I would prefer the hybrid system was matched with the 3L diesel. That would allow diesel economy on the open road and electric use in built up areas. In the arrangement shown most of the open road will be on the buzzy I4, and a high powered 2L I4 is not going to be economical in a heavy SUV.

I see it similar as a highly upgraded & more capable Outlander PHEV. I think the I-Pace is more special given it is full electric & Jaguar looks a bit more classy for road-use, but the Range Rover will be more off-road capable & better for heavy duty like towing.

This powertrain might just save Landrover - if it is reliable (something they are not known for). Sales of diesel models in the UK is plummeting with JLR announcing redundancies at it’s UK plants - partly due to the possibility of diesel bans in 2020 in some urban areas.

Read my nightmare with RR before buying one.New 2020 RR PHEV I bought 3 months ago from Official dealer in GA had orange engine light turned on when I came back home, still turned on after 3 times back to dealer service with changing different parts. Now has been at service 4th time for last month and they said that all this model cars in the world will be recalled for new hybride software that will be ready at the end of September 2020. 3 months after buying a new very expensive car, still stuck to service. Dealer said that JLR refused replacement because any car they replace will need the same software update all p400e models in the world will be recalled. JLR used my car as a lab to find a common defect but still not replaced or refunded.

4-cylinder in such a big and heavy car? OK, it's a hybrid powertrain but still, a 4-cylinder sounds a bit meh for a car like this! Doesn't it feel a bit overstressed some times? I mean, even BMW changed to a 6-cylinder for their i-Performance version of the 7er!

You would be surprised the hybrid motor significantly improves performance because it offers 100hp+ power boost, and you get less turbo lag and faster gear shift as the electric motor assists in downshift/upshift time.

If you start in electric mode and you stay in electric mode, the ICE (internal combustion engine) stays cold (especially in the winter). If you then go to the sport mode with a cold engine and ask for full power from the ICE, the engine might limit the power to protect itself. To use sport mode you first need to use hybrid mode for a couple of minutes to warm the engine a bit. Then you'll get full power and a smooth experience.

88K Euro and just look at the misalignment of the rear door at 2.30. The charger door is also so flimsy :-( For such a price JLR should employ some better quality control measures and think about important items, such as rear seat legroom (which seems sadly lacking). The electronics on the dashboard look nice, but I wouldn't want to live with this car out of warranty.

No insult to Thoms he gives calming detailed reviews, but I don't think he really understands the point of a hybrid and how best to use it. After 3 years in a Volvo hybrid, I think I know a thing or two. Thru the city suburbs drive EV mode. Thru Downtown-City drive EV mode. On the open highway or expressway drive gas unless you are traveling less than 15 miles then use either standard or EV only. Bumper to bumper on the highway use the standard mode and let the car work it out. People who travel less than 30 miles all day every day can leave the car in EV or Standard mode. Do what I tell you and you will be filling gas tank once a month or once every other month. That is the difference between owning an ICE car vs Hybrid model. You want to maximize your EV mode as much as possible. I'm sure there are others who know more than I do. Car needs to be plugged in every night. I spoke to my neighbor who owns the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid. He's in agreement on when to switch to different modes.

I guess if you could commute 20 miles and then slow charge during the day then that’s ideal, but does this car make sense for commuting? Not really. If you can afford a car like this, then presumably you could also have a Smart EQ like mine for commuting and that would make a lot more sense. And also, I can’t stand when these PHEVs turn the engine on when you don’t want them to. It should only turn on if you want it to or the charge is low.
@sgtc4538
@sgtc4538 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, good for commuting (a short distance) if charged each end. Though I think it was Thomas who told us that a lot of PHEV owners never bother to get plug in, they just get the tax, and 'city' access advantages, I guess. But I also guess if you're rich (you need to be for this P400e!), and have a family, and often charge down autobahns for miles at the weekends maybe, it would be more suitable than a Smart ED, even a Smart ED Cabrio (a great car!).
@christill
@christill 5 жыл бұрын
sgtc 4 Yeah well I meant get both and then you wouldn’t have to deal with a big car commuting when you’re on your own. Or just get an eNiro for all the time. Very good car. And also it was found in the U.K. that many PHEVs that were bought as company fleet cars were not being charged at all as employees had fuel cards anyway and didn’t care to charge them up using their own electricity. So yeah, just for tax breaks and not because they care about sustainability even the tiniest bit.
@sgtc4538
@sgtc4538 5 жыл бұрын
yes, eNiro quite nice, but I also like Kona Electric (more compact, HUD!). Yeah, tax breaks, eh! Sustainability? That's a harder question. You have to buy a used car without a computer or electronics anywhere, and that forever into the 'unforeseeable future' is easy to fix and keep going! Old Land Rover 90, anyone?
@christill
@christill 5 жыл бұрын
sgtc 4 My doctor told me he converted an old Land Rover to run on LPG. He thinks that is the most sustainable. I’m not an expert but I would really like scientists and engineers to tell me once and for all exactly how everything stacks up. I suspect that a new EV powered by renewable energy will be best by a significant margin based on reports I’ve seen. But I would really like a definitive answer so we can all move forward with no more FUD. And I also like the Kona more but compared to a Range Rover an eNiro makes a bit better comparison.
@sgtc4538
@sgtc4538 5 жыл бұрын
You're right Chris - which drive-train? Which energy? It's not simple. "Horses for courses". Scientists & engineers will debate amongst themselves which is best! CNG? Agree, about eNiro. Cheers.

What is a shame is to see some of the comments below. Commenting crap about the car without knowing anything about it is sad to see. The car just came out but there are people already talking nonsense about the electronics... range rovers once were unreliable. Nowadays they can’t afford to be that unreliable, and by the way there are German cars that go to the workshop once or twice a month according to some surveys! If you don’t have the knowledge to comment, just don’t!

Not in terms of technology or reliability. I like the design, but the quality sucks big time... even now in 2019...

I am from NA and i still think that this range rover looks like the ford escape. and the ford escape is not a very desirable suv. i would prefer the range rover hse sport

And people were fining that American pickup stupid. This here has a similar size, with the inside and trunk size of a Yaris.

-> if it was profitable to save the planet, it would have happened already. PHEVs are a way to use more money to reduce the emissions as much as possible until the EVs and their infrastructure make them usable in all situations (daily commute and long trips). it's also clever, because with a hybrid you see how long the engine can be turned off in the real life driving (red lights and city traffic). it would be a pity not to use the energy recuperation and it's a shame we haven't been doing it for such a long time. also, the emissions are much better in the city with a charged PHEV. I don't want me and my children to breathe near regular ICE cars when their engine is running. anyone who can afford a PHEV, should buy one. or at least a regular hybrid. for tens of thousands of years, the human race is getting its energy from burning things. PHEVs are a good start in changing that. the economy should see that more electric energy is being used for transportation and see the incentive to produce more energy in an emissions free way. when we see that something is hurting us (like the climate change/catastrophe), we must stop doing it even if we have been doing it for ages (literally). I'm very proud of the EU for imposing the new emissions rules and of the manufacturers for finally giving us the option to go emissions free as much as possible according to our lifestyle.

At starting price of 79000 dollars !!?? And with 19 miles of electric range who is buying this car considering the starting price of a range rover sport is 69000 dollars !!!!! This car is only for people who are interested in the plugin hybrid technology. Having said that in the early 2030s it will easily surprise 50 miles of electric range thereby making more sense to the general range rover sport buying demographic.

This vehicle looks too much like the American Ford Exploder, I mean, Explorer. I appreciate LR trying to be innovative. I wish they would focus on making their vehicles more reliable.

As Range Rover have been using the basic design for their 4x4's since the early 70's,if there is any copying,it would on Fords part.Enough of the Range Rover unreliability nonsense.The new Discovery has just won the prestigious Car of the Year award at What Car.
