Fighting games definitely been eating this year. Mk 1 despite its flaws, is a massive improvement from 11. SF is in its peak right now, and then bro Tekken 8 is about to be insane

I picked up King of Fighters XV last week and I honestly think this is one of the best fighters ever made, I love it. It's a shame it took them a long time to fix the matchmaking. But as of now it's just so solid. Huge awesome roster, fun characters, fun combo system, some strategy with team building. Rollback netcode, crossplay with all platforms, and $15 on sale for the base game. Also a small note to your section about the 2020 picks. You showed some love to under-night which is awesome, but under-night [cl-r] was also a rerelease/updated version just like MK11 ultimate and Street Fighter V CE. I think the original under-night was from around 2013? So yeah, it was a year without many "new" releases except for granblue.

Interesting, the art style of SFV grew on me. I didn't like it at first but I eventually got used to it (outside of the feet). The art is better to me than SFIV though by a mile. It's funny you bring up UNIST because Under Birth originally was released earlier and UNIST was technically an updated version yet you didn't question it as much as Mortal Kombat. I honestly love UNIST and I hope I have enough time to actually be effective with Enkidu when Sys Celeste releases.

The best fighting games of the last ten years are Street Fighter 6, Samurai Shodown (2019), Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Soul Calibur 6, Injustice 2 and Super Smash Bros Wii U.

My favorite is CFC. yeah, it's just a collection of older Capcom games, but there's just a bunch of awesome picks. (Except puzzle fighter. That one sucks) also, you don't need cheat codes for certain characters.

Honestly the topic of Multiversus is very interesting to me. I feel that it did not deserve the GOTY over KOF XV. BUT it could have been deserved if the game was actually finished. The gameplay itself was really smooth and more inclusive than KOF so yeah i get why it won but honestly looking back. MV was a quality cash grab that defo feels like a scam after the shut down.

For me personally, GG strive is number 1, hands down! No question! Such a unique game n the visuals - top notch!!! Btw, the fact that mk11 og didn't win but the rerelease did... Its very... well... INTERESTING

I don't know what can top Tekken 8 for 2024. I used to be against Tekken, could never get into it, and then 8 showed up and now for the very first time I'm actually into Tekken. And I can't believe it after SF6, blew me away. But T8 is better to me in every single metric I can think of, I'm amazed at the 180 it made me do on this franchise. T8 is my fav fighting game of all time now along with FighterZ. I can't imagine other games beating it even in the coming years.

guilty gear strive remains as the game that comes to my mind when I thinka of "A brand new game turned instantly into favourite game", it's my absolute favourite fighting game of all time, I know how to play with almost all the characters, keep up with the pro scene, and got 5 friends of mine to buy it and play it with me (it wasn't easy, but that's what talking about it all the time does to a mf).

I will defend Smash for 3DS as being the superior version of Smash 4 as a game, and that it was hugely limited by its platform. In terms of the modes it beats Smash for Wii U almost across the board. The Mario Party mode is replaced by Smash Run which is an odd concept, being a semi-open world beatemup where you level up individual stats culminating in a final challenge where you compete directly with the other players, but it works surprisingly well and probably would've been a ton of fun on a home console with a ton of players. Classic mode while it isn't great on 3DS is way better than it is on Wii U. And here's my hot take, 8 player smash isn't a huge loss because on most stages you can barely keep track of anything happening on screen and is more annoying than anything. The biggest problem with Smash 3DS was that it was on the 3DS, and if its modes (namely Smash Run) weren't limited by the hardware, I think some of its more unique aspects would become series staples.

Just waiting for the inevitable super champion utltra turbo arcade edition of SF6😅. Would be cool to see a Soul Calibur ranking, my fave is the 3rd one. Also surprised to see no Tekken games won

Smash Ultimate is definitely one of my favorite games of all time for sure. I have like 1000 hours in it it's ridiculous but honestly if you never have, definitely check out Slippi Melee. Melee is harder to get into but putting time into it just feels so rewarding especially with rollback. I love traditional fighting games but Smash offers such freedom of movement and allows you to just freeform combos without worrying about max damage for everything

Honestly Jonathan. I agree with you there. That Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is if not my favorite fighting game. Even though it's a platform fighting game. As someone who has played smash for 10,000 hours and some tournaments I agree with the placement on the list but i would say the best fighting game of all time is marvel vs Capcom 2 If I were to make a list it would be 1 DLC characters like kazuya, aegis, Steve, min min are just broken and quite a few others should be re made 2 the buffer system is stupid nobody needs 6 extra frames to buffer something 3 the online 4 the game was made for casuals so the game still works in that sort of fashion

The game awards is really just a popularity contest, how The King of Fighters XV didn't win fighting game of the year is beyond me. It's like how the RPG of year category always excludes the Legend of Heroes Trails games some of the best RPG's of all time in favor of more popular WRPG's and their many expansions. Seriously it always bugs me to see expansions being nominated especially when the main game alwas nominated the year before and won.

I respect your reasoning for putting Ultimate #1, but I just can't look past just how bad the online is. A game where playing your buddies that live on the other side of town feels like playing vs someone on the other side of the world should not be ranked #1. Online is one of the biggest factors that go into determining what makes a good fighting game. DBFZ would be one of the best fighting games of all time if the online was playable from the start. Strive is the biggest example of a game having amazing online but nothing else to show for it. The gameplay is too heavy imo and trying to match against someone with their lobby system is brutal. Of your list I'd probably go: SF6>MKX>T7>DBFZ>Strive>IJ2>MK11>Multiverses>Ultimate>SFV

Brawlers like Nickelodeon, Smash Bros, Multiversus, PS All Stars. Etc just do not play similarly enough to a true FG making them too different to be comparable. The FG genre has been my favorite for decades and it is very telling that many people like myself are not fans of brawlers. Powerstone 1&2 were the only ones that were remotely playable for me personally.

Very un popular opinion but i have smash bros ultimate, and I’ve always still preferred brawlhalla, it’s just more competitive and feels faster

Two things: (1) I was holding my breath hoping those next three words weren't "because of C***d." But that would be asking for too much, lol. (2) I have more of these than I would have thought without seeing the thumbnail, BUT : Any fighting game that traded unlocking characters in-game for buying them and otherwise having no implicit reason to play the game is, to me, a failure, on some level. Tekken, Street Fighter, everyone, Included.
