Great content! Would be interesting to see something involving the women’s teams as well! Although, unfortunately probably not as easy to curate.

Considering how good England under 20s are each year do Premiership academy's drive their development back? France and Ireland seem to pull U20s players into senior rugby very successfully where as England have the odd player but not 2 or 3 every year like France or Ireland

The competition and player pool in England and the Premiership is far bigger than any other in the Northern Hemisphere at least, so the transition between academy to club team to international isn't always plain sailing as there are just so many players either coming through or getting signed by the respective clubs... It's an interesting point though!

@@youngrugby The player pool is big not sure about the competition though I know guys who couldn't get provincial contacts or where never in any Leinster age grade squads but have managed to get pro deals with Premiership clubs.

Odd this randomly came up in my feed today.. Just after Northampton did indeed, field a back line of only academy graduates...winning by a single point against Newcastle..

Academy’s are literally killing rugby in England

Could you explain? You mean its a money drain?
@ILoveBikesMind

@@henryherbert RFU levels now contain second teams & other 1st teams are struggling to field teams, this pretty much driven by a dwindling player base. Take Gloucester for example, their under 18’s, 21’s and 23’s all play on Saturdays regularly. That’s 60+ local young quality players not playing for local clubs. Considering most clubs are struggling with front row and games are often abandoned because of no front row, that’s approx. 18 front row unavailable for local rugby. And this goes for the opposing teams too, so that’s 120+ players not playing local rugby around the country. Multiple that by all the other academy games that take place and you’re looking at hundreds of players out of local rugby. Not to mention that a fairly good percentage of players that do not end up with contracts at a premiership club quit rugby all together because of not making it. Academies might be good for the professional game but as that’s a fucking mess too with no money in it, look at Worcester and Wasps, that will be less players getting professional contracts which will have a knock on effect to grassroots. If there is no good route to professionalism, those lads might take up another sport. Most lads good enough to play professionally in one sport are generally half about at other sports.
