It's always fun to buy random high voltage equipment from vague Chinese sellers on eBay and try and work out how it works and how to use it.
In this instance it turned out to be a gas burner ignitor with some interesting circuitry to optimise cost and function.
If you have one of these then here's how to wire and use it.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:- www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of KZfaq's algorithm quirks, allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

@@TheShutterNinja To push enough amps to kill you, you need voltage. A 12V car battery can deliver hundreds of amps. But at your body resistance there won't be enough current to do anything. Another thing that counts is the total amount of energy, in other words time.

The same circuit is used on that pocket arc cigarette lighters, powered by a single Li-Ion cell. They used the same circuit but with a bigger coil, therefore - I believe - it is more reliable. By replacing the transistor, I noted the only parameter that is important is the Ton - Toff time. I believe the transistor is specifically selected for a very low Toff time. Replacing it with the same spec audio transistor, it was heating up and blowing after few seconds. I had to use a transistor used for the 2 Watt CB transmitter (TO39 case) in order to get the correct switching time. I had the same problem 20 years ago with the inverter used to light up portable 6 W fluorescent tubes; they used special binned audio transistor which had no equivalent in the Sylvania ECG series, and which I had to replace with expensive RF Tx transistors. Thanks for the video Mr. Clive...
@superdau
@superdau Жыл бұрын
I doubt the transistor was selected for any other specific reason than being one of the cheapest TO-92 package transistors being able to handle more than 1A. There isn't anything else special about an SS8550 and I've seen it used in tons of devices. It might be possible to protect the transistor by putting a diode in series with the first transformer's primary, because the back EMF can kill the transistor's collector base junction. It will increase the input voltage needed to account for the diode drop.

Considering the "1.5-3V" input, this is probably correct. Lots of grills have a socket for a single AA cell to run circuits like these, though some will produce larger sparks at lower frequencies. Clive in the garage where I worked we used a Snap On spark plug tester that went faulty. When opened up there was a very simlar circuit to this inside it. (Couldn't fix it, got a free warranty replacemet) You would, open the lid, screw the plug in a hole in the top compartment, clip a lead on the top electrode of the spark plug, close the lid, push the button and if you see the spark through the clear window the plugs OK, no spark, duff spark plug, easy to use, small and portable. It took 2AAs in a compartment on the side. It had a safety switch on the lid as nothing happened if you pushed the button with the lid open, and it would stop sparking if you opened the lid while the button was pressed. You often get duff spark plugs even if they are bought new, we would test them before installation.

I suggest an arc-starter (also called arc-stabilizer) for TIG welding: it contains an HV step up circuit that charges an HV capacitor up to few kV. Once the capacitor is charged, a spark gap fires and connect the capacitor in parallel to the primary winding of the output transformer: the secondary side of this transformer is placed in series with the welder output. Of course, the output transformer is a pulse transfomer (usually 1:1 or with a slightly higher transfer ratio) with a small primary coil and a massive secondary coil capable to carry the whole welding current... hundreds of amps!. Older units were made with massive 50Hz laminated transformers, massive spark gaps, ceramic insulators, big caps and massive output transfomers (much much better to see!) but newer units are still cool. After the review, you can also install this device in your arc welder (are meant to be used with TIG welders, but are also very useful for regular stick welding!)

Nice one, Clive, thanks for doing a HV one! Yep it is a bit weird. I'd imagine the "buttons" might end up being transistors driven from a microcontroller. It seems odd that there's two, but I don't know much about gas boilers so perhaps that's how they design them. Shame the output transformers aren't connected with opposite polarity on the inputs. Then you'd be able to get twice the voltage, right? And not need the ground wire. Is that something you'd be able to tweak, swap the wires round? I've seen those transformers before! They seem to turn up in a lot of Chinese HV stuff. If it ain't broke... actually if it's from Ebay and it ain't broke it's a bloody miracle but never mind that.

The "trigger" circuit has to take the entire primary side current, an integrated hall switch couldn't do that. You could add a Triac to do the switching, but as the other guy said this likely isn't a high enough energy design, plus a motorcycle would be at least 6v and usualy 12v these days. I suppose it might be enough to power one of those model four stroke engines with a small enough plug gap.

I wonder if I could use something like this for testing old (often Bakelite) insulators? I rebuild vintage engine magnetos & have to test things like high tension pickups, distributor caps & slip rings to see if they’re still functioning properly (often they’re unobtainable, so I’d have to make them from scratch if they needed replacing). I currently use a weird setup (donated by a retiring magneto rebuilder who has since passed away) that uses a car ignition coil with a vibrating contact (using the slight magnetism from the end of the coil canister) but it’s very finicky to get it right, something like this would be better. It doesn’t want too much voltage or frequency though as the skin effect & ionisation will give false results. Oh yes, & I do wind & encapsulate my own coils, so I suppose I should stop being so lazy & build my own tester, I just wish I had the time.

Please beware that a coil vibrating it's own power switch has 2 classic uses: 1. As the "motor" part of doorbells, with an extended arm being the hammer striking the bell. 2. As the classic arc radio transmitter outputting on a mostly uncontrolled frequency.

@@bigclivedotcom In Germany many older Houses used to have single room oil powered furnaces many decades ago. This was an easy and convenient replacement for coal and wood furnaces. They were terrible from todays perspective but a great thing back then. Because most houses already had the exhaust passages already built in and a propper water based central heating furnace was more expensive to add to an allready existing Bildung. However most of them were manually lit by a match so you had to turn on the oil and wait for the burner pot to get wet. But not too long otherwise you won't get it started. But there were some more fancy units with automatic ignition systems. This was basically a device like a glow plug and a spark plug combined. A small ceramic based cotton-like material was soaked in oil, heated by a wire until the oil starts to vapourise and a spark genetator above ignited the fumes. And I want to build something similar with an diesel engine glow plug and a spark genetator like this for my mobile oil heater DIY project. Because "OEM" replacements for these furnaces are very specialized to fit the device they are built for and they are heavily overpriced.

I don't believe it can generate enough continuous current for a Jacob's ladder. You may have noticed that it doesn't arc constantly --- it arcs repeatedly, every time the capacitor discharges ---- I don't think that would allow for the ionization build up a ladder needs.

It doesn't have enough voltage. A few eons ago, I played around with the hv of a 13" b&w crt. It was probably 13kv or so. The max, IIRC, arc was under 1/2". Compare that to a large neon sign transformer of the 70s that could arc up to about 4".

@bluerizlagirl

It won't be from a boiler -- there's no flame detection. A boiler igniter has a timing circuit to purge the firebox before the gas valve opens, then hold the valve open for a few seconds; during which time, if a flame is sensed, the gas valve stays open, otherwise it goes into lock-out.

V-twin coil pack maby? Or electric fence..
@michaellegg9381

Thinking about it 🤔 id assume a twin cylinder engine given the 2 outputs with the 2 signal wires for some sensor or some management system to fire 2 plugs at different times.. could also use it to run 2 seperate electronic fences (2 units total 6v and would run 4 fences) but unlikely to be a fence based on the size of the unit and how it wires up and is triggered i really think it might be a cheap aftermarket product to add a coil pack ignition to something burning petroleum or LPG like a BBQ or motorbike as it's battery operated.. the potential uses for this are huge.. something from China thats not 100% landfill e-waist lol..

Did you draw the transformer circuit backwards? Isn't it energizing the secondary winding and using the primary windings as the discharge cable?
@amojak
@amojak Жыл бұрын
the circuit is a classic car ignition type, you pull the primary, then let go and it puts the secondary in series with the primary. Car ignitions put a small capacitor across the contact and fitting one here may help reduce switch burn.

Primary is defined as the energy input side, not the lowest voltage side. Big power stations often have huge transformers between the dangerous generator voltage on the primary and the secondary output to the long distance part of the grid using 100kV or more to allow thinner wires between cities.
