It just screams racial ignorance and still subscribes to the "natives are savages and will get violent over (rightfully) defending their land". 2:08:53 Just a small correction: they actually do set up the nicknames earlier in the episode. When Rainbow complains about her nickname being put on her team jacket, Spitfire says (and I quote), "That's not how it works around here. We all have our nicknames on our jackets." She then asks Soarin' to verify, calling him by his nickname, 'Clipper'. However, I will grant you this: it's not MUCH set-up, and it's easy to miss, especially since we NEVER see the others in their jackets in this episode. But it IS there regardless.

In the episode with Twilight fighting Tirek, the animators did actually have a lot of fun with it. In fact, they actually fought over who would get to do the fight. One person didn't get the part they wanted, so they went HAM on the effects so as to have more fun on it. Apparently the animators actually had quite a bit of creative freedom on this show.

Funny thing about a Canterlot Wedding: Chrysalis replacing Shining Armor instead of Cadance would’ve explained why Celestia wouldn’t notice anything amiss (she wouldn’t know him that well personally like she does Cadance) and it would explain why only Twilight suspects anything (as it’s her literal brother). It would also give an excuse for how the Changelings infiltrated so easily, as Chrysalis legit heading the Palace Guard could just let them in. As for your criticism of Twilight’s attitude during it, I’d say it is more than merited. “Cadance” acts like a straight up jerk to everyone around throughout the episode, so I think that Twilight is definitely justified in being upset and in suspecting something. After all, she did know Cadance pretty well before, and being stressed doesn’t really give anyone a pass to verbally abuse others.

I’m gonna be real, when the crystal ponies thing was introduced, little middle school me somehow got into my head that princess cadence was a crystal pony and was the monarch of the region, i guess probably because i was watching episodes as they aired, i wasn’t making sure that i saw every episode, and it wasn’t uncommon for me to see episodes out of order. I remember seeing part 1 and 2 of princess cadence’s debut, that shit rocked and the song in part two slapped so hard

While The Perfect Pear does make sure to pull tear-jerkers, it’s quite realistic. Losing a parent, or both, is tough and you get to hear thousands of stories about them that you never even knew about. This episode, as well as Sounds of Silence (since Kirins are my fav mythical creatures), will always be my favorite because of how much I could relate to it.

i saw someone point out that they don’t mean magic magic, but the fact a good friendship won’t form unless you have all the elements and a spark of connection between you. magic is meant to be like that spark of connection also i’ve always loved that vinyl doesn’t speak as an autistic person lol. i’ve always read her as also autistic and non verbal because of her headphones and not speaking. i’m glad they kept her non verbal :)

I love early show twilight, she's my favorite pony honestly. A kind of mean and neurotic, bookworm pony who is experiencing having friends for the first time is such a fun idea for a main character and was also super relatable to me as a kid. I wish she kept a bit of her edge after she became a princess, she just felt like generic anime protagonist after that

The episode that bothered me the most was the episode with Rainbowdash's Parents. Its sweet that they're so supportive but it was borderline creepy and pushy. Rainbow set a clear boundary that they're way way WAY too enthusiastic about it and she got stressed. It made her parents upset and she was totally painted as the bad guy in the situation, which I think is toraly bullshit. Idk it just feels like "If you put boundaries when YOU'RE uncomfortable, then you should feel bad about it!" I despise that episode, as someone who struggles to set boundaries and never has them respected.

the wildest thing about Over a Barrel apart from the obvious bad parts is that it has one of the funniest skits in the entire series before that, culminating in Fluttershy's perfect punchline of "I'd like to be a tree." That entire scene is so good and it's right at the front of one of the show's worst episodes. Baffling.

Only criticism is that the audio kept dipping between high and low during the first half.

I watched this show a lot as a little kid, and I remember being so surprised when I went online after the episode where Twilight gets alicorned to find that SO MANY PEOPLE were FURIOUS about it. I thought it was cool lol. So did most kids my age! Y'know, the target demographic! Like, I don't have anything against older folks who were into the show; it's a good series! It really is! But I think a lot of older fans forgot this was primarily a kids show. This kinda this still happens today, like, a lot. Steven Universe, She-Ra, Voltron, Owl House, Miraculous Ladybug, the list goes on. I always see grown ass adults whining about a kids show doing things to appeal to kids.

It's called a cockatrice, sometimes a basilisk (though most modern depictions of basilisks are big snakes) and they're really cool. You kinda forget how simple things were back in the early seasons, the cast was so small it's no wonder why we resorted to giving names and personalities to every background character, cause we literally had nothing else to work with. I think there were only 7 or 8 named male characters in the first season. Also, it's weird to go back to when they would literally spell out the message of each episode in writing. Sure, they wouldn't exactly get subtler with their messaging in later seasons, but they would definitely get more tongue-in-cheek about it. You can also see and hear the team figuring things out as they went, especially with Applejack's noticably pitch-shifted voice and how wonky some of the animations can get. That all being said, there's absolutely a lot of charm to these early seasons. Also, it's just interesting to see what the show started as Vs. What it eventually evolved into.

I need to correct you on ‘A Hearthswarming Tale’ Starlight wasn’t upset ‘nobody liked her’. She just didn’t see the point of Hearthswarming and just wasn’t a fan of the holiday mostly because-like Snowfrost-she didn’t know the true meaning of the holiday.

This is because the original myth is that if you become too greedy, you will end up craving human flesh and becoming a monster who roams the winter forests hungrily, looking for your next victim. You may notice I am avoiding saying the myth's name, and thats because its actually very bad luck to say it. It is said if you say it, it'll attract them to your location. I've seen contemporary natives call the creature the "Winter Greed" or the "Winter Hunger" to avoid this. I think it sucks the show used the term ESPECIALLY because the spelling with the I is a legit spelling of the myth. I personally really liked the later seasons. Sure, they had more flop episodes than usual, but sue me for liking something that was fun! I think the off model faces are actually really nice (it just shows confidence) and the characters that feature prominently (starlight, trixie, sunburst, student six, etc) which I really like was also great! Definitely helped that those guys were ONLY in the later seasons, giving those a boost in my eyes

i remember how when the breezie episode first dropped i was so excited, having been a fan of g3 prior and specifically loving the princess promenade movie, only to then get absolutely crushed when they changed their lore entirely. with age im not really upset by it anymore but geeeez was i angry at the time. they had turned these cute little pony sprites into lanky, long eyelash-ed eyesores that look more like weird bugs than ponies.

Haven't finished the video yet, but I'm enjoying it so far! I will say that Lesson Zero is one of my faves BECAUSE Twilight is upset about something so minor. Mostly because I was an anxious kid and I found it relatable, because to you, the issue is not minor and getting brushed off can be frustrating. Also, yeah the way they portrayed the yaks was weird. I'm glad you brought it up. The show has always had some issues with how it portrayed non-ponies, even if their heart was in the right place.

As a kid, I hated the episode Winter Wrap-Up because I saw it too many times and eventually found the song annoying ahaha, but the rest of my family loved it. My parents still quote "she's awfully strong for little pony" to this day.

this is suuupper unrelated but as a kid, all of my family loved The Beatles, so i grew super familiar with all of their songs early on. also being a massive mlp fan, seeing so many references even in the episode titles like "Magical Mystery Cure" being an obvious play on "Magical Mystery Tour" (which was also my favorite episode at the time) and "Every Little Thing She Does" being based on the song "Every Little Thing" gave me so much serotonin. honestly, i'd love to see someone make an AMV of the magical mystery cure episode to Magical Mystery Tour or any of the songs on the album, like Fool on The Hill or Penny Lane.

Hey Shunks, this is a great video, but there's some editing issues that needed some ironing out. Specifically there's some audio volume inconsistencies, mislabeled titles and even some of the rankings themselves get cut off (such as with Times They Are Changeling). You can really tell a lot about the culture of the early 2010's Brony fandom by the fact that people were perfectly fine with an episode that tries to both-sides the issue of colonialism and implied that Native Americans "just had to learn to share", but people *hated* an episode that's message was basically just "have an open mind" to a point that Lauren Faust had to personally apologize for it.

I like a lot of your takes, but I feel like the Vinyl comment was a lil bad. Mute representation is so good, and i'm so glad they included it especially in that way. Mute people often do engulf themselves in musical media due to their lack of voice, so i dont think its a cop out.

I think Pinkie Keen is more about not having to understand everything. It can be really stressful to try to come up with or have an explanation for everything.

I adored Lesson Zero (and still, it's probably one of my favourite episodes of the entire series) because Twilight is so off her rocker, but it feels like we're getting aquainted with a different side of the character that there were hints of in season one. She's always been a little neurotic, but this LZ is seeing her hit peak neuroses. Twilight's hijinks are hilarious, Spike playing straightman is great, and the weirdness of the episode (the Sun acting like a clock, the fourth wall breaks, the way Twilight visibly deteriorates...), it's an episode that really feels different from season one, but in a good way. I will stan Lesson Zero in 2023 just as hard as I did in 2012 lmao. IMO the first five episodes of season two were a solid gold run.

I like the idea of the Series has three phases, the Golden age S1-3, the Silver age S4-6, and the Bronze Age S7-9, I stoped watching at the start of the Bronze Age because I felled out and wanted to watch something else like Steven universe, years later I went back to watch the rest of the Seasons 7-9, I appreciated the improved animation and I thought that the Final Problem was Alright, it wasn’t quite as Epic as the Lord Terik Vs Princess Twilight showdown.
