Agreed, the EZ-SAND takes 6-8x longer than a drum sander to remove the top layer of finished floors. It can do it with 24 grit but will take 4 or more full passes across the floor. I'd consider it a finishing sander. I used one on three bedrooms and a hallway and it took three 8-hour days to finish the sanding before the floor was smooth with 120 grit. The advantage of this is it's the second most 'aggressive' of the sanders from the rental center, behind the drum sander which as you've emphasized can really mess up a floor if the user isn't experienced.

Same sander from Home depot. Works great. You have to keep going to get it flat no matter what tool you use.

As someone that has sanded an entire floor with a palm sander, I don't see how this one is a problem

I'm in the midst of this exact same saga now. Got the orbital (same one), had to run back to store to get swap my useless 36/60/100 discs for a ton of 24 grit, committed to this sander, etc.

Never ever run 24 grit on a floor. Leave that for the pros like i’d mentioned.

Also wish I found your video before I rented...and Home Depot should allow reviews of their rental tools because I can't imagine this sander works for anyone without a perfectly flat floor. My situation is a prefinished oak floor (Bruce) that I installed myself about 25 years ago. With prefinished flooring you can get some small thickness variations board-to-board that never get sanded out like they do on a site finished floor. These variations are imperceptible when new but boy they sure show up when you sand. After 3 hours sanding with the coarsest grit (225 Sq ft room) I still have many dark spots where the boards meet. I'm guessing I'm about half way before I can move up to the next grit. I think i'm going to call it quits and go rent the drum sander in the morning.

That sander should really only be used to clean up after the drum sander and edger. Drum sanders are WAY easier than 30 years ago. Back then you had to hold pressure manually. They rocked on 2 wheels. Today they stand straight on 3 wheels and you lower drum to floor with a lever. A new floor isn't any better. Don't start with the multi head random orbital sander here. Boards are uneven and lots of material sometimes needs to go. Drum sander is again the best. The next fastest option behind drum I think is the Varathane 3 head orbital sander. I've used that too. Faster than the one you have here but still just ok... My method now will be rental drum sanding, rental edger, clean edges with handheld random orbital (like a dewalt) then finish off with rental 3 or 4 head random orbital like you're using here.

Thanks. I was just about to rent one of those for my floor job. Guess I will look for a hydra sand and R16.

The HD drum sander is HEAVY. It was also not easy to remove and replace the sandpaper. FYI for DIYers like me.

25 years ago I refinished about 700 sq ft in my house with a drum sander I rented. Never done it before. Took my time and was very careful, no chatter. Become one with the sander.

used same machine in 2020 on walnut flooring living room did 3 or 4 grits finished it with pallman pal x product . looks just as good as the professionals who did the kitchen dining front hall areas a year later. just keep sanding. and use a palm ros when needed.

Was considering the ROS, even perhaps the rectangular one, without first using the Drum sander. I realize now it would be a fool’s errand to do so. Unlike your floor, mine is not so old and never sanded and refinished, but nonetheless you have cleared it up. There are no shortcuts. The random orbitals, as you have demonstrated, just do not pack the wallup. And KZfaq videos make( skillfully) using the drum sander appear very manageable. I fear that is not quite the case. So it’s back to the drawing board for me. Spend the ton of money required for The Pro, or DIY and live with the results. Thanks

even with a drum sander....all the different grits needed to do that floor DEFINITELY TAKE MORE THAN 4 hrs.unless you are flying by it.that machine is only good for sanding perpendicular boards.when you cant go along the grain.
