Thank you SO much! You saved me having to call for service or a tow to service. I was so nervous using the fuse box to jump. I am grateful that you recommended to charge the battery in the back of the car after small jump to open the trunk. I was worried that the jump on the fuse wouldn’t work because there is black plastic backing it with no way to separate the metal from it, but apparently only one side of the cable clipper needs to make contact with the metal because it worked!

@@RANDOMFIX Just wanted to emphasize how superior your video was. In order to avoid being charged for the car to be towed, we opted to charge the rear battery. It did involve crawling into the hatch to manually release the latch. We were able to charge it and get it down to the repair shop to get a new battery. All this just ahead of very cold weather and a snow storm.

So all you needed to do was charge from the back, did it matter how long you did this? My car won't start but the map light and dome light are dimmed when the car is opened, would that be a battery issue or something else?
@mwmoore123
@mwmoore123 2 жыл бұрын
@@jhicksobu19892011 There is a battery in the back that you'll find by lifting the cover to get to the spare tire. The battery is on the right (I had to pull off a cover once I got in there). You'll see the battery there where you can hook up some jumper cables to jump the car... once you have the jumpers on the battery correctly (Plus to Plus, negative to negative), you should see your dash lights come up to normal. Pushing the start button should start the car if everything else is good. On my Prius, this worked and it started and went for a drive and all was good. Came back after another could day and it was dead again. I need another battery - It was at least 4 years old. I think what might be confusing to some people with this is where first a jumper connection is needed to unlock the car to get into where the battery is in the back. My car was locked. Connecting the jumpers under the hood is to simply allow the door locks to operate and unlock to gain access to the rear.
@RANDOMFIX

Thank you for sharing and yes you are right and I didn't want to make the video longer and as you stated you need to have enough power to open the rear tailgate and that is purpose of the power ports in the engine compartment.

Able to skip the door & trunk lock issues; otherwise wouldn't even have known to look in the trunk. We could have used more visual on getting that 2nd cover off the 12-volt in the corner of the trunk; he had to dismantle the subfloor storage a bit. We carry the cables, he doesn't, but between the 3 of us it actually went fast.

Ken, how's your parking situation? if you parking the vehicle in your home garage then you can leave the hood up and just connect to little connect at the front or in the hatch, please make sure you keep a window open in the garage and also in your car as the battery inside the car. Charging batteries can produce dangerous/explosive gas even with a little battery tender. I hope that helps and let me know if you have any questions

The 12 volt battery is only used to turn on the system the high voltage hybrid battery starts the engine all this information is in the owners manual.
@d1oftwins
@d1oftwins 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed! On a Toyota hybrid turning on the system doesn't need high (cranking) amperage because the 12v battery doesn't crank the engine but just makes the high voltage hybrid battery go life which then cranks the engine with the electric high voltage motors. I highly doubt that there is more than 100 amps needed to start the Prius so you do not need to put the contact clamps directly to the battery in the trunk. Just leave it the clamps at the front under the hood, worked with a Prius 2 for me. And due to the low amp usage the donor car doesn't even have to run the engine. As a matter of fact a quick googling has revealed that you generally do not need more than 30 amps with an occasional hint of a 60 amp peak, an amount of energy of about 90 amp-seconds, which is a ridiculously tiny amount of energy and power that is needed to start a up a Prius system into "Ready" state and get the engine going. irobin.org/prius/startup/startup.html

Always connect the positive first, the whole chassis is negative so there will be less chance for error or accidental connections.

I read that you are not supposed to start the other car that you are using to charge the prius battery.....is this true? Will it charge it if you just have it hooked up and don't have the other car started??? Thanks!
@RANDOMFIX
@RANDOMFIX 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Lacey, Yes, the Prius the battery will charge if you don't start the other vehicle. However, I don't recommend doing it that way, The reason why you want the other vehicle on is so the alternator of vehicle running will help revive the Prius's 12-volt battery and not take a chance of depleting the booster vehicle's battery. I've never had a problem jumping a vehicle in this manner over the last 25 years. I hope that helps. _RandomFix

Today I changed my 2009 touring prius passenger mirror and when I was done my prius was dead, did not wanna start. Don't know if battery drained while door was open but car was working fine before and during installation. I wonder if a cable became loose on door and that is preventing it from turning on which does not make any sense?

Buy a battery tester that can measure CCA and check the 12V battery regularly. If below 300 CCA buy a better one. I buy used ones and test them out at the yunk yard. If you have a weak battery (or even a good one) and you're not starting your car for more than a week it's probably better do disconnect the 12 V battery. The electronics will discharge the 12 V battery slowly. If you like taking risks jump start through the fuse box. You'll feel great if all the modules still work. Don't complain if a module starts failing after a few weeks. In this situation in this video I would charge the battery while disconnected or take the battery home and charge it with a Ctek. You'll be able to open the trunk from the inside without battery power from the back seat.

You are right the 12 volts system just needs to activate the hybrid system and there no real starter. However with that said there is a little concern as those post are limited to 100 amps ( I just went through this on a 2012 Prius c) and Incase the battery is in really had condition you may overload the system. The chances are slim but there is still a chance. And that 100 amp fuse is a pain in the next to change as it’s bolted in and works like a puzzle. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hMeCaMp7ybuzqZs.htmlsi=HuUOuJ4tpPRJeWKC

So I'm not sure what I did wrong or different but my key would not work after connecting the jumpers on the front battery as explained here. I could hear the energy going in but nothing happened. I just left the helping car on for like 10 minutes and then I heard the Prius turn on by itself. According to the battery icon inside the Prius the battery was fine. Maybe it was an issue with the key or the ignition?? In the end the key was working fine and so was my Prius so again, I'm not sure why my case was different.

Thanks for making and posting this video. My. 2013 Prius battery drained (parked after state issued "shelter in place" and let it sit for almost 50 days). I found another video (very limited) and it only showed using the front fuse box connection to jump start. I had read warnings about that approach so I put a trickle charger on for 24 hours and this morning it started without a jump. I had also read about driving the car for 30 minutes to charge up the battery. Since I used the trickle charger overnight I concluded the battery was likely fully charged. The question: even with using an overnight trickle charge would you ALSO recommend a 20-30 minute drive to charge up the battery? Thanks also for showing where to find the battery in back. I had looked back there but did not spot it, I will look again. I will use your strategy if I run into this again. I could not unlock the hatch due to the drained battery, now I realize I could have just used enough juice to be able to unlock the hatch. You gave very good video and audio coverage of this entire process. I will be watching your other videos.

I thought the Prius actually uses the hybrid battery to start the engine. The 12V battery is just to run the 12V systems. So putting the jumper cables on the terminal in the fuse box area would not result in a large current draw.

I followed these instructions this morning and now my battery in the back is making a high-pitched noise that last about five seconds and it’s doing it every two minutes. I called Toyota and they told me do not jump the battery from the back because it’s only a 12 V battery and it’s easy to put too much voltage on it. I will probably have to replace my battery now. They told me to jump it from the front.

Voltage is the same no matter when you connected, as to the amperage, it would be better to connect directly to rest battery then a small port on the front. Thank you sharing and I can see the logic is toyota making this statement.

Check all the fuses in the fuse box. Its very simple. Pop the hood, open the fuse box panel, and check all the fuses one by one. Inspect each of them carefully. One of them could be blown. If so, go to any car parts store and buy a replacement fuse. Make sure the fuse number matches if you do replace it. The number means amperage. In other words, how much power until the fuse breaks. Fuses exist to protect car's electrical systems if something goes wrong. It cuts the electricity if there is too much power going through the circuit.
