Join Nick Zararis and Andrew Chelney as they dive deep into the New York Rangers' uncertain future. For the Rangers to improve the roster, they likely would need to subtract a piece from what's already a thin team. With the Rangers staking so much of their championship window on young players matriculating in with close to no learning curve, is the organization genuine in its message of cup or bust?

The personnel isn’t the problem. It’s the strategy and mindset, the team game and support of players without the puck on the ice, the lack of situational awareness in what play is the best play to make. Lav’s philosophy is we need to play like it’s the playoffs all year round. They didn’t do that. They found ways to win based on goaltending, timely goal scoring, a strong PP and PK, come from behind wins. There were few games when they outplayed teams and won games, where they were structurally disciplined, and consistent. It’s been 1 year since they implemented this. And they didn’t do it as well as they could, while also winning the President’s trophy.

Totally agree with this. But whats it going to take for them to play the right style? Or is it just too hard/physically taxing? Maybe there is a reason that not many play like the canes and the panthers. I have been paying attention to hockey really closely for 2 years (before it was just playoffs) and it just looks like talented players don't want to work hard because of the brutality of the game. Everything feels like they are trying to max out their long term risk/reward with being able to earn. It is the smart thing to do after all, but it must take a toll on their mental health (e.g. miserable to lose at a professional level). I am not just referring to the rangers too. It feels like all the highly talented circus juggler type (read: leafs) across the league are like this, except for those on teams like the panthers, canes, etc.

@@gbs54321 I think they are very dependent on their top players, and need to get more from role players. I know some say those top players didn’t show up in the ECF, but that’s when depth needs to come through. I think to play the style of game similar to the teams you mentioned, it has to be a complete team game, and players have to buy into the style of game that suits the team. I think the PP2 needs to improve. The team also just needs to commit themselves to a smart defensive game, turn that defense to offense. Protect leads. Not let up first goals. I think Zib’s line has to find their game 5v5, he and Kreider are great on the PK. For some reason that style isn’t translating to their line. They need a solid RW to give some identity to the line. There’s much more, I’m rambling.

@@Royale_withcheeze This is an interesting holistic answer that accounts for more than just "will" - which is the tldr on what I was saying - appreciate the response!

The big problem the Rangers have is their 5v5 play, specifically in the offensive zone with the puck, and in the defensive zone to limit chances and win the puck back.

Lavs' best year is always his first year. Not using the Aces and not going full "Next Man Up" after seeing one game of less-than level from any injured player is a coaching fail.

Great Video, as usual, guys. I had gone through this a couple of times, because, I had Kidney Stone removed & am on some Painkillers. I kind of agree with what you guys are saying, but, I think that the problem is that Fans & The Team are repeating the Same Mistakes over & over again. While we need to keep these Core Players, we need to surround them with a more of the Rounded Type Of Players That Compliment Them & That Allows Us To Roll All Lines In A More Even Way (Upper Case is being more vocal). I think, that, Barclay Goodrow & so many of the other players need to move up & down the lineups, given the circumstances & the time of year. This is one of the main reasons that I wanted to see Kris Knabloch coach the team. Peter Laviollette is the great & proven coach, but, Knabloch is the guy who knew all of these young players & would've been better at utilizing them. He had more likely been the guy who'd have known what to do with so many guys who came up from The Hartford Wolf Pack. Let me know what you think

start with the goalie , leave him be. Shesty. Then move unto the D. We need defence that does not let goals and backs up Shesty . Right now defence is mediocre. The offence is decent.

@@Kappadon1226 yes. agreed. I think also has a part of ticket sales. Everyone looks at how bombastic of a player it is when they are coming in if they are genius scorers. But very few players get the recognition they deserve as high profile players that are sole role players , not really dirty but reall'y good defenceman and great at handling the puck in the blue line. reading plays. Anticipating rushes from the opposite team.

One example of what I'm here talking about is now everyone is talking Brady Tkachuk/doing a Buyout on Jacob Trouba. I'm thinking of packaging them in A Trade, rather. This is A Safety Factor, so, if Brady Tkachuk is a problem here, it's at the very least, A Wash (from what I've heard some say, Salary/Years are the same).

The Rangers & (the fans) essentially are experiencing 1994 from the Devils' perspective this year. The Devils would've no doubt beat Vancouver, but they were the second best team in the ECF. We just need to have the Rangers replicate that next season that Jersey did...

Can the Rangers put a package together, Shesterkin plus xFW or Trouba, for a Barkov plus #1 D? And would that be SC level?

Is it me, or, was Tom Renney or Alain Vigneault the last Ranger Coach to Run All Of The Lines On A More Even Basis? Let me know, but, I think that I'm right about one of those lines.

Rangers Fans need to so calm down about things. Zibanejad is having one less than stellar season, Kreider is MIA at many times, but, still puts up great numbers (Ditto with Panarin in The Non-Regular Season - it's going to happen because the teams play tighter after The Regular Season is over, which is why I think that you think so many more evenly balanced 4 lines after The Regular Season is over/even during The Whole Season). Let me know what you think

Ultimately, they've all got to do some figuring out what to do so Zibanejad, Kreider, Panarin & some others stay, but, with more Team Friendly Contracts, according to the Full Season & maybe to their diminished role & TOI. Moreover, we've got to stop making these guys better than they are. I'd say it was the fact David Quinn called it right about The Kid Line, being very good, but not Gretzky, Kurri & Messier. We've got to Draft So Much Better, too & as you say, not have players that do much better on other teams playing bad for The Rangers. Let me know what you think

The Rangers need Bottom 6 to be players that can step up & be in Top 6 as Playmakers for after The Regular Season. The Rangers need Evan Rodrigues type player, not Blake Wheeler

Zibanejad wasn't good defensively in the Florida series. If that's the argument people are making for him, it's a pretty weak one.

Chytil is soft, can’t win faceoffs, can’t defend, not a bottom 6 guy you win a cup with. Zac Jones is tiny, we need big defenseman who play hard. We need a bottom 6 with guys who play heavy. The trick is to put three guys on a line who play similar so they find chemistry…. Vesey can’t hit the net. Our bottom 6 should be Cuylle, Goody, Othmann, Rempe, Edstrom, and another experienced player. You can even get away with having Vesey on the 4th line if you have these guys in the bottom 6. Zac Jones, Brett Berard, Kakko, Chytil are all guys the Rangers need to move on from.
