Randy had just returned to competition after a 2 year ban. He took the silver medal again! A frustrating experience throwing just 17cm below Gunthor.
Randy’s technique had not deteriorated much in the time off and had thrown a seasons best in this competition... twice!
Randy’s technique was based around Brian Oldfield and John Powell. His left foot twist out of the back and I suspect the low left arm both came from John. The throwing of the left arm ahead of the lower body out of the back came from Brian.
Out of the back he would keep his shoulders over his knees and squat down as he began the first turn. The weight would shift all the way onto the left leg as he would turn it all the way down into the center of the ring. He would leave the right leg to stretch behind creating a long whip. The right leg would sweep wide leading with the top of the thigh.
He did not step sideways as he entered the circle instead he would sprint forward and down hill with everything facing the sector when he was in the SA position. The left hand swept low and pulls to about 270° (180° being the direction of the throw). Here it would stall to allow the lower body to catch up and get ahead.
The right leg would come fast into the center of the circle. His leg would bend as it reached the middle. While he has focused on getting turned in middle you can see how he is not turning into himself with the right leg. He doesn’t back across the circle. The hips and the whole body pivot together in mid air before his right foot lands pointing at about 0°. The thighs squeeze together and the left leg does a little butt kick.
Because of the low left arm he creates a high point with the right elbow. This is an indication of shoulder position and good posture. He is not bending at the waist from one side to the other, his spine is neutral. His torso is leaned over the right foot as the left foot lands.
As his left foot hits, he begins to throw the left arm ahead of the shoulders. One of his biggest cues was getting the right hip turned into the throw. By focusing on this his right left/foot would turn all the way before he pushes with his legs.
Notice how his left arm doesn’t swing was high. He isn’t trying to get under the ball with his right shoulder. He spine remains neutral and the appearance of a high left arm is caused by him rotating around his spine while it it still tilted back over the right foot. He doesn’t bend at the waist meaning he comes through the finish level and stable pulling the shot around himself.
