Towing tests are so varied that no two are the same. We hooked up an enclosed car trailer to the Ford F-150 Lightning Extended Range to see how far we could go towing with the #FordLightning #electrictruck. The F-150 Lightning XLT Extended Range is rated at 320 miles unloaded, and we towed a 7,000 pound enclosed #trailer through some kinda-mountainous terrain.

Don't forget you may get one or two updates over the air or via dealer that will improve many things sometimes. My Mach E got a killer charge rate increase among other improvements and fixes. I wouldn't be surprised if the Lightning gets towing and other range improvements as well. Might be a good idea to cover on your channel if/when those come in.

Oh, for sure. But while that may come (and we'll re-test if it does) we wanted to focus on what people can buy now. Ford and several other brands have been able to add range to their EVs via OTA so maybe they can do something with these, too. Never know!

Great review. This use case is similar to what I’m used to. Would have to learn where the DCFCs are but overall I think something like this first Gen EV Lightning would suit my needs fairly decently with just an extra 30 minutes here and there for recharging on such trips.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
PlugShare.com or the PlugShare app make finding chargers super easy, and you can set minimum charge speed so you skip the 50 kW "DCFC" stations that can't charge vehicles like this at their full speed - unless you really need one.

They're separate options on the Build & Price tool, and while most vehicle loans tend to arrive fully loaded, this was a pretty basic XLT. Nice to have that for once! There is (or was) a more loaded Lariat in our area for loans as well, but demand to review them is so high that we didn't get to pick which one we received.

It would've been cutting it SO close and there was an 80s cover band performing that night. So being stuck on the side of the road with a dead battery was not an idea of a good time!

These videos help a lot to show real world usage. I'm hoping to get my email to order in the next few months and the towing range is my only concern. I'd like to get a nice enclosed trailer someday but the open deck works just fine for me for now. All my tracks are about 150-200 miles max so probably one extra stop just to make sure I have enough juice at the track if I need it. I think in the next few years we'll get more chargers along more common highways and it won't be as much of an issue, concern really. I always tell people that for 5-10 track days I'd like to do a year the extra stop here and there is worth it for the 90% of the time it's just me going to work and running errands in a EV truck.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! Assuming you buy an Extended Range truck, you'd likely be fine with the range given your use and an open trailer. And, can likely recharge at the track on a 240V socket though it won't be as fast as DCFC. Totally agreed on the landscape changing in the next ten years, it will make EV road trips even easier than they are now and doubly so for trucks.

Cool video, I've been trying to get a judge of how realistic the advertised ranges on the website are. You mentioned getting around 2.2 miles per kilowatts before adding the trailer, how long was that for and what style of driving?
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
That was for a few hundred miles - call it 220 to 250, something like that - and a mix of legitimate city (Washington DC) and suburban/highway.

Thanks for the review. I currently tow my 22ft Airstream Travel trailer with my F150 Sport and as my other car is a small EV (Leaf) I'm interested in having the Lightning as a tow vehicle . Seems like even the extended range option won't cut it for camping trips in California. Disappointing as the gas prices are not showing any sign of decreasing anytime soon.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed! Yeah, EV trucks are really not going to cut it for longer-distance towing for some time still. The battery tech isn't there for the required energy density. Keep in mind, the extended-range Lightning has as much energy on board as a gas F-150 with four gallons in the tank. So, you won't be able to tow very far with 4 gallons of 87 either. Until things evolve, have you considered an F-150 PowerBoost hybrid? It's a really impressive drivetrain.

Do you have to unhitch your tow to get into the charger If "somebody says anything"? I can refuel my truck in five minutes. I have an auxiliary fuel tank installed. I can also carry fuel cans for off road exploring. How do you recharge 100 miles into an over land adventure?
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you're going to be polite, you should unhook if you're blatantly in the way. Which is super annoying and time-consuming. It's a fundamental flaw in the design of most EV charging stations right now, they need to be set up like fuel pumps where you can pull through. We've seen a few like that but nowhere near the majority. For off-road, some companies (Rivian and Jeep, notably) are installing chargers that bank power from solar panels near trailheads so you can charge up, albeit slowly, if needed. Overlanding would be a tricky situation right now if you're towing a trailer. If not - 300ish miles is attainable and hopefully there'd be chargers along your route if going farther than that. Check out PlugShare.com to see any potential routes you're hypothesizing about.
@JamesWilliams-cc1ow
@JamesWilliams-cc1ow Жыл бұрын
@@OutMotorsports I hope the charging situation for towed loads is considered. I will tell you that the idea of bringing charging stations and infrastructure to support them into wild areas, even if solar powered, will be an eyesore and unwelcome in wilderness areas. Let's keep the wild areas that remain wild and unmarred by charging stations, solar panels and windmills. Either build in the battery range to the vehicle, carry a spare battery or stay in the suburbs.

Obviously the price breakdown will be different for everyone but on this trip how much did the electricity cost you vs what you would have spent in gas?
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
We used Electrify America chargers which have different rates depending which state you are in. In Virginia, it was 43¢ per kWh for us as we are not a "Pass+" member (because we don't daily drive an EV). Pass+ members would only pay 31¢ per kWh. Our driving saw us charge from about 25% to 90% and that would cost roughly $36 at the 43¢ rate, or $26 at the cheaper EA Pass+ rate. Ford was kind enough to include some free kilowatts with our loan so we did not spend any money on this test. But, it required filling up once before towing and once at the Sheetz shown in the video, and would have cost roughly $51 if we were owners and Pass+ holders.

@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
Considered doing that! But really wanted to get the hilly route you saw in the video, and it wasn't guaranteed that we'd make it all the way home if we didn't stop. Chargers aren't common enough where we went to alleviate the concern of a dead battery with trailer attached... not worth the risk. But, we feel that the trip was a good representation of how the Lightning tows and quick math gets an accurate enough range estimate.
@uhjyuff2095
@uhjyuff2095 Жыл бұрын
I take it you started the trip with 99 to 100 percent charge and ended with 44 percent with a trip of exactly 60.0 miles? Edit: Checked the footage frame by frame and you started with 3208.4 and ended with 3267.9 which equals 59.5 miles. But I still don't know what percent charge you started with?
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
We started at 90% - the charge curve slows a good amount (as with all EVs) above 80 and while it would've been nice to get it to 100 to make for easier math, didn't have a ton of interest in sitting even longer to wait. So, 46% to go 59.5 miles = 0.99 mi/kWh or a max range of 129.7 miles if the math extrapolates properly and you use the same trailer and route we did in similar temperatures :-)

I have the Lariat Extended range, and pull my Pontoon Boat on steel trailer. so far the few little trips I've taken, Ye I can see an instant drop in Miles per Kwh. Ive also noticed that it is WAY dependent on speed. the slower 40s I do around my area, i still show 1.1.... 1.2 sometime a little more. if I go 55.. it drops.. 60 it drop[s even more. realistically, its not a long haul tow machine... but neither was the original lightning, or dodge SRT 10, or any performance minded "truck" back in the day.. so when you think about it, the fact we can even tow at all, and have the abilities this truck has, with pro power on board, intelligent back up power etc. etc.. in an Electric truck.. is a pretty big step forward technologically speaking.

Ford also made a truck called the F150 "Harley Davidson" which came out in 2001. That truck was more close to what your Lightning EV would be compared to. The harley davidson model was a supercrew shortbed f150 with a detuned supercharged 5.4l v8. Was it as fast as your Lightning EV? No. But it could tow a trailer without running out of gas!!!

Why is it normalized to drive a F**KING trailer at +5 over the speed limit. The norm should be 5 below for safety sake.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
We tow at the speed limit and occasionally up to +5 as indicated on the video, should posted limits be up to 65 mph. Where posted limits are 70 or higher, 70 is about the max we're comfortable with and generally more like 65. It's safe if the trailer is maintained, properly loaded with appropriate tongue weight, and is using quality trailer tires at correct PSI and not too old. California limits vehicles with trailers to 55 mph no matter what. We are not in California. We've had exactly zero incidents or moments of concern while towing this trailer with a huge variety of vehicles properly loaded, but thank you for the feedback.

Great video. I know people trash talk the EV F-150, but the reality is, people aren't buying this to tow their trailers across America. It's used for commuting (it's nice to have a commuter in a truck version), daily tasks, and occasional close hauling to the boat ramp, dirt bike park, home depot, etc.. If people think they want an EV truck to travel across America towing a trailer, it's obviously better done with a gas truck to save a lot of time, and about $30K on the truck price assuming you buy a Lariat. To each their own, but I believe the battery technology will only get better and I can't wait to see these trucks get 300 miles of range towing and 600 miles without.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's a perfect truck for *many* buyers. Long-distance towing is not there yet and may never be there, honestly. But I know a lot of folks who have either bought one of these or are on the list to order and it'll fill all of their needs and then some. Same for the Rivian R1T.
