That is EXACTLY why I'm doing this. To a tee. I've been on the victim end of that many times, and I don't like it.

I made a followup video. Runs great, does the job but has noticeably less power than the 3.6. Mileage is basically the same, unfortunately. We are working on the opposite now - a way to get just a little more power out of the stock engine. My feeling is it would downshift less, and be a little more pleasant with maybe 30-40 more ft/lbs.

Before you go off half cocked (or fully cocked!) you need a rock solid diagnosis. That would be a leakdown test. With #5 at TDC, put some compressed air in and see where it comes out. Intake, exhaust pipe, or dipstick tube. If its the dipstick, you’re done for. If it’s valve timing, 100% confirmation can be had with the valve cover off. Gouged cam, or bad lifters. If not cam related, you’ll be doing a head. They come from chrysler assembled with new valves and spring for only $450 or so. You reuse your old cams and assorted valvetrain. The rear head (#5 is rear) is a big job but very doable with the engine still in the van. As a cost thing, it may make more sense to replace the engine, but it would depend. What probably wont work a traditional rebuild. The parts and labor to rebuild are likely to exceed a used engine, which is $1900 currently for a tested 100,000 mile engine.

Ha Ha, love the response and very much appreciated,gotta be at least half cocked for the ladies ya know. I have maybe too cheap of a leak down tester coming from the amazonians. Let’s hope quality is enough for this cylinder 5 test . Cylinder 3 is at about 140 psi. Should make wind outta one of the areas that you mentioned. Not quite convinced I will be able to remove that rear head without pulling the motor forward a couple feet. That darn engine cover has to come off the pulley side for that rear head. It would be gravy it I was dealing with 2,4,6. Back at ya with my leaky results just like in the men’s room, that leak is getting old.

The 118” would be a prime candidate. I have a video on that model. It doest weight all that much less than a 136”, but as you mention the frontal area is a big deal. Owners of those vans report perhaps 1 to 2 mpg better than a 136. The height makes a bigger difference, I think. I know this because Volenz owners (with a 3” sleeper above the cab) report mileage closer to 13 or 14 mpg. As a tidbit, I own both 136 and 159 high roofs. The longer van gets ever so slightly better mpg. Less than .5mpg, but every little bit helps.

I’ve never installed them, but this was much discussed over the years on promasterforum. The consensus is that air tabs on a van dont increase mileage, but they do increase stability. Makes sense. As to the 3.2, the data shows that the mpg is basically identical to the 3.6. There is noticeably less power though, and that in turn means more downshifting on hills and under heavy load. I think it would be ok in certain applications or with lighter vans. But without an mpg benefit, I wouldnt recommend a 3.2 swap to a customer. The only advantage then is the buying cost of the engine. I was going to do a second 3.2 swap, and bought an engine with under 90k for a whopping $300. Crazy cheap.

Correct! It's just a failure of shops to give a crap. Need a promaster engine, search for a promaster engine, pay literally 6 times as much. It's not your money, it's the customer's. This particular swap is not really in that category. I had zero idea that it would work. In fact, I expected it not to.

Going on two years. I have update videos on it. So far neither an oil cooler leak nor the tick, but those parts are identical so who knows.

22-up have the gen 3 pentastar. Lots of stuff unchanged, but lots of new stuff. Variable valve lift, egr, different intake. Engines are not forward or reverse compatible because of all those changes.

It's all in this video, but the short of it is you should be looking for an engine from a 2016 Journey. That will pull up all the journeys, minivans, and a few others that fit. The only things you'll need to swap over from your old engine are the upper engine mount pad that bolts to the block, and the dipstick tube and dipstick (though the journey dipstick tube and stick will work, it'll just be harder to reach). The video shows you how to find it, and how much you should pay.

Yes, and even better they made exactly zero changes to the engine from 2014-2022. Means parts are cheaper and more available and nothing to get confused about. While it worked and it was fun, I think the 3.2 swap was a failure. Noticably less power, same mpg, and the only real advantage is the buy-in cost of the 3.2. I saved $1500 buying the engine, but $1500 over 200k or 300k miles is negligible. But if you must know, 2014-2021 promasters are all identical down to the last nut and bolt. The 3.2 came out of a 2015 cherokee. Makes me think; a 3.6 in a cherokee would be a cool hop up!

Yes, with the exception of the dipstick. Identical and interchangeable. Journey, minivans, 200, and maybe some others.

Engines from a 14-18 journey are direct seaps, with the only difference being the dipstick and dipstick tube length.

Not sure if I understand the question. We used the valve covers that came with the 3.2 engine, though I believe they are identical with the 3.6.

Hate to say it, but you aren't going to like my answer. As great as the gasser is, the diesel is the opposite. Expensive, unreliable, and nobody knows how to work on them, including me. I have to turn them away from the shop, and it pains me. If he goes to a dealer, they will lift $14,000 or more off of him for a new engine, which will fail in short order. He'd be better off spending that money on a used gas van and moving his conversion stuff to it. Yes, I believe so. Both the LX cars have the Gen 2 pentastar, meaning they dont have EGR. A way to tell would be the valve covers, and if they spec the same 5w-20 oil as the promaster on the fill cap. Assuming they are, you’d need to use your promaster front engine cover, upper intake, and possibly valve covers. But the basic engine is the same and interchangeable.

The same engine should be found in 2011-up minivans, most Jeeps, and the Lancia Thema I think. There’s also a Maserati variant that could be made to work, I think.

@@promastersonly1419 thank you very much for the reply. I forgot to mention in my first post that my 3.6 awd is a 2016 model. In photos they look exactly the same except the bottom part of the engine. I feel that if I change the pan it fits

I don't really work on the diesel, and while swapping an engine isn't all that complicated, I'm not really the guy for you since I have almost no experience with them. I can make 3 recommendations for shops that would be better suited. One in Florida, one in Georgia, and one in Chicago. No idea what something like that would cost. Sorry.

I have follow up videos on this swap. Basically, this was an experiment. Power is less, mileage is the same, so the only advantage is the cost of the used engine. Labor is identical. We charge a flat $2700 for labor, but that includes a lot of extras. Figure labor at 20hours total.

The only part you’ll need to buy is a new dipstick tube. It’s longer on the promaster, and you’ll break your old one trying to get it out. Other parts you’ll use from your old engine are engine mount pad, and a bracket for the alrernator and a/c compressor, and fuel rail.

Not a chance. Promaster is a front wheel drive platform.

The motor could be installed, but it would be very difficult to make the computer work. And you would need another transmission and a computer to control it. Complicated.

I put it in a subsequent video. Basically, negative. Noticeably less power, same fuel economy. So the only win is the cost of the engine. I have a complete, low miles 3.2 that I got for $280 and stuck on the shelf, and may put it in a short wheelbase van someday. But until then, stick with the 3.6.

Only the 3.2 from the Cherokee is a direct swap. There is a 3.0 version but it's Europe only or China only. I don't know much about it.

We use a ThinkTool Pro S. It's slick, but it doesn't do much that a scanner costing much less does. In the new year I'm looking to upgrade to the factory Chrysler system, which is called WiTech. Expensive, but worth it for what we do.

No. As a FWD mopar, only the 62TE will fit or work. They are to be found in minivan, some Aspens, 200, Journey, Routan, and Promaster. Any non-Promaster trans swap will require the Promaster diff and final gear assembly be swapped over. But otherwise, all the 62TE are generic and will work.

@@MrWhite-fo3es refering to a cherokee trans? The jeep is rwd and promaster is fwd. Aint gonna swap. Refering to the 3.2 engine swap, I dont recommend it. It works, but with less power and the same mpg. Only advantage is the cheapness of the 3.2, but I prefer the 3.6 power.

@@promastersonly1419 what about the 62te swap from the other vehicles. It's like double the price for a promaster. How hard would it be to get one from a mini van or others to work with the promaster?

@@MrWhite-fo3es Great question. Any 62TE 2007 up will work, provided you swap your genuine promaster differential onto the back of it. I haven't done it personally, but the diff is like 4 bolts and easy to do. The reason is the final gear ratio is unique to the Promaster. That's why they are so expensive at junkyards - yards sell them complete with the diff. I know one guy who just plopped a complete minivan transmission in and it worked, but I'm skeptical that it would work well because the computer expects to see a certain wheelspeed that matches the trans output speed, but a trans with a different gear should make it throw all kinds of transmission codes. Also, with the gear in the minivan the Promaster would be turning something like 500rpm less at 60mph. This would help mpg, but the engine would be lugging and downshifting all the time. But, no other internal parts to the transmission are different between a Promaster or a minivan or Journey that I can find, other than the diff.

Posted on FB also. The "weak" transmission is a problem of misdiagnosis and dishonesty. Coming up on two million miles on my vans - haven't lost a transmission yet. There will be a mega video on this topic in the near future.

@promastersonly1419 question. I have a 2013 ram 🐏 v6 3.6 would a caravan or journey or avenger motor fit ? I took hour reaching but nobody has done it.

@@S2kkilla To the best of my knowledge it will fit and work fine with the exception of the oil filter housing, which was changed slightly for 2014 and uses a different oil filter from the 2013. Otherwise, I’m 95% sure it’s all the same, and anything that wasnt would just come over from you promaster engine.
