandeep Chowta debut as a music director in Mast. And Sandeep's sound was very close to Rahman's. When I heard the title song of Mast from an audio shop, I thought it is Rahman. The blasting music, orchestration- all had a Rahman flavor to it. Sandeep continued to work with Ramu for so many movies - Jungle, Prema Kadha, Pyar Tune Kya Kiya, Road, Rakthacharitra(bgm) etc. Rahman did only two movies for Ramu but those two movie music were legendary. Everytime people talk of Rangeela, they talk of Aamir Khan's tapori lingo, Rahman's groundbreaking music and Urmila's gorgeousness, but seldom do we see people discuss how endearing the character of Jackie Shroff was. He could have nailed the role of Munna, given his real-life ruggedness and ruffian demeanour but for RGV to give him such a nuanced role was nothing but sheer genius!

Jackie Shroff's performance was very subtle. It was all in the eyes. He could have done Munna's role in his sleep. Even now he's the first consideration when it comes to an veteran gangster role -for eg: he was mentor to Vikrant Massey on Criminal Justice on Hotstar or the short film Shunyata or even Aranya Kandam.

Interestingly, in 1995 Aamir deserved the Best Actor Filmfare for Rangeela. But SRK won it for DDLJ and the film in general swept almost all categories. Despite Rangeela being more avant-garde and MTV styled in nature. 3 years later too, it was Kuch Kuch Hota Hain which deprived RGV's Satya of its rightful prize and Satya was given some Critics' Award to pacify the film aficionados. But just goes to prove how much the Khan-Chopra-Johar lobby holds sway in the industry and deprives someone their rightful accolades.

RGV is the fountainhead of new age parallel Indian cinema - Hansal Mehta. Everything you think you know about Bollywood 'if you are unaware of Ram Gopal Varma' is wrong. - Garry Hendrix In an industry best known for its song-and-dance extravaganzas, Varma has become Bollywood’s biggest director with crime flicks and horror movies devoid of flashy production numbers. If no big stars are available, he takes second-tier talent or a fresh face plucked off the streets. More often than not he gets a career-making performance out of them.
