In my own head canon, I always thought about how Gary has had an interesting relationship with Golem. His Nidoking took out Giovanni's Golem with ONE TACKLE, but then Nidoking loses to Melissa's Golem taking him out of the Indigo League. He must've thought Golem WAS a Pokemon worth using only to have it taken out by ONE Dragon Rage from Ash's Charizard 😂

@Seth Williams Pikachu has taken down legendaries so yeah anime rules make no sense. At least now in the world championship rematch Pikachu has the type advantage

@Seth Williams fair enough but even in SM Pikachu had losses it shouldn't have if you tale into account continuity but Pokemon series is like that. Journeys is grooming Pikachu to be a world champion having the rivalry with Leon's Charizard. It is very fitting both in story and in real world that essentially the 2 mascots of the Pokemon franchise for 25 years be the ones to decide the world champion

Gary did talk about how he rotates his Pokemon to get bigger and stronger not to mention he actually had his 'giant' Krabby on hand in Showdown at the Poke Corral. So, I do believe it DOES have battle experience. However, not enough to evolve I suppose.

@4:05 the way the anime fooled you about Umbreon's use in battle was the same way it fooled me about how Turtwig was a speedy turtle. Damn you Ash and Gardenia...

In Gary episode we understood that we have to pass the trial to be a project mew member. But in special preview we saw that the guy having urshifu told " if I wasn't here u and ur Pokemon were already dead, you are disqualified" ( I saw that preview in English sub) we understood that they failed the trial mission.

It'd be cool to see how a full battle with Gary would look today. (Yeah, he's not in competitions anymore, but Electivire and Blastoise show that his prowess is still there even after Johto. Plus, Alain and Kukui showed that being in research doesn't mean you can't also be a stronger battler as well)

The challenge with ranking Gary's Pokemon is that we only know a small percentage of them. We can't even say for certain that Dodrio even evolved from the Doduo seen in Showdown at the Po-Ke Corral. We know he caught multiple Pokemon of the same species. Also, a bit of a correction; Krabby wasn't Gary's first Pokemon. He was his first CONFIRMED Pokemon. In Mystery at the Lighthouse, Oak says that Gary had already caught 45 Pokemon. I'm sure Gary had a bunch of Bug and Flying-types, especially early on.

Also failed all to mention the Pokémon shown before Gary vs ash match when ash looked him up on the computer. Showed that Gary had alakazam, fearow, pinsir, houndoom, skarmory, and kingdra as well.

Given how much he values his Umbreon, I like to think that Gary's Eevee was the first ever Pokémon he caught himself after receiving Squirtle, like how Ash's was Caterpie, Mays was Wurmple, Dawn's was Buneary, and Serena was Pancham.

Electivire caused Moltres to fly away. Except it didn't do that alone, which diminishes that feat and Moltres was roughed up by Blastoise beforehand as well. However, still agree with its second place though, but Mystic does have a tendency to hype up feats that don't deserve it.

Problem is that this cannot be Ash's last season (Or Ash leaving in general), because Ash is the human face of the franchise and Pikachu is the overall mascot. At this point, its way to late to replace Ash, especially since the new protag will also do a badgequest and has a Pikachu as its main partner (Due to it being the franchise mascot).

I actually had Gary battle May in my Hoenn high series it was a 3V3 battle with May using her Blaziken Glaceon And Venasaur Whilst Gary used his Scizor Blastoise And Houndoom (we never see Gary use his Houndoom in the anime but we know he has one alongside a Pinsir and Fearow) The battle was incredibly close with Mays Glaceon actually defeating Houndoom despite the type advantage but Gary's Scizor just got him the W

The main problem with Gary is that we never really see a full team from him. Blastoise is his ace, umbreon is his second in command, and Electivire was another strong member. Nidoqueen and arcanine had some moments but still not showcases like the other top 3 Pokemon Gary owns.
