I did a photography course with Rankin many years ago, it lasted about four seconds, he picked up my camera and said 'you look through here and you press that' then walked out of the room.

Yeah... that's true. I'm working as a fashion photography assistant and here it's more important to have good relations,contacts and a good team and a sense of fashion than your own skills as a photographer. The masters of fashion photography nowadays are great bussines and public relations men, not masters of photography and lighting. And this Rankin, he's not even close to be a master but just a big photographer in UK.

With regards to this camera vs photographer arguement I think I'm going to say that there is a half-way point. Ideas come first, because you can't do anything with a camera if you don't have ideas, but they go hand in hand, because if you plan on creating a certain image then you need a camera that will enable you to do so, but even then, it is heavily focussed on the other things like lighting, scenery etc!

If you think photography is about what camera you're using and you don't appreciate and/or understand the importance of style, substance, lighting and all the other things that make a good photo, then you are and always will be (unless you learn to change) an amateur! If that's all you want to be, fair enough, but if you want to compete at the top, you're going to have to do better than rock up with a 1Ds Mk3 and declare yourself the champion. Because you WILL lose to someone with a compact.

Ha this is actually the most pointless argument ever. Everyone is free to their opinions so just leave each other be. Fair enough if you're trying to get a point across but many people nowadays are too arrogant to change. Unfortunately she lacks a vision and a reason why she's taking the pictures. All the best equipment in the world, and the opinion of "master photographer" Rankin (doubtful) does nit make a photograph better. Go out for a day without a camera and just LOOK at the world around you.. REALLY LOOK at what takes your interest.. what makes you come alive. That and look at the work of others constantly. Don't get hooked in by the "glamour" of being a so called celebrity photographer.

as mentioned. Rankin is nothing special. he needs lots and lots of advice from real experts. problem is he does not to pay many of them ..... this guy shits on people that make him "Famous"

Hanzakbar, you have just outrageously embarassed yourself! I bet you hate people like Terry Richardson and Jurgen Teller. Listen to what these people are telling you; it's not about what camera you have, it's about your skill. You're essentially saying that driving a Ferrari around a track WILL make you post a quicker time than driving a Mondeo! With a professional driver behind the wheel, yes, with an amateur who only cares he's driving a Ferrari but can't keep it on the tarmac, no.

Go ahead and buy all the best equipment. Then realise you have zero talent, no creative vision, and then produce the sharpist average photos ever. Having the best gear wont turn you into a good photographer. End of story.
