This is a great list for a new card maker when trying to decide what is a MUST HAVE to get started, and what can wait until they’ve decided to move forward. Yes, crafting is an expensive hobby, but with honest reviews like this, it is possible to contain costs. Thank you!

I love that you do this honestly and with humor with younger crafters in mind. Refreshing and definitely entertaining. Yes, I am a firm believer that it is ALL subjective. What works for one and they love may not be at all the same for another. You really have to try things for yourself and form your own opinion. Thank you for being you! 😊❤

This was too funny, I've had a Misti since they first came out and now have 5 of them and never until you mentioned it did I notice a scripture on it. In fact when you said that I stopped the video and went to look and sure enough all of them have it, but most now are covered with Waffle flower Grip mats lol.

Gelli plates + acrylic paints + stencils + brayers = JOY. Oh, the backgrounds you can use. The Switch electric dye cutting machines due to it size and no cranking has it own cart in my area. I did acquire the Gina K die cutting crank machine due to the size and yeah the pressure dial which eliminates the need for extra plates, etc. I prefer the Tonic stamping platform over the Misti for size, no edges. Such videos evaluating tools is always fascinating. Fair evaluations.

I made my Tonic/Holtz rotary trimmer more helpful to me by putting up a command hook right on the side of my kneehole (at the desk where my knees and feet go!) - it holds my trimmer perfectly out of the way and yet right there when I need it! I have hung more hooks also for frequently used products, like my shape stencils, my idea book ( which is held with ring binders) and my Heat It tool. Still plenty of room for me, and when I need these tools, there they r. Enjoyed this - TFS!

For long-blade scissors, I like something that's non-stick (because I use things like Stick It sheets for fussy die cuts), though I'm also liking the Holtz ones because a really long blade does make it easier to cut straight. Here's a bonus tip: manicure scissors with a curved blade make cutting circles and curves so much easier. (I, too, hate fussy cutting. Again, for something with a straight blade, I like the ones that are non-stick. I've had other spring-assist scissors and didn't see much benefit.)

I've got blending/ink application tools up the wazoo. For Distress Oxides, domed blending foam on Ranger/Holtz watercolor paper is probably the best. With dye inks, just rubbing the brush on a lint-free dish towel (useful for so many things) until you don't see much, if any, ink, is probably the best way to clean them off. I generally don't even do that, because sometimes having just a little ink is handy, like when I want faint steciling on the inside of the card. I'll clean before I use them if I really want the exact color, but often a more complex color works fine. For some stenciling and for applying ink selectively to stamps, those squishy foam pouncers work pretty well. (Having to have two sets of these things-one for oxides/pigment inks and one for dye inks gets expensive.)

As a well seasoned card maker, I enjoyed this video. I have a MISTI it's still my go-to when stamping, but I don't stamp as much. I have the foiling machine to foil sentiments on occasions. I do use my BetterPress for sentiments much more. My die cutting machine is on its last leg, which is a Gemini Jr. Thinking getting Anna Griffin Empress machine because with age, it is harder to hand crank my Spellbinders Platinum machine. Favorites are heat gun, 3D embossing folders, distress oxide & inks along with Ranger Alcohol Inks and gelli plate. It's nice to have young talent come into the card making community. Best wishes to you.😊

I totally agree about the anti-static pouch! I hated getting the chalk all over my fingers. A solution for that is to clip the pouch with a binder clip, or something similar, to use as a handle. That works, but I still bought one of the brush type ones for the powder and use it all the time! 😂

Fun video! I loved the tiers even though I didn’t know what they were from 🤣. Just a suggestion! If you are investing in the BetterPress machine and their plates I would recommend getting their plates since they honestly foil better than the foil plates do. I’ve been foiling my BetterPress plates and they turn out fabulous! Then your plate does two things. It helps me justify the cost. 😊

The die brush works best with paper in the die.metal facing up and paper down on the foam pad. then roll back of the plate it pokes all the loose bits on to the foam. so when you take paper out of the plate almost all the bits are out on the foam which you can tap into your trash. Keeps image protected and easier clean up

This is fun and entertaining, thanks Ralph. For your issues with glue, I do recommend the MISTI Glue Press. I had it for a few months now, including a two week, no crafting, holiday, it just sits in its stand - and it has NEVER clogged once. I refilled it with various glues, they all seem to work. With the blending brushes, too, I had an epiphany moment this year: the huge big fluffy Spellbinders brushes did for me what no other ink blending tool has done: perfect ink blends! As for cleaning them, „I don‘t“ seems to be the right approach: you just need a separate set for die inks and Oxides (those seem to work great with the sponges for me - velcro issues aside) and one for each colour family and your good…
@ralphtyndall
@ralphtyndall Ай бұрын
I might need to look into those bushes! I'm a big fan of the Hero Arts blending brushes and have a full lineup of those. My brushes that got crusty after washing them were a fairly cheap set from Amazon...maybe that was the issue lol.
@kayfurnish8715
@kayfurnish8715 Ай бұрын
I agree with most of your opinions and descriptions! I never clean my blending brushes. I have enough for every need...meaning one for lights, one for mediums, and one for darks within each color group, plus a set for Distress inks & separate blending sponges for Oxides. Oh, and let's not forget one for white pigments (brush & sponge). Hmmm, I forgot I have one special brush & sponge just for Simon Hurley's Tropical Tango ink pad. Do you think I've gone overboard? LOL By the way, I love my Embossing Buddy! I've had it for probably 45+ years and it still works and keeps my oily finger prints off the card & I don't have to mess with refilling a container with powder like the latest "fad". The Gem Setter....What I don't like about the wax tip is it leaves a bit of waxiness on the gems/confetti. I would have moved the Scoreboard to the top tier because even a beginner wants nicely folded cards without cracks and ugly folds. The Misti - I laughed because I have 4 of them and I never noticed the Bible verse until you mentioned it on one of your other videos! Obviously, it didn't bother me, but someone could put washi tape over it if they are bothered by it. The tool itself was a game-changer for me. I love my tweezers & would move those up. I only use the reverse tweezers for holding stuff while the glue dries. Never got the hang of it even though I've tried them oodles of times. Great job and lots of fun to watch. Oh, I gave my Cricut to my daughter because I only used it about 4 times in 8 years. (Sorry this response is so long!)

I foiled long before the Glimmer. Yes, you can do cool things with the plates and with toner foils and the rest, but sticky embossing powder or liner tape or duo gel or tacky glue can give you some of the effects without much expense. Similarly, although I see good results with Better Press, I'm not sure the improvement in image quality is worth the expense (though at least people are coming up with other ways to use the plates).

As for the MISTI, there are alternatives available (at least here in the EU) and I for one happen to think they are better (gasp!): the lid is spring mounted so when you close it, the stamp does NOT touch your paper, you can check placement first and then stamp. Plus, about half the price 😊. The brayer may not be user error at all: I had the same experience as you - and the thought to try the Tim Holtz brayer and: totally different experience: the roller is so much softer and detachable for easy cleaning, brilliant! And to get my five cents worth in on this one, too: Glimmer, love the look, really do not like the disaster for the environment (foil on carrier foil on a plastic roll, wrapped in plastic and the ideal paper is actually also plastic coated…)

Great fun - for me I’d swap the layered stencils with the embossing folders and the standard tweezers are a must have too. ( but my hands are a couple decades older than yours 😉) I agreed with much of what you said and liked the way you explained each item. Interesting about the Misti, it would put me off to be honest. But I’m not in the US so have plenty other more affordable options.

I would agree with you on all of these. I purchased a lot of pops of color and another brand and I only use the glaze and sparkle ones. I thought it would be better to use them sending in the mail than rhinestone or sequins. Donating the colors. I found flat sequins and stick on flat embellishments from Lizi. Sorry most KZfaqrs have to use a disclaimer so people don’t leave rude comments or opinions on your content.

Love the candid opinions and agree with lots of them. Have you tried press plates? All of the problems I had with hot foiling are gone! Perfect fine detail foiling for me (with decent quality foil) and the plates are multi use. Inking and letterpress, embossing rather like an embossing folder, some plates come with stencils. It is my Give it to me Rachel and I agree with the spring loaded scissors, layering stencils, reverse tweezers, mint tape and definitely the waffle flower mat up there. Thank you again for your honest opinions

I find it very interesting to hear what different makers like and don't like. I am still pretty new to cardmaking, and it helps me when I want to buy something. I bought the Fiskars spring release scissors (sorry if that is the wrong name!) based on your recommendation in an earlier video and I am really glad I did! I have issues with my hands and wrists and these scissors are so comfortable to use. I love them!
@kcinca5410

Love this, of course, and, of course, I have to make comments. I hated the Fiskars spring assist scissors but LOVE, LOVE the Tim Holtz snips. Worked like a charm for me. I don't know why the Fiskars were so hard for me. Use the liquid pearls or pops of color to paint or put through a stencil. Forget about making "confetti" with it. I find it too difficult to be worth the effort. That's what confetti and rhinestones are for. I, too, bought that laser board. Complete waste of money. Worked like twice. Luckily, the website I bought it on gave me a full refund. Didn't even have to send it back. Can't wait for you to get into mixed media...pigment powders, gel plates. Thanks for sharing. I agree with almost everything you said although since I only really use KZfaq and Instagram I only got the mean girls reference. 🤷‍♀

Embossing folders (and the old plastic texture plates) and brayers are really handy if you use a gel plate. You can use the folders with the foam you heat and impress on a texture to make a stamp, too. You can use cut-out plates to partially emboss (e.g., a frame shape), which can be handy. I used a brayer before I gel printed to get smoother ombré blends, particularly handy with Kaleidecolor ink pads, which have five different colored pads in one.

Hi Ralph! Just last night I stamped a card and dropped the stamp on it, smearing the image. Ugh. And the ink blended background underneath was great and here I wrecked it. So, since the image was of twiggy sorts of florals, and I thought well it's worth a try, it's messed up already, I put shadows beside the floral stems with Stickles (over the smeared parts) and I think the card is salvaged! I also wanted to mention, when I have trouble getting my sandwich to feed through the Sidekick, if I move the paper and die back from the front edge a bit it goes through without a problem. If I have the paper and die way up at the front edge, that's when it seems like it's too thick to go through. I agree with your ratings, and what a fun way to present them! Cheers!

I've definitely found the same to be true with the sidekick! Usually trouble comes when the die is too close to the front edge of the plates.

Way to Go Ryan. What a fun way to talk about supplies. I kinda thought it was a bit funny to look at your supplies in a timeline I idea- I have been crafting for over year. In the beginning there were stamps and ink, heat embossing was the biggest wow!!! Then came the folders , again Wow.!!! But now a days, embossing folders have sooo much competition with foil etc.... So they are not that exciting, as back in the day, Hope you can follow my thinking. I also think as crafters we may have to limit ourselves on what path to go down as there is sooo much more to spend money on. Thanxs for all your content.

Ah, yes. The numbering system isn't as straight forward as Copic's. I tend to just use my own judgement by looking at my swatch sheet. Maybe there's a blending chart out there somewhere!

You're just such a fresh voice in the field. These rating are HILARIOUS. I am just about 100% in agreeance with you on these rating. I don't have a Cricut though. I was gifted a Big Shot for my birthday in 2021 and it was a complete gamechanger, right next to my Tonic Tim Holtz Stamp Platform. I do love my TH brayer too and any of my embellishment dots like those pearls or sparkly ones would put up to Get in Loser. My Sidekick is non-negotiable. Def a must have, also at least Get in Loser. I just got a goat hair anti static brush and there is no powder involved. It's a natural ionic effect. I have Spectrum Noir alcohol pens and find the brush tips really soft which has me going out of the lines a *lot* due to me pressing too hard (even when I lightly brush it across the paper). That's user error, I suppose, but I am looking for a new marker which has a firmer soft brush tip. Would you say the Ohuhu ones fit that bill?

Tip on copics. If the pen stays dry too long or you color on products like embossing etc it will plug your tip. I buy replacement nibs and refills from Dick Blick. Watch for a good sale!

Most of my stuff in the beginning was used. That helped me decide what I really wanted. It must be the IT tech in me but I lean toward electric cutters be it for dies or paper. I also finally said no to metal dies that match the stamps and added a scan and cut. I really appreciate designer sites that also offer a cut file for the stamps they create and are free. When you mentioned the verse in the Misti I was .. What??? Had to go check. I have never noticed that. Mine is about 4 years old. Of course that grid is always covered up LOL.. Enjoyed your thoughts and agree with many.

Apparently once the middle sponge part of the copic starts to dry up you it’s no longer revivable, you can refill them but they are beyond repair . Wish I’d know this a few years back as some of my copics arrived in that condition and I should have returned them for a refund.
@ralphtyndall
@ralphtyndall Ай бұрын
Yep...that was my finding as well! A few that arrived like that I was able to exchange immediately, but several only showed this issue a month or two after purchase and was only confirmed after several attempts at trying to refill them and replace the nibs.

Liquid Pearls and Pops of Color are basically fine-tipped bottles of acrylic paint, and you can use them for a lot more than trying to make little dimensional dots (for which Nuvo products might be a better choice for you). Ranger has a series of videos out recently that are short and show various ways to use them. I like getting a dendritic effect by smooshing them betweeen two pieces of coated cardstock. Acetate would probably work, too.
