Lyrics:
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Black Betty had a child (Bam-ba-Lam)
The damn thing gone wild (Bam-ba-Lam)
She said, "I'm worryin' outta mind" (Bam-ba-Lam)
The damn thing gone blind (Bam-ba-Lam)
I said "Oh, Black Betty" (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Oh, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
She really gets me high (Bam-ba-Lam)
You know that's no lie (Bam-ba-Lam)
She's so rock steady (Bam-ba-Lam)
And she's always ready (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
She's from Birmingham (Bam-ba-Lam)
Way down in Alabam' (Bam-ba-Lam)
Well, she's shakin' that thing (Bam-ba-Lam)
Boy, she makes me sing (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Betty (Bam-ba-Lam)
Whoa, Black Betty
Bam-ba-lam

The station I was listening to when this came out didn't play it, so I only heard it on American Top 40, which of course played the abbreviated version. It always seemed to me that the song never really got started. Years later, I have SiriusXM and finally heard the full version (on either Classic Rewind or Classic Vinyl) and finally it made sense. Never understood the radio edit, the full song isn't that long, and 4 minute-ish songs were being played all the time by then.

Back in the early 80's when I was in high school a local guy several years older than me and my running buddies had a black 1965 Mustang coupe with Old Black Betty painted across the edge of the deck lid where the lock and Mustang letters were. The car had a built 289 with a dual quad set-up best I can remember,4-speed and I think it had 3.90 or 4.11 gears under it. He had aluminum slotted E-T wheels with skinny black walls on front and Mickey Thompson N-50's on the rear. Stan was a pretty cool guy. He'd give us a cold beer or two if we helped him clean and polish the car for weekend cruising. He died several years ago in his mid-50 of a heart attack. It shocked us all. He didn't look like he had a health problem in the world. His son (and only child) has Black Betty now. He brings it out a few times a year to shows and what not but he's adamant it'll never be for sale. R.I.P Stan.

the whole song is like a bar fight, indeed 0:01 - brawl start - one guy insult another one, they start shouting at each other, then a fist fight. 1:32 - brawl intensify, more guys enter the fight, the place turns into mayhem and chaos 1:59 - now everybody is fighting everybody else, guys are flying all over the place, landing on tables, crushing them, with pints and billard balls flying in every corner

Where the wild, Speedy bass part goes. Does any one knows why? DId they hired a different bassist to tape the song that's on the actual récord? the band's bass player can't play it ay all? Ram Jam fulfilled a dream of mine. I always hoped that one day a band like this would just show up unannounced someplace I was and play. It was the spring of 1980 at the university of Marathon county in Wausau Wisconsin (a small two year extension college of around 900 students. The local band that was playing and announced they were going to have some friends of theirs fill in while they took a long break. Then Ram Jam took the stage. They said they were traveling through town and just had a hankering to play. They played for an hour or so. It was just so awesome.

The real story's more insane: it's the same take - in fact, this entire song is a dance edit of an independent single by Starstruck, focusing less on the progressive Southern Rock groove and more on the notable riffs, commissioned by the Ohio Express/1910 Fruitgum producers when they decided to sign the Starstruck guitarist and form a new hard rock band around the Starstruck guitarist, ultimately treating the project more as an update of the bubblegum prefab-band scene than the organicness of a hard rock band.
@Malkmusianful
@Malkmusianful 27 күн бұрын
That's why the edits are so weird - they're not meant to fit together in that song. They're there to replicate the precise bubblegum formula in a hard rock context.

Nobody probably remembers this but there was a cable series called Lucky, with John Corbett playing the lead character(IIRC, his nickname was Lucky, hence the series name). Basically it was about a gambler in Las Vegas and his rise back up to the top after a good run of bad luck dragged him all the way down to rock bottom. This song was featured in the series and at the time I was spending a lot of time at the Windsor Casinos Carribean Stud Poker tables. Every time I hear this jam I have a flashback to being young, reckless and without a care on the world, a time in my life when ignorance truly was blissful!
