For what it's worth, my husband said that Earnie hit him so hard it hurt his grandkids. My husband broke Shavers jaw in the 8th. That said, you can't meet a nicer guy than Shavers....a gentle giant, and we remain friends with him to this day. Classy guy.

+Sharon Cobb Just saw your comment. Your husband was some kind of warrior in the ring. He dodged nobody and was always prepared when he crawled through those ropes. I can only imagine what it must have been like for you to be at ringside during his bouts. It is a vicious, unforgiving sport. I hope Tex is well after so many brutal fights and that life for the both of you is good.

Cobb was an iron post embedded in four feet of concrete. And besides that he is so multi-dimensionable. A boxer, karate, actor, comedian, great wit, a good human being, humble. His humorous roast of Larry Holmes was comedic genius, mixed with good will and humility. He obliterated racial borders way back. And he just knew how to have a good time and share his magnificent personality. The guy was always brimming with confidence. The world is a better place because of him and people like him.

@jonathanmillner
@jonathanmillner 3 жыл бұрын
@@Chief2Moon Totally agree. Shavers is clearly the better boxer in almost every respect, except Chin and Motor. And... the way the fight went, as soon as Shavers was gassed, Cobb had to just keep on him and keep throwing punches till his spirit was just crushed. Didn't let Shavers get his breath. I like Cobb. He boxes kinda like an amateur, but damn he has chin and keeps throwing punches... and won pretty often doing it. Entertaining guy to watch...

Yeah remember Foreman downing Moore? That didn't look like a power punch loaded up from behind the back either, but a heavyweight like that creating momentum with his lead close to his body only needs to put his weight in one hip and it's still a murderous punch

Cobb could probably take a punch better than anyone in history. Both Shavers and Holmes unloaded on him, punching him dozens and dozens of times, and Cobb wouldn't go down. And Cobb kept landing punches in both fights, right up to the end. One a win (here), and the other a convincing loss - but one where he showed ZERO quit and was still able to land punched all throughout the fight.

Cobb was a good fighter but never close to the great fighters, but, that's not a crime. He was tough, had a solid but not great punch, a rock hard chin, and could go the distance against some very good fighters. When you got in the ring you had better be ready, because Randy was going to give all he had.

Tex Cobb was no joke Granted Holmes beat the sh*t out of him but Holmes was a beast starting his career 48-0

Ken Norton and Gerry Cooney talking trash about Cobb the whole time is kinda funny. Norton was KOd by Shavers in 1 Round.. And Holmes KOd Cooney.. but couldn't Cobb. And Cobb was laying a beating on Shavers at the end.

Referee was a bloody disgrace. The fight should have been stopped much earlier. Incompetence like that can kill a fighter

Ernie was the quintessential Journeyman in the 70s. If you could get past him, you got a shot at the title.

Ken Norton was a great fighter, champion and commentator. Makes the car accident which slowed him down significantly all the sadder.

Not a good fighter only came along in the twilight of better fighters before him. I was in Calif. and followed his fights and training.

Tough as Ernie Shavers was Jerry Quarry knocked him out in the first round of their fight!

True! Quarry’s ring smarts and strategy was perfect for that fight. He knew Shavers could be overly aggressive from the opening bell and was waiting!

The slippery ring was to Cobbs advantage.A puncher needs to have good foot stability and the moderators were horrible.

Shaver's main strength... The thunderous right, watered down by a ring floor with way too little shoe grip.

Ken Norton eventually paid a huge price for being so rude and dismissive of Gerry Cooney throughout the commentary.

Earlier in his boxing career, Earnie Shavers was a formidable heaviest puncher. However, in some of his matches including this one against Randall, he was overly fatigued than anything else. It seemed that later rounds were at his disadvantage.

Cobb wasn't very good but he was determined and had a granite chin. And a lot of heart Eanie was a beast, and had the power of a lion,,,that being said this was a good match. Ernie was a bit slow. And styles make a good fight. , muche respect to both. Very good guys in,and out of the ring,,,

They talk about Cobs punching power he was a kick boxer there power shots are kicks they never learned to put there body into punching,but if you hit someone enough times your going to hurt them.cob was a tough guy that's what it takes.
