It's tricky to deal with a lack of motivation to paint. I know the feeling all too well, so I thought we'd sit and talk about it a bit today.

Hello matey, have been medically retired and thought I would be painting until the sun went down...wrong nothing, even tried putting up shelving and tidying up, again wrong!! Have just finished fasting over Ramadan (that does take motivation, but a different kind) and you come along and tell me a similar thing, as something of an inspirational character for me you often come out with the very thing I need to hear. From an old grumpy git who's been in the hobby since the early 70's thank you for being just you.

Thank you for again speaking openly about mental health ... motivation and depression will be forever linked .... what you suggest is what I practice, clearing the work space, having a bloody good tidy up then picking a project to work on.... having an organised work space can help organising the mind allowing some focus ..... if the strategy works then when real life becomes an issue put it in to practice... to everyone who has mental health good luck!

One thing I will add is evaluate yourself. What usually works in getting you to do things can also work in motivating you to paint. Find that out first and then do that when it comes to painting. For me I respond well when I tell myself "I have to do this". When I treat it like work or chores and stop procrastinating I get it done. It sounds counter productive and "not fun" as a hobby, but once I get myself into gear I DO enjoy it! I just need to get that push and removing the option of "I dont want to" is what gets me motivated. Forcing duty/responsibility on myself works for me so if you respond that kind of pressure dont feel like making yourself is a bad thing, because it's not. sometimes it's all you need.

This was a lovely video. Motivation works in waves for me. I find it helps if I switch up my project types between home-repair type projects (I built a game table recently), army projects, and individual model projects. Also glad to hear you've shared the load on the community spotlight videos. You seemed well-and-truly buried in submissions. Take whatever time you need for yourself.

I have had a catiphactii Wolf lord conversion on my desk for about a year and suddenly primed it to kill some time in my day and suddenly found myself building upon it so quickly and loving it again and being back to relaxing whilst painting instead of yelling at myself you've got a squad of blood claw that needs doing or your thunderwolves aren't finished yet but I've been non stop since I started, I have a few months break but I'm back and loving it all from killing some time with an old project and prime it sparking my passion into again

Three step process for getting into the Warhammer hobby: 1. Buy all the things. 2. Put them up on your shelf. 3. Go online and constantly complain about how you don’t have time to do anything. It’s that simple.

I'm actually a commission painter who's got a couple commissions going and currently job-hunting. Also having a lot of mental health and a few very significant medical problems, and let me tell you. It's absolutely fine to not want to try hard on your hobby stuff! Your health matters most. If doing simple paint jobs on your minis makes you happy or helps with depression, then those 'lazy' paint jobs are a good thing!! Sometimes I, the commission painter, do very simple paint jobs on my own minis because that's what makes me happy! If it's not on display or part of a contest or something, you're the only one who needs to like it. YOU DO YOU! :)

Also, I get a lot of my motivation by staring blankly at unpainted minis and thinking about them... Or thinking about something totally unrelated.

I have found a few ways to get myself to paint my armies when I lacked the motivation. The first and simplest for me was listening to music as I paint, playing metal music while painting bloodcrushers can be quite thematic. the other thing I found to help me paint was to film it and share it with some friends who have been interested in getting into the hobby (Which I have recently uploaded the blood crusher video onto KZfaq.) And lastly I think telling other people what you want to do really helps. For instance. I bought some more paints at my local gaming store and I told them that I was going to paint a Kastellan robot in the colour scheme of Mysterio the Spiderman villain from the animated series. I found that it helps keep me motivated when you tell someone what your doing.

As always I enjoy listening to your videos. I dont know why, but it really helps me out doing my minis. And to be honest you nailed pretty much the whole life with this video! If whatever bothers you seems to be "unmanageable", take your time. And like you said, by taking your time it does not need to be time for the direct confrontation of problems (except bills, they are nasty little buggers, always cuts into the 40k savings....) Take a "walk", get to a space where you can breath freely. I am back from a 18 year break from 40k. So anyone who spends time reading this: you have more time to breath than you can imagine! Thank you for just being you! And thank you for all your content! Also dont worry about the things you havent done yet, take a step back, breath, and do it when you are ready. This is not a competition, this is YOUR very own stuff. And you are great at it!

I have a large collection of gray plastic shame. I have definitely felt the pressure and had paranoia-like thoughts such as, "By the time I get such and such army finished, they will have a new codex and some of the units will be invalidated." I have learned to not stress about it and also learned to not overextend myself. I find making lists to be helpful. I list each unit in my army that needs painting. As I complete each unit I check it off the list. It helps me by giving me a sense of accomplishment. Unless you have a deadline (like a painting or wargaming competition or you are a commission painter) I would say take your time and get done what you feel like getting done. Stressing about it will only make it unenjoyable and delay the process even more. The wargaming community is strong and will continue to support you Kiri. Your content continues to improve and always serves to both inform and inspire me and many others. Keep your head up mate, you're doin' great work!

Mental health first dude, it’s THE most important thing. Interestingly I just watched your video from Last year about depression., sat there nodding and going “know all about that!” Being open about it is massive and important, keep it up. A great many of us are going through the same thing. As for Hobby funk, I found the best way was as you said, put most away and try to focus on just one project, or a small part of one project. In the depths of a depressive episode two years ago, as part of cognitive therapy, I set myself the goal of one mini a week. This grew to a squad, and after a month of this I decided to try finish my Night Lords that I had been collecting since 1996.... I gave myself till the end of the year and they only had to be at a tabletop standard that I was happy with, no decals etc, just colours, a wash and basing. I completed the task with two days to spare AND managed to knock out an extra vehicle. Another trick I’ve come to use is just finding a mini that you think would be fun to do. Regardless of wether it’s actually for any army you might have. Painting something purely for the joy of it makes a difference to just tanking through for completions sake. I have a box of heroquest minis that I dive into for quick fun painting when I need it ( gets them painted too, another project 😅) Long post. Sorry. Kia kaha

Thanks for this vid Kirioth, you're an amazing, genuine guy and I appreciate your content! I've been struggling with this same thing. I habe pretty bad bouts of depression, but I manage it alright, and I managed to keep up to date with the hobby. Up until a few months ago, I only has one army, the imperial guard, and I would always buy something, build it, and paint it. Then I decided to start an AoS army, the fyreslayers....whoops. now I feel like I have SO much to do, and it's hard to even think about where to start. Something I habe to tell myself is that it's just a hobby, it's supposed to be fun! Anyways, thanks for talking about this and being frank, keep up the great work bud!

100% relatable. What works for me (I play Death Guard btw) is divide all my backlog into small sets of minis. Right now I need more marines. Ok, so l grab 4 marines with bolters and a champion. Paint em up with my regular paint schemes. Put the rest away in the cabinet. Don't ever look at it. Focus on the small squad l'm doing now. After this, I'll take another squad, or vehicle, or whatever. But not marines. I just did some marines, I want to do something else right now. For me, variety really is the spice, and swapping out between different kind of minis really helps a lot. Doing 40 marines in a row makes it a drag. Also good luck with the mental health issue, my man.

I'm working on Worldeaters army at the moment. It's the other way around for me. Each model is heavily converted so it takes extensive greenstuff work and cost to buy the bits to get a model assembled. The method I've got for painting them is fairly easy however, so the wall for me is building.

I made one crucial error with Warhammer. I got into AoS, because it looked fun and I wanted to go for an army I like. I like too many armies.. and I found out that I don't really enjoy batch painting.. and I found some of the 40k factions just really fun visually. Those revelations all came after I purchased a Skaven SC box, an Ogors SC box AND the Feast of Bones box, because I fancied the Skaven, Ogor and Bonereapers. So I have these three fat boxes while I kept buying smaller boxes of 40k and Necromunda stuff, because I found out about Skirmish games and the small scale appeals to me and my love for literally 'every' army. I can have a Tau squad as well as a Tyranid one, some cool Necromunda boys, but also a cool little Stormcast Warcry Warband and so on. So now I have all these fun little boxes like a box of Gretchin and Nobz respectively. But I'm shackled by these big Start Collecting boxes and Feast of bones and it just really kills my motivation. Yet I don't wanna sell that stuff, in case I'll ever get interested in these big projects again.

I've been working on some chaos models. My way to make myself do it is to not allow myself to put them on the table until they are done being painted. I do have knights from another source to push their points up so there's that. But almost done painting what I got of chaos.

Take all the time you need, we're not going anywhere. As for motivation with painting, I must admit I've never had a problem with it, but my brother has. He had had a squad of Storm Guardians, primed on his desk for weeks with no progress. One day he and I agreed to get in touch over Discord and chat while he, as the agreement went, got some orange paint on them. Just orange, that was all that was required of him for that day. Less than a week later he sent me a picture of a finished squad of Storm Guardians. Sometimes a small nudge is all you need. Also Kirioth, I just want you to know that I always find the "toodeloo" at the end of your videos really calming. I always feel better after hearing it.

Sounds like all good, sensible advice there mate, well said...taking a break from things if you need to, and also putting the majority of your backlog out of sight can both really help. I've been into 40k for a little over 5 years now, and over that time, I've accumulated (largely thanks to a horrendous amount of questionable, late-night ebay purchases), somewhere in the region of 30000 points worth of models...about 15000 worth of orks, about 7000 worth of death guard, about 3000 worth of nurgle daemons, about 2000 worth of AoS squigs, and probably around 3000 worth of marines (so far), which will be a combo 30k/40k salamanders army... It was all a bit bloody insane, frankly...and, I still don't have a single fully painted army, because I dip between projects/armies all the bloody time...so, last week, I got organised. I put away all the death guard, daemons, squigs, and marines...had a massive sort through my orks, and managed to split them, almost entirely, into 7 separate, clan-themed armies, and put 6 of those away as well...now I've just got one nice, manageable 1850-point army to deal with. ...and I'm actually really enthusiastic about it now...it's an achievable goal, there's "light at the end of the tunnel", instead of just an insurmountable pile of doom.

I basically dipped in and out of the hobby for several years. I did exactly as many others do, buy shit, build it, maybe prime it if the weather permits, play with them, but painting? Eh. In the very beginning, i didn't enjoy painting at all. I took a lot of time to produce results i was largely unhappy with, and i based a lot of my expectations on what people on the internet said was right and proper. I am a very impatient person by nature, so all of that kept me from really building motivation to paint. Recently, i was playing video games, as i usually do, but i became really fucking annoyed by my library of games, and as i sat there, bored with nothing to do, i decided "well, might as well paint". And somehow, this time it stuck. I think i'd say what helped me personally was actually kicking myself less in the ass about it. Once i developed a more relaxed attitude towards painting, and didn't become pissed off when i didn't paint for a while, or painted slowly, is when i really started to enjoy it. Your videos have also been a great help in keeping my hobby momentum going. As for the spotlight, i'd say don't sweat it. You said from the beginning that it'll take a long ass time to go through everything, so i think everyone is prepared for it taking a long ass time^^ Get well mate.

I'm actually really hoping that the new contrast paint system they are putting out will drastically help with some of the older armies. I did sell a lot of my older armies or incomplete projects. Right now my goal is to get all unfinished kits built and at least start painting my Nighthaunts and Knights before the Sisters come out. I know when the Sisters come out they'll be my sole project for awhile as my motivation to get them going is very high at least right now. Once i get the book and see what is being released that might die though.

I totally agree with the: hide the not current projects away. I also tend to leave at least some elements of the current stuff visible, so it stays in my mind and draging the project out to tinker with it doesn't feel like a chore in itself. I have had quite a few people close to me suffer from depression, so if i do not see my work in progress knight in the community spotlight (sent it in as a way to stay motivated as a matter of fact) i completely understand and want you to know that you are really appreciated for the cool guy you are......and your videos are quality as well 😁

That Decimator-Leviathan conversion is quality! It's so damn cool that want to try on that for my own army. What is the autocannon from? I've found thay getting organized has helped me with hobby motivation. I have spreadsheets for how many miniatures I have painted, as well as how many I have remaining to paint, obviously arranged by army/unit. I found this helps me quantify where I'm at and what progress I make, plus it helps me avoid unnecessary purchases. On the note of depression, I'm glad you're seeking help and not ignoring it. Honestly, I probably need to start talking to a therapist myself in the near future. Best of luck to you and I hope things get better on that front.

It can be hard. When I get sick of painting Yellow (Lamenters), I move to another project, usually something to do with a Kill Team. That usually does it for me. For me. Everyone is different. So far I've managed to paint half a company of Lamenters (only 55 to go!) and something like... *counts on fingers and mumbles to self* five Kill Teams with radically different color schemes (no yellow!!).

This is why they have invented contrast paints, I feel the same way but to be honest I'm as excited for these paints as I am for building and I hate painting but I think they have dealt with it. We will see.

Still sitting on a bunch of 30k Imperial Fists, 40k Raven Guard and my custom legion. What helped me get painting for a while was finding new techniques for airbrushing but I stopped painting again about 3 weeks ago. So much work to do and it keeps piling up!

I cant tell you how many times ive wanted to drop my Chaos Space Marines to start on something else that I listened to the lore of, only to have to tell myself finish your 2k points and enjoy this army. But in truth the one of the things not forcing me to switch is that I also run D&d so it helps that im not on one hobby 24/7 I suppose.

This is one of the reasons i always gravitate towards space marines or similar armies. I feel that in order for me to paint i want to know the story behind each dude i then start painting them based on that. For example i messed up cut of the foot of one of my IG sergeants and decided to give him a peg leg and dubbed him “peg leg bob” and he is on a mission to receive enough glory to receive a bionic upgrade. But the commisar always gets all the credit making him super angry and somewhat suicidal But then i would have to do something similar with each 100+ dudes which makes that a bit difficult

Kirioth......best thing you can do for your mental health is your diet. Seriously, eliminate added sugars, beans(legumes), dairy, and grain. In two weeks you'll feel like a new person. Dead serious. Stay away from processed foods. It takes great effort but it's well worth it. We evolved as nomadic hunters so eat those things nomadic hunters ate......meat, tree bearing fruits and nuts, eggs, mushrooms......look up Whole30. It works. FYI, just became a member. You're a great fellow and fun to listen to.

My greatest tip for painting armies is don't build them before you paint. keep them in bits then the force is one model at a time painting and building as a package, it might not work for everyone, but ive always been less overwhelmed when its two or three sprues as four or five pieces as apposed to 20 models.

I have got a bit of unpainted models, but something that I have done is promise to myself that I will not get any new models or build anythig new until I have painted everything else

Dear Mr Kirioth. As a fellow long term victim of depression, your video today spurred me to throw my own metaphorical spuds onto the barbecue of the comments section and send a few words of support in your general direction. I recognise that depression affects us all in different ways and that any words of advice or encouragement from some total stranger on the internet could and indeed should be rammed firmly up the bumholie of said internet stranger and set fire to with extreme prejudice. The thing is, to me, you are far from some random stranger. I have watched and thoroughly enjoyed your content for two or three years now and in my own small way I see you as a dear old friend who always brings a smile to my face and a fresh, well informed opinion on the 40k hobby. Due to this, it genuinely pains me to see you walking that dread, lonely and all too familiar path to wreck and ruin because I know where it leads and how hard the return journey can be. Anyway, amateur dramatics aside, I just wanted to take the time to say that you’re a beautiful man Mr K, your work never fails to inspire and entertain and my life is richer by far because you are a part of it. May the deity of your choice bless you, sir. And remember..... all is dust. But don’t let that put you off your breakfast.

I burned myself out on the hobby years ago, roughly 7th ed fantasy era, stuffed everything in boxes and did something else. Had an "If I'm not enjoying it, I'll stop doing it" mindset, got bored one day and dug out the paints and some minis and started again. There are some I still want to finish but there's no rush (he says while waiting to use the contrast paints on the Skaven horde)

Good video, I've watched your videos a couple of times over the years, but didn't realized I wasn't subscribing for some reason... so I'm doing that now. But take it easy, don't worry about us, you just take care of yourself. :) I totally understand you need a filter, it's fascinating to me that you can be whoever you want on the internet, and so many still end up choosing to be haters or feel like they have to have a public opinion about everything.

After a while I stopped caring if the models are effective in battle and dreamt up stories behind each thing I paint. :)

Totally agree with you. If your painting space marines do it 5 at a time & keep the paint scheme simple. I found that painting something else in between squads worked.

Kirioth you need to be a therapist or soemthing. I had a Tupperware full of bloodletters that were primed and just there. I've used them in games but never painted. Right now I'm listening to your video and painting them now.

I'm waiting for contrast before I tackle 240 guardsmen. Soooo . . .yeah. . . Hey Kirioth about whatever is going on in your head, can I suggest taking a look at OnTableTop's "Opening up" weekender? I for one can relate to how they communicated about the topic.

I was starting to have the same problem with my armies , I’m painting up black legion and ultramarines for this years armies on parade along with a load of scenery and was worried i wasn’t going to complete them in time , the mrs asked me how long it takes me per model and worked out how long it will take me for each one and then wrote me a list to tick off each time and i’ve found this has helped me out loads as i can split my time now between painting and building models and building the board . Great video buddy and are you on instagram?

It's OK to have a slow burning project alongside other, faster ones. My mental health is also pretty rubbish right now, things are fun for around half an hour till my mood crashes, so I'm building some hills and scenery just so I can do something productive.

My current excuse is waiting for contrast paints to come out :( but also something that works (some of the time) for me is to read a book featuring your chapter, play a 40k game or something that's mentally inspiring, create imaginary scenarios featuring your chapter or xenos kin where there the bad ass Mother f**kers you feel in love with.

I know the feeling; I felt a bit flush, so I not have another.... 40-odd Guardsmen to paint(and a bonus 2 tanks). On the up side, it does mean that the bulk of my first full (going by my mental organisational chart) company; I just need to decide what to do about a commanding ossifer for them. They'll probably get an old lead Mordian Lieutenant for that. Since my cupboard of shame already runneth over, probably not the wisest decision.

BTW, I've put all of my Imperial Guard and my Genstealers away, so I can't even look at them. The only models I'm worry about now are my Iron Warriors, which is my slow burn army, and the hills and other terrain I'm building for the club.

I have found that nothing motivates me to paint like having a deadline. Every time I've been due to go to an Underworlds Grand Clash I've wanted a painted warband, so the looming deadline always spurs me on to actually get shit done. Maybe I should enter 40k/AoS events and use the same approach for those armies....

I'm not gonna pretend I know how you're feeling right now, cos I enjoy your videos too much (even when I don't agree with you) to insult your intelligence. But putting your mental health ahead of making videos is ABSOLUTELY the right thing, I hope...well I suppose it'd be stupid to say I hope you'll be better soon, but I at least hope things get easier for you

Listen to an audio book or documentary while painting. Ill even binge watch some anime for hours while painting. The idea to kill two birds with one stone could motivate you. Also when youre not motivated i find the hardest part is sitting down and starting. Once you do start youll get motivated. At least that works for me.
