Can't argue with the 30 million Genesis sales but the Dreamcast was the system where SEGA finally did every thing righ but it was too little too late.

I love the Genesis/Mega Drive as it was my first SEGA console, but I have to declare Saturn as my favorite SEGA console. The games are just so unique and the almost perfect arcade ports of light gun shooters, Capcom fighters, shoot em ups and Neo Geo ports really made this thing one of a kind. To this day I'll still plug it in and play Sega Rally Championship or Nights into Dreams.

I remember going to pick up my Dreamcast at 8am on 09-09-1999. It was a glorious but far too short run for that system.

Pretty solid list all things considered, though I do feel like the Game Gear got shafted. I mean, it did guzzle down batteries like there was no tomorrow, but people often forget that Sega knew this & tried numerous times to resolve this issue, most notably including an AC port in the top of the console so you could plug it directly into the wall rather than let it run off batteries, & making a rechargeable battery pack that could attach to the back of the system (unfortunately it's pretty useless now, but today you can just buy rechargeable double AAs like I did with my SGG). Personally I think the sprites on the Game Gear, while rougher around the edges, look more appealing & the larger screen then the Game Boy helped with screen limitations for platformers like Sonic Chaos, where you can actually see what's ahead of you rather than guessing. Also, understating the colour is pretty crazy since the original Game Boy had that vomit green display that really made you want to power it off after maybe 20-30 minutes, & the lack of an LCD screen means you couldn't see the Game Boy come night or even during the day unless you held it very specifically in a single spot. This issue is completely gone with the Game Gear, as it has a backlight & a full colour display, even including a brightness slider which would never be integrated in another handheld till the PSP brightness button in 2005. Lastly, this may be a very hot take, but I think there are more Game Gear games that hold up better then the Game Boy. When people talk about the Game Boy, you always hear the same titles: Super Mario Land 1 & 2, Links Awakening, Metroid 2, Kirby Dream Land 1 & 2, & Pokémon. As someone who doesn't like Pokémon or The Legend of Zelda, there really isn't much else to offer on the Game Boy or even Game Boy Color that's stood the test of time, since most the rest was truly shovelware or genuinely bad games. There are other great titles, but for a system like the Game Boy, many games just weren't suited for the platform. The Game Gear however, has a library of many games that hold up just for the colour alone. Lots of them underrated versions of games, or entirely new games like Arena Maze of Death, Virtua Fighter: Animation, or Sonic: Triple Trouble, made specifically for the Game Gear. These games do a great job showing what the system was really capable of. I may have just gone on a long rant about the Game Gear, but I do think the console is often pushed to the side when people don't see how cool it really was. The things it could do in 1990-1995 or so were really impressive & for the longest time, it was the only console that came anywhere close to the titan of the handheld industry: the Game Boy brand.

I don't think there's ever going to be as competitive as a consul generation as the 16-bit era. The fact that the Genesis did have the lead at one point is really impressive. The Super Nintendo did ultimately win. You could easily look up the list of best-selling consoles and you'll see that. But it was definitely the closest battle ever. At least the closest battle for first place ever. I came here after seeing your video on the Atari consoles and because you include pong console on that I was expecting to see the Sega Genesis classic and the Sega Genesis mini on this list. I was really hoping to Sega Genesis classic was going to be at the bottom of the list because ATGames really messed up with that one

Genesis is a retro modern Marvel. New games every year. Cursed Knight, life on Mars, Astebros, demons of asteborg, piers solar, paprium, xeno Crisis All new game All amazing. And Also a awesome RomHack community: mortal Kombat trilogy, Shredder's Re-revenge amongst others

Bit of misinformation here Dreamcast was £200 at launch (cheaper than both PS2 and Xbox when they launched) compared to £400 for the Saturn at launch, it was also off the shelf parts and a breeze to develop for compared to the Saturn.

The Pico actually outsold the Mega-Drive in Japan by over 500,000+ units! As for the Game Gear, I could forgive the fact that the hardware was going to be more expensive than the Gameboy; and I can forgive that even the Game Gear software would be slightly more expensive as well. But the battery life should've been at least 8 hours max. I mean, how can one expect their customers to commit long term to a handheld market if the battery life isn't extendable enough to justify long term use? I know this is probably going to up set some people, but would've needed to do one of two things here. a) Ditch Master System backwards compatibility to reduce hardware stress on energy consumption. Besides, the Genesis/Mega-Drive was already backwards compatible with Master System games already, so there was no reason to include that extra hardware. Or b) Ditch the back light screen to reduce energy stress on the hardware that runs the games!

Good topic; my first Sega console was the Master System and I had the Genesis and Saturn close to launch while sticking with them for the duration of their lifespans. I only had Sega CD for a short period of time and didn't ever have a Dreamcast as I was content with the N64 at the time (and also knew that the Dreamcast would only have a short run) and just rode that out until the Gamecube arrived. Anyways rankings: 1. Genesis 2. Saturn 3. Dreamcast 4. Master System 5. Sega CD 6. 32x 7. Game Gear I should mention that personally as it happened my time with the Sega Master System was more valued than the Dreamcast but I also can't deny that the combination of software library, third party support, and superior hardware has to elevate the Dreamcast.

Genesis was my first console so i agree with your list here but for me Saturn is better than Dreamcast.

This is a really hard list to make (I'm not bashing it), saying that as a Sega fanatic who owned every console at the time other than SG1000 and Pico. Genesis/MD has to be #1...even though I actually play Saturn the most and Saturn is my personal #1. I love the Dreamcast but the full Saturn library is SOOOOOOO much bigger especially now that we're getting 5-10 more games in english every year that it's hard to put Saturn behind Dreamcast. It sucks that the average gamer didn't realize how great Saturn was at the time so now the prices on real hardware/software are insane but luckily emulation is finally coming around. It's also hard to separate GameGear from SMS since the hardware is so similar...the libraries overlap a little but not entirely. I would give a nod to GameGear/SMS over Sega CD but only because the Sega CD library is so small. If you think of "best ten games" Sega CD is actually way up there in this competition. After Sega CD there's a clear line where you have failed systems or a real lack of reasons for retro gamers to discover them for the first time unless they have personal nostalgia.

The Sega list is much easier for me to put together than Nintendo, as not as many products to ponder there placements. While the Dreamcast is normally a fan favorite, and I did enjoy it, I just never saw the library as that great. And my 3 & 4 are probably interchangeable, as I like both systems, and depending on the day, they could easily swap spots. 1. Megadrive/Genesis 2. Saturn 3. Master System 4. Sega CD 5. Dreamcast 6. Game Gear 7. 32X

The Mega Drive is easily my favourite Sega console and the most successful Sega console in my opinion followed by the Saturn, the Dreamcast while it had some good games, the PS2 wiped the floor with it.
