For real. This guy was a silent killer. A single fastball made more sound than Randy did in his entire career. It’s awesome to hear him have a candid conversation.

I met the big unit when he was still with the Indianapolis Indians. That day they let kids on the field to run the bases and meet the players. Randy was pitching that day and my dad got his autograph for me and my brothers, still have it. Randy went up to the bigs not much longer after that day.

It sounds like he’s always had an interest even before he was playing, that must have been comforting knowing he had that in his back pocket for after baseball, he had a long fruitful career obviously but it doesn’t always work out that way.

Still remember watching him throw that pitch and hitting the bird! I was 14 yrs old, standing on the concourse, right behind the home plate seats. To me, it was the greatest baseball moment, from the greatest pitcher to play the game!

I don't remember Randy smiling this much in his whole career combined. What a great smile and laugh and attitude. I realize that he had to maintain his ever present scowl and demeanor in his role as a dominating pitcher, but I bet at home he was THIS person. Thank You, Randt, especially for all my AZ Diamondback memories, and a lifetime of unparalleled highlights and successes. What a guy!

Absolutely great. I was on JV at Cal High when our varsity team played Livermore. Got to see the game. Randy started and smoked our Varsity squad. I was blown away. Never seen anything like it. A god amongst boys.

It blows my mind that people seem to forget about this guy. I know he threw when Clemens, Maddux, Glavine threw but the Unit was something special. Greatest pitcher of my lifetime, hands down.

I heard a story several years ago that Randy had a big fan-boy moment, when he asked his favorite band, Rush, if he could photograph one of their concerts up close. Geddy Lee had a big fan-boy moment when he learned that Randy wanted to photograph them, and immediately said YES! It's always strangely surprising when a famous person in one profession turns into a fan-boy of a famous person in a different profession, and acts no different than the millions of non-famous in any profession fanboys do.

I WAS AT THAT GAME! I was stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona and myself, our Legal NCO, a fellow Admin guy, and myself went to the game. We were sitting behind the 1st base dugout. Jeff Kent picked it up, and asked if it got to take it's free base!!!

As a kid I always thought Randy was The Beast from the late 80’s CBS TV show Beauty and the Beast. Pat’s comment about the line of zebra’s. “Single file line, I’ll throw a baseball at your heads, ask the birds.” 😂

His personality is so different than what I thought it would be… he always looked so mean and pissed at the world when he was on the mound, I figured he was more of the brooding, man of few words types… He’s like a happy, super friendly guy.

I can't believe people still ask him about this. How about asking him about any of his 4800 plus strikouts, five Cy Youngs, pitching no hitters in both leagues, being the oldest to throw a perfect game. How the hell does a guy last that long in MLB as a starting pitcher. Or ask him what it was like to work with the Simpsons cast and crew. Thanks for bringing up the photography. As a retired guy who is also getting into the arts, this is a serious thing to us.
