A buddy gave me a piece of advice before I went to Ranger School - never be last doing anything. Never be the last to finish chow, on the graded runs or the ruck march up Mt. Yonah. You don't have to be first, but never ever be last! That was sage advice!

I spent 10 weeks with CPT Daniel Fahey (a.k.a. Gritty Soldier) at a military school. He is indeed a physical monster, but he's also a scholar and gentleman of the highest order.

The only prep I did for ranger school 18 years ago was show up. But as standard coming from Italy my bags were lost. Nothing like trying to do a layout with no gear haha. My bags showed up 5 days later. Picked grass out of rocks and polished brass in the Ranger hall of fame for the next three weeks. Straight through ranger school. 18 years later I'm still hungry 😂😂😂

Thankyou Sir for your inspiration and positive feedback. My name is Paul Hunter, I'm 58 years old and from the west coast of Scotland. Unfortunately due to ill health I never made it to the military side of life. Once or twice a week depending on my health, I have a limited hike near to where I live and brandish military clothng and backpack and discover woods, forests, ravines, rivers and streams. It's such an experience for me and arriving home I am totally exhaused that I sleep right away but it's theraputic and being outside is wonderful. There are days however when I'm not possible to go as often as i like, but to me, the days I am outside is physically draining as if it were Ranger training, pushing myself, trying to cope as best as i can and every day i'm out there it's tough. Thankyou again for the inspiration, sometimes motivation can work wonders and watching your video with your attitude and seemingly lust for life has inspired me to keep going. Keep safe. Kind regards, Paul.

Ranger Class 4-83, though I started with 3-83. Mountains, twice. My dad was 11-58. Everything you advise here is similar to what we heard back then and a LOT like what my dad said. Control what you can control before you get there. Packing list; great point. Don't train to finish anything, train to be able to go beyond any "finish line". Do the water tests in a pool at home so much before you go that it's no problem when that moment comes. This is good stuff, esp. tied in with the 5 reasons you'll fail video. The muscle to develop the most before going is between the ears. Definitely be a good Ranger, ask for heavy things. It may not be "rewarded" except with 'suck' but it's the right thing to do.

@davidparmly8828
@davidparmly8828 Жыл бұрын
@@joseMartinez-zt7tk It’s HIGHLY probable that you will fail. The course is designed for you to fail. “What you fail at, when you fail, how many people does your failure take with it, and who else knows that you failed “ are the questions that we don’t know right now. I failed at many things, some of which we apparent enough that I needed to recycle The Mountains with only an 8-hour break between cycles. But I failed at many more things that were known only to me, or only to my Ranger Buddy, or only to my squad. The same is true for everyone. It is in those moments of failure that you learn the most about yourself, as a man, as a soldier, as a leader of soldiers. Control the failure as much as is humanly possible, harm as few people as possible when you do, preferably only yourself. And learn a lesson in each failure. Thus endeth the lesson.

Very valuable insight!! I appreciate the advice and I know this will be useful for many others also. You did mention that it is not necessary to be an infantry tactics expert....however what advice/tips do you have on RTTs and Land nav?
@GrittySoldier
@GrittySoldier 4 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to be a land nav expert, but you do need to have a strong understanding of the basics (I.e. plotting grids, obtaining and following azimuths, reading a map with elevation changes, terrain association). As far as RTTs go, there is an app called RangerPro that is very useful. It has videos of actual RIs going over each tested RTT by the Ranger standard, so if nothing else, at least look at that.

They do a two-week Xmas exodus. If you are a winter ranger, you’ll get essentially a two-week vacation in between phases. It’s good because your body can heal and can put some weight back on, but bad because you loose a little bit of what you learned and the “Ranger mindset” is hindered...

Thank you for this - really awesome content. Extremely relevant, and helpful advice. Can you speak to any recommendations you have on sewing on name/US Army tapes/cateyes to uniforms and TA-50 prior to day zero at Ranger School? My assumption there is that guys in the NG/Reserve (going through the RTAC pipeline) who get a slot and go down use their own home-unit TA-50 throughout the course rather than Benning-issue? Im also assuming that the correct approach is to bring all the uniforms/PCs on the packing list with sewed on tapes/cateyes (but not ranks) as well as sewed on tapes/cateyes on all TA-50 (plus extra tapes/fabric/sewing kit/thimble/etc if stuff tears off or you get issued different TA-50 in Benning). Do most guys you know normally sew all this stuff on by hand or buy a sewing machine to save money? (if so, a particular thread type or fishing line?) Or just spend money to have the dry cleaner on post do all the sewing?

I was 33 when I did Ranger and had no issues. I actually felt like I had an advantage because I knew more about what my body could or could not do than 20-somethings. Also, regarding the packing information. Is this something you get to do once you're enlisted and finished with basic? or if you're signing up with an option 40, you're expected to have this sourced out? I'm looking to get into the medical side. Would anything change? I assume no. Once again, thanks for your time
@GrittySoldier

I would go ahead and start looking into getting some boots that can be used in the service (complaint to AR 670-1 regs). You might as well start rucking with “the real thing” to help your feet get used to it. Don’t stress the packing list now, you’ll have time to figure that out once your in and once you actually obtain a date for Ranger School. You won’t be expected to have it sourced out until you have a slot.

Getting through RAP week is the hardest part for most, that is where the majority of failures will happen, anywhere from 25-50%. If you are prepared physically for RAP week, and are mentally ready to handle being at Ranger for a “minimum” of 61 days, you stand a good chance of passing.

Thanks for the video. Please what is the injury rate? Am looking at attending RS but someone advices me to get my OCS done first before Ranger school cos there’s a huge possibility of injury. I’m currently E5.

In the process of getting in now, my recruiter said that I’ll most likely fail out of ranger school & RASP due to lack of military experience/knowledge if I join as 11B with option 40 in my contract. He said to try for rangers/RASP after I’m in the Army for a year or so to gain experience first. Is this the best move instead of getting option 40 and going for RASP right away? I keep reading that nothing is guaranteed with these schools unless it’s in your contract. Thank you for all of your videos, they’ve been really helpful.
@GrittySoldier
@GrittySoldier 2 жыл бұрын
That’s right it’s not guaranteed. You’ll hear that a lot, to go into the reg army first to gain experience then try out for RASP/Ranger. But I think it’s best to just go for it. If you do fail the first time, the. You’ll go to the reg army until you can go try again. Long story short, you lightly as well give it a shot right away.

You can let fear stop you from trying. If you really think about it, the very worst thing that could happen is you fail the first try, but then you’ve learned valuable lessons that would make you even more prepared for the next attempt. If you keep trying, eventually you will conquer your goal.

Hey man I got a question 2 things really the first thing is since you can do ranger school in rotc what happens if you need to recycle and 2 as an officer is it possible to get a contract with rasp 2? Edit: forgot to ask but also is it correct that there is a water confidence course and what does it entail
@GrittySoldier
@GrittySoldier 3 жыл бұрын
First yes the is a water confidence course. It’s jumping in with full equip, taking it off, a 25m swim in full uniform and a zip line. None of it is bad at all. RASP 2 is something you’ll need to apply for after PL time. I am not sure about recycling in rOTC, I guess if it conflicts with going back to school, then you’d just fail Ranger... try not to recycle 🤷‍♂️

Also the stress of when you’re being graded in a leadership position. Doesn’t matter if you have the heaviest ruck, climbing the tallest mountain or going thru the deepest swamp, none of that compares to the mental stress.

It's incredibly tempting. I just have to make sure my body, my mind and my wife (home life) is ready and that my wife is on board with my choice. Her brother (he's two years older than me) is a West Point Grad, top twenty ranger comp finalists, works the for state department in a high-end job, (just as a reference.) I know she understands what he went through I'm just not sure if she believes in me yet. I got some work to do if I want to go this path. It's either Warrant officer school on the pathway to Army Flight school or Rangers. I can do both. I'm not doubting myself, I've always worked hard for what I wanted in life. I'm not an expert either. Because of your KZfaq channel I can become more confident in making a choice. The more I learn about the Army it becomes more clear that, if you have a will there can be a way. If you're willing to commit to the job. I really, really like that... I'm new to this culture.
