4 жыл бұрынSri Lankan Skipper Arjuna Ranatunga started the war much earlier than the first ball of the Final. Ranatunga got to the nerves of Shane Warne and he seemed unable to get out of it. The tension was visible between the two with long-stares and short word exchanges. Arjuna hit the ball back ferociously through Warne's fingers in his last over before continuing on to dispatch a chest-high full tossed delivery over long leg for a maximum. Sri Lankan victory was merely a formality by the time Warne completed his spell with a costly last over.

Everybody talks about Jayasuriya, Ranatunga, Vaas. Nobody talks about the real boss man - Aravinda DeSilva. What a legend. So under rated.

Aravinda DeSilva was the best batsman Sri Lanka has ever produced but as far this match goes Australia dropped 2 vital and easy catches. First Asanka Gurusinghe was dropped of Paul Reiffel and then Ranatunga was dropped of Bevan. Had those catches been taken the match would have been a lot closer than it was. But yes Sri Lanka left a profound impact on that tournament. I mean they beat India in India twice in that WC. And Warne could not do anything in that final. But full credit to Ranatunga. He did transform Sri Lanka from being a competitor to India, Aus, Eng, SA, Pakistan to the number 1 side in the world.

the day before the final, 2 teams were having lunch and meanwhile, Aussies were taking photographs with the trophy. Aussies invited arjuna and co to take photographs but arjuna said 'we will do it later at home'

Yes Sri Lanka was a great team then. But Australian team dropped 3 catches of Sri Lankan batsman in the final. I saw the highlights as i was too young in 1996. If those catches were not dropped then Aussies would have won that

@@ranahasan24 That just proves the Australian team was lousy on the field that day. I watched the match live and there was no way Australia could have stopped that chase. Besides, Mark Taylor's team wasn't the best side in the subcontinent. I still remember the Titan Cup where they lost most of their matches against India and South Africa. And India was captained by Sachin who'd soon lose his captaincy.

It’s been 26 years on 17/3/2022. In a recent TV show 1996 SL players explained how confident Arjuna was before the final. There had been a time allocated for both teams to take photos with the World Cup on the day of the final. When Aussie team completed their time with the cup it was the SL team who was supposed to take pictures. When organizers reached Arjuna to inform the same Arjuna had told the organizers, there is no need for photos because “ we are taking the cup home”.

What must be admired of Shane Warne is he comes out with different techniques to make the batsman out without losing confidence every time he got hit. That's some mental upkeep.

Wow what a video. Seems Warne was very disturbed and not focused enough due to raw anger inside. Not in his rhythm and composure to make an impact. A cricketing video teaching the importance of calmness of mind much needed in every sphere of life.

After this WC, the dominance that the Aussies imposed was an Legendary won i mean winning the WC grandest cups of all time for 3 consecutive times then again after one year of pause again in the lap for the 4th time in 2015..5 WC winning cups.

Their dominance started when the defeated Pakistan in 1999 final. That was the point Australia team gained the confidence to do wonders in next 10 years or so

Well Aussies definitely must have got inspired due to that 1992 Pak WC win that is what you want to say. Well it happens buddy with you Pakiz mentality that you just want to keep on boasting your own imaginary stuffs. That Hammering or treatment that they gave Pak in that WC 1999 final said it all that what the Aussies were going to do in the upcoming times. After that hardly Pakistan were able to Dominate the Aussies.

I vaguely remember this game. I think SL lost the opening wickets early in the innings. But Ranatunga and Arvinda stayed and turned the tides around.

Arjuna played a mind game by saying what he said about warne's "overhyped" bowling....everyone including warne knew how good a spinner warne was but ranatunga spoke of him as if he were a schoolboy and warne trying to make ranatunga pay for his lip instead ended up with an ass kicking

Ranatunga was a special skipper . He was super fast 💨 running between the wickets . And was never scared of confrontation with the opposition bowlers . 1996 Sri Lankan victory was well deserved. Perhaps 2 teams that could have derailed Sri Lanka were Pakistan 🇵🇰 and South Africa 🇿🇦 who both were surprisingly eliminated in the final 8 .
