The servers for the original super mario maker game on the wii u are very close to shutting down. In order to reflect on that game, I thought it would be fun to look at the game’s event courses! These were used to unlock some of Mario Maker’s mystery mushrooms, which were sadly cut in Mario maker 2. These event courses range from a ton of different franchises like Pokémon, monster hunter, and more! So join me as I rank all 45 event courses from the original super Mario maker!

6:20 I will vouch for the Starfy games, they're pretty good 2D platformers. Only the fifth and final game was ever localized outside of Japan, but they're not the most complex games and have a similar feel to Kirby. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention that Wario has an extended cameo in the 3rd Starfy game. Like he just appears in a few stages he uses a bunch of transformations from Wario Land 4.

3:24 I remember watching the episodes where Arino made these levels. I do think a bit of the point was to make them Little Timmy levels, because Arino is a bit of a troll sometimes. They actually had Miyamoto play these levels, and HE FOR REAL fell for the arrow prank at 3:47. Miyamoto just turned to Arino and told him that his level was ugly and mean.

In Mario and Luigi paper jam, there are 2 bowsers and an army of soldiers referencing the paper world and its paper versions of M&L’s characters coming into the world of M&L, except for the Koopalings (I’m pretty sure they got killed by paper mario in color splash which probably takes place before paper jam) also there is a dry bones (for smash) next to the 2 bowsers referencing the secret boss of this game being dry bowser. (It’s one of my favorite games on the 3DS)

my personal theory on the koopalings thing is that if they had not only would it be the first time we ever saw the paper koopalings (paper jam came out in january 2016, colour splash in october 2016) but also there would be nowhere to really place SEVEN fights, heck they didnt even have anywhere to put an actual fight against morton iggy and lemmy in the game besides the final koopaling rush, having the paper ones were just unfeasible

I feel like the Koopalings could’ve had more space to be a thing in the Mario RPGs than all the reuses in NSMB. Mostly because they could actually expand on their personalities a bit more than just slight variations on effectively the same platformer boss. It’s one of the few things I like about Color Splash over Sticker Star, though I think SS still had the better fights.

I honestly forgot how good some of these event courses are. The Mercedes-Benz and Excitebike level had inspired me to make a similar concept of them back in the day. These set of levels are a huge step up to the premade sample courses found in 10 Mario Challenge.

6:05 from the footage you showed i noticed: 1) the 2 Bowser's represent Bowser and Paper Bowser who are the antagonists and final boss 2) the stack of ParaTroopas represent the Paper ParaTroopa enemy because it's a "stacked" enemy (a type of enemy from the Paper Mario games where multiple enemies attack as 1 enemy 3) the enemies in the Bowsers room might represent the scene where Bowser & Paper Bowser are making a speech to their army. While the Dry Bones don't appear in that scene, they are an enemy in that room when Mario, Luigi & Paper Mario reach Bowser's castle 4) the "Mario!" room could be a reference to the "Red Shell" Bros Attack

There were a good amount of references in the monster hunter one, the monsters tend to be large while the palico is quite small, and the koopas at the end are meant to be rathalos and rathian the king of the skies and queen of the land, they’re basically the mascots of monster hunter

I'd use Arino's costume as often as I could in my levels, as I just loved that one. (Especially the やったぜ！ he did when you powered up.) The only other costumea I really remembered were Chitoge Kirisaki, the Kanto Starters and Mercedes Benz Mario. I also remember the Necky costume being a pain to get, I don't remember if I even managed to get him.

The one time you say it makes sense for the level to be underwater it actually doesn't lol. In Splatoon, cephalopods' bodies don't mix well with foreign liquids due to they're bodies being made mostly out of ink, therefore, they dissolve if they enter water.

9:30 So, funny story, I actually got the NES Remix game on my 3ds, and I hated it. Not because it wasn't fun, it had some neat challenges and such behind. The problem was that, as a kid, when I found it at the store and got it, I was initially under the impression it would be a collection of nes games you could play in their entirety, like a nes classic edition sorta deal. So finding out it was just a bunch of mini missions *based* on the games and not the full games themselves made child me super fucking dissapointed, and I never went back to it.
