Bernina sergers won’t sew, like every other serger, unless you make sure EVERYTHING IS JUST PERFECT. This quick video is to hopefully help you get yours sewing properly.

What a fantastic video. Thank you Randy. I have this machine (since 1990 or so). I believe that Juki made these machine for Bernina. It is identical in every way to the Juki 654. This is a fantastic machine.

@@trishkuberra5975 is the foot control housing made of metal or plastic? If metal, open it and see if a contact came loose inside. If it’s a plastic one, it has most likely failed and needs replaced. Often times you can test for a bad foot control by removing the two ends of the foot control cord from the control and touch them together, thus closing the circuit. If the motor then takes off, the foot control is bad and everything else is good.

It’s to all intents and purposes a Juki 654. They invented the domestic overlockers. Best one out there. Never had a bad one in 14 years of servicing. Still takes some people 3 attempts at cheap ones to realise that they should have bought good and saved the hassle and repair bills.

I agree 100 per cent. Seems like everyone always buys the wrong machine (or two) until they find the right one. The cheapest one is rarely the best, unless you buy a reconditioned classic. Sometimes the reviews are misleading, because rarely will someone admit they bought the wrong machine, and it’s not working out. They’ll just sit it in the corner and buy a better one, as they make their way up the price ladder. When they finally get to the good one, the value of the ones sitting in the corner usually exceeds the price of the good one. I’ve seen it firsthand, hundreds of times. It’s baffling to me, especially with the amount of information that’s at our fingertips online. 👍😎

I’m trying to figure out how to thread this thing I found at a thrift shop. My left needle thread is not catching at the loopy part. I recently watched a video that showed the rolled hem switch in a different position so maybe that’s my problem! I’ll try again!
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 Жыл бұрын
The rolled hem stitch is accomplished with one needle only. If you have the rolled hem foot and needle plate, just use the right needle only. If the left needle stitch isn’t locking, I would suspect there’s a problem with the needle itself. Make sure it’s the proper needle, make sure the long groove is facing to the front, the flat side is to the back if it has one. Sometimes the upper looper is out of adjustment so it doesn’t catch the left needle properly. Sometimes the thread is too tight or too loose to catch the thread properly. With a serger there are many variables. If you have a manual, follow it closely. Good luck 🍀

@@trishkuberra5975 if your serger has had a lot of use, the motor brushes could be in need of replacement. (Black carbon powder will be present on vent opening) To test for that, hold your foot down on the foot control and give the hand wheel a spin. If the motor stutters and tries to run: motor brushes need to be replaced. Or…. Press down on the foot control and wiggle the wire to the control and see if the motor responds at all. That would mean there’s a short in the cord. It’s usually at the foot control where the wire enters the foot control housing. That’s an easy fix by shortening the cord about six inches and removing the compromised area. If none of that works: bad foot control, bad motor, or something else perhaps. Good luck 🍀.

Hi Randy! Do you know what year(s) these were made? Any other vintage sergers you like?
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 Жыл бұрын
They were sold for many years through the eighties and nineties. They were made by Juki, so they’re available with many different name badges on them. The names are added as a decal in many cases. Any serger that you’re contemplating purchasing, will be a good choice if you see the label on the back that says “Juki Tokyo Japan”. Whether it’s a Bernina, or another brand name, look at the decal where it says MADE FOR instead of MADE BY.

I doubt very seriously that the timing is off unless you jammed it really hard while sewing. Check the big 3: 1) Thread 2))Threading 3) Needles Correct thread on tapered spools. Absolutely, positively, assuredly, convincingly, threaded perfectly. Not close or good enough, but ON. THE. MONEY. PERFECTLY. Make sure your needles are the correct needle for your machine. Make sure they are brand new and fresh out of the package. Make sure the needles are installed properly. The reason I only service and repair sergers, and don’t EVER SELL THEM, is because the achievement curve is really a 90 degree angle. It’s a hard climb for almost everyone.

Yes. Get a Schmetz STRETCH needle in a size 14. Or a Singer model 2045 in size 14. Both are designed to eliminate skipping stitches. If that doesn’t solve it, you need a timing adjustment.

I rarely buy sergers unless they’re a vintage Singer 14 U 33 or similar. They are bulletproof and perfect. What city are you in with a waiting period that long? The most machines I serviced and repaired IN ONE SINGLE DAY WAS 32. At the Singer Service center, every mechanic had to fix a minimum of ten per day. We could fix 15 a day if we wanted to. Looks like your guy should put on a pot of coffee and get caught up. Or, is he the son, grandson, or the new guy who just bought the biz and is learning “on the job”. Most likely it’s a foot control or motor brushes if you’ve used it quite a bit. Does yours have the safety shut off if the front flap is opened? If so, you might want to check to be sure that the flap is closed securely. Maybe even give it a juggle with your foot on the control to see if it sputters into activity. Could be the safety switch.

Hi! I have a 334D and am trying everything I can but can’t seem to get it to make a stitch. :-( I’m sure it’s something I’m doing or not doing. Tried new needles, retreated a million times and read the manual. I’m doing something wrong.

@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 5 ай бұрын
When you say you’ve threaded it a million times, that tells me it’s threaded wrong. When you know how to tie your shoes, for example, you just tie them and you’re done. Once. Because you know there’s one way and you’ve learned it. Same with a serger. It will thread a million wrong ways, but only one way that’s correct. Every serger that I service for a customer is misthreaded. They’re hard to thread correctly. As far as the needle, make sure it’s the correct system, as well as size. The system would be 15x1 or 2054. Yours will take a 15x1. Make sure they are brand new and install them with their flat sides to the rear. Use serger thread that’s on a cone. If you have an owners manual, that will be easier to double check. Good luck.

Always check the big three: 1) thread 2) Threading 3)Needle Be sure you’re using the proper thread on the cones, that’s made for sergers. Be sure that the serger is threaded properly. Not just kinda, or close enough. It has to be perfect. Be sure the needles are correct and BRAND NEW. I would suspect that it’s a mis-threading issue. 99% of the time it’s a threading issue. My customers say, “but I threaded it over twenty times, one of those had to be correct”. NO. NOPE. NAH. NADA. The number of ways that you can mis-thread a serger is infinitesimal. ( a lot) Hopefully you have a threading diagram to help. Make sure all your tension knobs are in a middle range number. 3,4, or 5. The needle threads are generally on 5 while the looper threads are on 3 or 4. Make sure that the threads are pulled into the tension discs and not just laying on the edges of the discs. Try all that and see if that helps. 👍😎

There are many areas throughout that serger that need to be oiled, in order to keep it running smoothly. If any one of the oiling points go dry, the machine will lock up. You probably need to take it in for service, or get your tools and oil and start oiling. Anything that moves by rotating, pivoting, or sliding, gets oiled. Just don’t get oil on the motor or the belts. Good luck.
