After tasting a local specialty coffee 2 years ago I decided to finally invest in a Silvia. I was very disappointed when I couldn't reproduce the taste of the coffe and thought my technique was just off. Now, 2 years later I found out that my pump pressure was too low and after adjusting the espresso was basically perfect. Thank you so very much, you helped me a lot!

It's never ending. Since this video I've readjusted so many times to get both a dry puck and good pressure at the same time. I've pretty well adjusted back to the original position if I'm totally honest

Outstanding video! My Silvia was definitely off. It's about 7 years old. I'm not sure if it was because we moved earlier this year from sea level to over 5500ft or if it's always been off. Probably both because since the move I've been trying to adjust my recipe but wasn't tasting as good as I knew it should be. I suspected pressure issues and thought maybe my pump was bad. I never knew I could measure the pressure like this so this video was a godsend. I made the adjustment and got it dialed in to ~135g @ 30 sec. I proceeded to pull some test shots for 30 sec with 17g of my favorite med roast in a #102 basket. After an adjustment on my Rocky down one notch for a finer grind I yielded 55g. A nearly perfect 1:3 normale. Tasted absolutely fantastic.

On higher altitudes the boiling temperature of water is lower as well. So when the thermostat functions at sea level, it could run it too hot on altitude.

Actually I have no problems brewing my esspresso, but when I starts a pump, it is accompanied by sufficiently strong vibrations, so that the glass can "run away". Sorry if I've missed it but what are the exact steps to get water to flow from the short tube please? I've tried several combos and either just get a backflush (using blind basket) or water from head or wand. I can't figure out what combo is used to get water from the tube and I'm not seeing this part in any video I have watched. EDIT: So I read all the comments here and found one saying it's using the middle switch for hot water. I can run mine with the hose inserted and I get a steady stream from the arm. If I then lift the hose, nothing comes back out of the hose but the sound of the pump changes.

Freshly roasted beans and a quality grinder are essential. As soon as coffee beans are roasted they begin to lose their flavor, no matter what kind of "sealed", "one-way-valve" or whatever packaging is used. Besides, you need to have control of the grind in order to dial-in the best cup.

My Silvia v6 sucks. I’ve always been getting an uncertain extraction time using the same grinder settings and exactly same beans. It was 25 seconds for 30 gram extraction but it changed to 14 seconds the day after, so I always calibrate the grinder everyday. Does the problem come from an always changing pressure bar? There’s no way my sette 270wi would deliver various result while I didn’t change the settings.

Great guide. I just gave it a try and I got 174g in 30s, which means not enough pressure at the portafilter. I don't have 2 x 20mm spanners, so I will have to sort that out next. However, the reason I found this video was because my Silvia has started to pump water through too fast. It was always a little on the fast side. If it is too fast, does that not mean too much pressure at the coffee? But the flow rate I get is 147g/ 30s, which is 33% over the rate and indicates too little pressure. What is happening?

Hi, Thank you for this interesting video. I wanted to share my experience adjusting pressure/ flow rate on my Silvia. I bought I pressure gage that fits onto my portafilter to compare with the flow rate and this is what I got. FYI : - Pressure gage bought on a online coffee shop. Is it perfectly calibrated, don't know ? - Cooking scale. Perfect calibrated, don't know ? - Readings and measurements have been made 2 - 3 times and approx +/- 1 - 2secs, and +/- 1 - 2 g Boiler temp : 82°C - 93°C Flow rate Pressure Factory setting : 160 g in 30 secs 10 Bars Adjusting : 150 g in 30 secs 11 Bars 183 g in 30 secs 9 Bars 185 g 8.5 Bars 205 g 7 Bars I've done my final adjustment to 8.5 Bars. Couldn't reach the 130g in 30secs flow rate as my pump could only deliver 11 - 11.5 Bars. I does make sense to me, if you reduce pressure you increase for rate and the other way around. When extracting coffee pressure and flow rate can be influenced by : Beans ? Amount (14g/16g/18g) Grind size ( Coarse or fine) Tamping T° ? Hope this was helpful. Please give any feedback.

I noticed when I measured the flow rate that I had to let water come out of the steam wand before anything came out of the OPV line. Also, how long did you leave your machine to warm up before doing the test? Does it matter? Finally, what is the difference in accuracy between measuring flow from the OPV line and using a pressure gauge attached to the porta filter?

@@rcgsail1 OPV pressure does not equal brew head pressure, often by several barr. They correlate, but not closely. It's an OVER pressure valve. Also it may be possible the valve is not working…. Maybe lack of cleaning with a blind porta filter You might try entirely disassembling the brass valve Basically there is a spring with maybe a ball inside As you screw in the valve… it increases the pressure from the spring and so reduces the overflow water As you loosen… less pressure on the spring and more flow from a lower pump pressure So the only reason for no flow would be no water, wrong hose, or defective valve Oh…. Also make sure the overflow hose is not kinked

After again adjusting the OPV, the second measurement was 110 ml. Finally, the 3rd one produced 130 ml.in 30 seconds. With that, my pour took 25 seconds, and produced a cup with slightly more (pleasant) acidity and nice crema. I'm very grateful for your help with this.
