When we reviewed the Randall Thrasher in the February 2014 issue of Guitar World, we discovered that Randall was making some fascinating low-wattage high-gain amps as part of its Diavlo Series.
A few weeks later, the new RD5H head and RD112-D cabinet arrived at our studio so we could put them through their paces.
While the Thrasher is a fire-breathing beast for the biggest concert stages, the RD5H Diavlo is designed primarily for the recording studio or practice when you want massive-sounding, highly saturated gain tones but don't need 130dB to get your point across.

I have this amp for about a year now. Only reason why I watched this was I am looking to buy a second one. It has been a very good amp. Easy to dial in a good tone and has held up well.

Love Randall amps! I have the Randall RD1C and that little beasts kicks ass for one watt. Metal heads go pick these up for your next amp. They fucking kick ass!!!

Looking hard at this Randall Diavlo 1w & 5w, Blackstar HT1, & Marshall DSL 1 but don’t know which to go with my marshall 2x12” cab I got for Christmas?#HeadHelp#OpinionsNeeded#🎸🤘🏻🎸

The 6V6 gives it a personality of its own. I installed a 59 Sylvania black glass power tube and Mullard 12AX7. Tamed the icepicky highs and improved the tone.

I have a Randal RD1H, I run a Maxon OD808 in front, with the amp gain around 11 o'clock. I run it through a Randal 4x12 cab, and it sounds really good for what it is. These little amps are PERFECT for bedroom playing, and maybe even gigging if the sound guy is micing your cab. Highly recommend these little heads if you want something to play around with. They also have a Speaker emulator? XLR output for recording, and it sounds good coming through that as well.

I just picked one of these up. Running an eq in the effects loop and sending it to a 4x12 cab and it sounds great. It handles pedals pretty well too. Well worth the asking price IMO.

Ok as a Dimebag fan I have always liked Randall. And I love mini heads, I prefer atleast 15 watts but for 5 watts this tiny amp sounds impressive. Id throw an eq pedal and a noise gate in front but other than that that little head sounds like a beast. I mean Paul didn't sound like shit...thats impressive in my book.

I had this amp for a week.... I expected it to be high gain, but it's not. I ended up using a Boss Metal Zone pedal in front of the clean channel of my Mesa Boogie Express... it sounds a lot better :-)

And according to SpectreSoundStudios doing back to back tests with self biasing amps and re-amping the same track with the same IR and then using a null test basically proved that there is no evidence that different brands of tubes have any effect on tone they do if I remember correctly however have an effect on amplitude it’s a seriously big pill to swallow as guitar players who have went for generations being told that this tube will sound warm and that tube sounds shrill and aside from spending money for something that we otherwise wouldn’t need the only reason for our tone to change is because of the biasing that the tech will likely do after installing the new tubes as well as the whole “I just spent 300$ on super rare NOS tubes made from magic pixie dust and unicorn farts and my amp has never sounded better” placebo effect.... But that’s no different than josh from Jhs pedals saying that it’s not the chip that makes the difference in an overdrive pedal it’s the circuit that matters and as someone with a background in DC electricity(building modifying and installing electrical equipment and circuitry in first response/ emergency vehicles as my career ) I tend to believe their opinions based on their explanations and my education, understanding, and personal/professional experience although not sound related circuits are circuits anyways just food for thought

Hmmm.. Not really digging this one. I don't know the right word, but it's kind of... Sterile? Empty? I dunno. Just feels like something's missing. It's got good crunch, but personally I like a fatter, warmer sound than anything I'm hearing here.
@redukonio
@redukonio 10 жыл бұрын
mhh they miced it right in the center of the Speaker. This could be the reason for the lack of warmth.

People in the comments are split on this head , some love it , some hate it . I think you have to be into heavy , thrashy music to appreciate this head . Overall I think it doesn't sound too bad, I think I can probably be dialed in a little better or mic'ed better . The tone is good but it's pretty much a metal only amp ... But the amp does sound like it has potential with some effects and maybe a bigger cab

+Guitar Player heard that! Won't find much bass there! I have a cpl rvc5s. They sound much better through a GOOD 1x12 2x12 or 4x12 if you want even more bass. For $100 or less (used)...bad ass little amp. I just posted a vid of my custom tolex wrap on my rvc. If you want to see a different look. Looks much better now!

Do you remember if your RD-5 had a slight buzzing noise, really very subtle. I have it with passive humbuckers. Checked my JetCity, no noise at all at the same socket, same guitar. The buzz is gone when I plug in a guitar with actives! Very strange.
