As somebody who spent over a YEAR trying to program a “roll on walls” power-up for one of my games, the Wubba is everything I’ve ever wanted and more. I want an entire GAME where you play as that thing, the controls are buttery-smooth and the music is pure dopamine. Banger ending video for 2023, by the way. Thanks for the great year Odyssey!

So glad to see the metal mario effect as high as it is. It's nothing special in terms of gameplay but man it's brilliant to have metal mario in an electricity-based factory level. and the song is a banger too

Honestly I might like the Puffy Lift one the best. Being able to play as what is essentially just a level mechanic is so funny, and it's something you could only really do in a video game.

I actually like the ones that make you invincible, the star ones are super satisfying because of the invincibility and magnet you can rush and get a lot of stuff and killing enemy after enemy by running into them is a lot of satisfaction! and the lava one makes you play the game in a very different way while still maintaining the original movement, to me they are very much fun!

While I understand the thought process behind “invincibility removes the challenge”, I feel like looking at the abilities that way ignores the rest of their design elements. So, to counterpoint: “If this wasn’t invincible, would it be fun?” - Balloon: Not in the slightest. What really sells the balloon form is its fittingly-floaty controls. However, they’re also finicky and imprecise, which would ruin any attempt at ‘challenge’ that could be made. If you wanted to add challenge, you would need to remove most of the enemies, or scale back the floatiness, both of which arguably defeat the point. - Lavaproof: No, probably not. The dark-level mechanics make the fire a visual treat, but also obfuscate the platforming or enemy placement. More lighting would need to be added to make the challenge fair, but this would also take away from the contrast of the darkness and fire, and frankly that just wouldn’t be as interesting. - Freefalling: Maybe. The Special level is certainly good, but it also has the age-old problem of “enemies dropped on me from offscreen and I had no warning”, which I’ve seen 90% of players die to at least twice. I don’t think the first level would be ‘more fun’ without the stars, though - you’d either need to ditch the time-limit or make the whole segment longer. To me, the fun part is trying to hit all the enemies while you’re invincible. It’s like how that wall-jumping poison level in MM2 was a late-game stage; because that kind of challenge can be extremely frustrating to practice. I can tell that difficulty and obstacles are clearly something you value, but I feel like tagging the “fun invincible romp” powers as “terrible” is kind of harsh. We’ve all played Mario Maker 2 before, so I think we all understand how “difficult” and “interesting” are not exactly the same thing. :V

Aw come on! The Shooting Stars effect can’t be THAT bad! I think it looks pretty and it gives you a satisfying rush!

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the editing of the Jump Jump Jump section, as it beautifully cuts between the two levels while still staying accurate to the beat of the song.

Favorite Wonder Effects: Boat from Evade the Seeker Bullet Bills (this is my favorite period), Snowfall from Pokipede Pass, Dragon from Dragon Boneyard, Silhouette Stretching (Specifically in Fluff-Puff Peaks Palace because of the music), Airship Lasers from all Flying Battleships, Wacky Pipes (specifically from Swamp Pipe Crawl), Spikey Dance Number, Giant Conk, Wubba Form, and Rrumba Form.

Honestly the super star dash effects were some of my favorites in the game because it just feels satisfying to blaze through everything like a rocket and the feeling of invincibility is so fun

It's an excellent sign of the game's quality when I see a ranking of the Wonder Effects, think the bottom ones deserve to be higher, but then realize it's just because they're all great. The only other rankings to make me feel that way are for the galaxies in Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, my literal favorite games of all time. Also nice touch using the Tears of the Kingdom theme for the skydiving Wonder. 👀

The "Top Down View" Wonder Effect reminds me of RPG Games for whatever reason and seeing it for the first time *in game* was a pleasantly amazing surprise to me. 😊 Thankfully I've also never watched any other trailers for the game outside the reveal one (for obvious reasons), as well as that entirely SMBW dedicated Direct, so that the surprise for this Wonder Effect (just like many others) wasn't ruined out of my personal experience with the game. Definitely in my Top 5 favorites for the concept alone, very fun and creative for a 2D Mario game.

I feel like some of the super star complaints, such as the free fall or floating wonders aren't that big of a deal cause you can simply avoid the stars if you don't want to use them, unlike in the star rain wonders

I'm doing a course of video game development, and one of our trimesters was 'Game a Week'. We basically had to make a prototype of a game inside of a week for 13 weeks straight. One of them I tried to recreate the number 1 effect here, the TopDown. There was just something so engaging about that effect that I just had to try and recreate it myself.

This video makes me want you to do a "What if Mario Wonder in Mario Maker 3" kind of video. discusing the Wonder effects from the perspective of "Which onces would be the ones most fun to use in a level creator" sounds like an interesting concept, and the same goes for ithe various other Wonder things, like the badges and enemies

I actually like the balloon transformation, feel like it mimics the bloomps mechanics well, although I think you should've shrunk like they do upon contact with any non bloomp enemy since they bounce off of you, along with making stars less prominent.

I get that it is stumped that they used the boring design for King Boo but I think that the cool design represents him having more power in the haunted mentions in the Luigis Mantion games rather than the normal ghost houses found in the normal Mario games (I think).

You seem to be very very invested in the challenge of an effect, which makes my thoughts quite different from yours, since I find being invincible pretty fun

17:10 I did this one wrong, I didn't think about the fact that you have to hit the spike ball from the side. I rolled it over the top of Mario making it harder, but I enjoyed it more when I did that.

Now that i think on it, all the wonder effects from Leaping Smackrel, The Hoppycat Trial Hop, Hop, and Awaaay, Here Come The Hoppos, Pipe Rock Plateau Special Bounce, Bounce, Bounce, and Flight of the Bloomphs can all be grouped as one effect; Mega Enemies. Also 16:03 technically the wonder effect is the Titular "Desert Mystery" Also 20:23 that's not really King boo as after the effect goes away in both cases it's shown that the boo returns to being a normal boo the whole time

You know in the falling mario, floating mario, and balloon mario effects you can just avoid the stars. There’s nothing forcing you to collect them and it’s not like the game’s making them hard to avoid, heck in my first playthrough I completely missed the fact there were stars in those effects until they were halfway over

imo you're a bit too harsh on the invincibility effects, this isn't meant to be the most difficult game in the world, and the wonder effects are just meant to be funky twists, not necessarily challenges.

As someone who likes the Goomba transformation, I'd compare it less to the Odyssey Goomba stacking and more to Captain Toad gameplay in 3D World and Treasure Tracker. Clips your wings but forces you to be creative in your platforming strategy.
