Since Solus released an update in July, I think it became great again. They went through some hard times with the main maintainer leaving the party (and working on a different project: Serpent OS), but they are back with it now, they are keeping up with the Blog and Solus really does feel fresh. They fixed a few annoying nuances (like crashing when going into the multitasking settings, breaking, if it doesn't get updated out of the box, etc.). Budgie also feels refreshing, partially because it is now more of an independent project. I really feel, like Solus deserves more love. It is very unique, it is a rolling release, while maintaining that stability and usability. Plus, it is the quickest complete distro, that I have experienced. Alpine is quicker, but not suitable as a daily driver and NuTyX has its ups and downs.

I've played around with 45 different distros over the past quarter century, dual-booted Ubuntu & Windows for about a decade, but I currently run Linux Mint and/or LMDE6 on my two desktops and laptop. I gave Bodhi with the Moksha desktop a try recently on my secondary system and loved it, but eventually switched over to LMDE6. Haven't used Windows in years.

My understanding is that right now the Pop!_OS team is focusing on developing the new Cosmic desktop environment, and are less focused on updates. Once the new Cosmic desktop environment is released, I think they will get back to keeping Pop!_OS more up to date like in the past.

I would personally put Mint in Good. Amazing for beginners, but you will probably want to go elsewhere when you learn more about Linux. Mint is a little limited and the packages are on the older side. Most Linux users tend to specialize in specific fields and Mint is more set up to be a catch-all, with most emphasis on being easy to use.

I have tried LMDE5 (worked great) and LMDE6 (had some problems I didnt have with LMDE5 probably due to the disppearance of the driver manager). Then I tried Nobara and it had good language input options (writing different languages). And games worked much better than on LMDE. But other than that it felt clunky and the German translation was really bad (while the German Mint translation is the best thing I have ever seen).

Actually Solus OS has had a new ISO released recently. I like it… but would put it under bad because of the lack of packages, and it seems like a dying distro. The Budgie Desktop environment is my favorite DE though, and as long as you have a fairly modern PC it runs well and has a strong Windows 10 similarity to it but it’s much more customizable.

It seems to me that you categorized Alpine Linux too narrowly or hastily. I want to let you know that I've been using this distro for more than 3 months as my daily driver on my laptop. I don't deny that it was somewhat tedious to resolve certain issues during the setup, and I even use Gnome as part of the challenge :-), but today everything is going perfectly. Solus was great and along with OpenSuSE TW, was the only rolling releases I typically recommended However, the past / relatively recent upheavals in the dev team, mean I won’t risk Solus ever again. These days I’m into ‘set and forget’ distros rather than tinkerer/ hobbyist alternatives, so Open SuSE’s Micro OS Desktop and Fedora Silverblue win out for me. Beyond these, the top tier should include OpenSuSE TW and Leap, Fedora WS and Linux Mint or Zorin OS for would-be converts to Linux. Ubuntu? - too many decisions taken by Canonical have alienated me. I would say though that Ubuntu Budgie is a very stylish distro and great implementation of the Budgie DE. Top tier, maybe, if you are better disposed towards Canonical than I. They seem to have too much influence even over the community flavours sadly. UB is very good within this ecosphere all the same.

"Kali Linux is not recommended" is a very right point. However, everything you said behind this is wrong and "out of date". 1) From kali website and my experiences, the kali linux doesn;t ship with root user by default now. 2) Kali is basically a toolbox for penetration testers and ethical hackers. So it just provide the convenience for these people, and this is great. Not everyone want to build every tool from scratch. Anyway, this is a good video and please make more🤯

I think it is best stick to distros with a strong dev team, longevity and track record. Many derivatives are fairly pointless, although the likes of maybe Mint and Gecko that bring added value to the disto they are based off are welcome. Go to the source distro in most cases. You did’t even discuss the likes of OpenSuSE - Leap, TW and the immutable Micro OS all top tier especially if you value security and reliability. TW the safest option for a rolling release IMO. Endeavour maybe the best Arch based distro? Not an Ubuntu fan for the reasons you hint at and more, but Ubuntu Budgie is the best Budgie implementation I think. The UI / UX choices are brilliant. So good, that I might put it in the top tier, **despite** my distaste for anything Canonical. Of course, there is no best distro, just the one that subjectively works best for each of us - and however we define ‘best’.

I've been playing around with Antix on my old eeepc 701, and it's pretty good. Though it is definitely one of those build it yourself distros, especially if you need to keep the install size below 4gb. The small screen on 701 makes most desktop environments pretty unwieldy. But I have been enjoying the Herbstluftwm tiling window manager on Antix. I've used Puppy on that machine too, but there was something about it that I didn't like. Though I can't remember what that was. Both of those distros still have 32 bit versions though, which is great.

Is RHEL source code being closed gonna affect Fedora?
@TheRosswise
@TheRosswise 9 ай бұрын
@@shrkwt No, Fedora is upstream. Fedora is sort of a testing branch for RHEL, and is a community project. RHEL going closed-source is mostly because their corporate consumers were starting to migrate to free-of-charge RHEL clones like Alma or Rocky Linux. But at the end of the day Linux is open-source code, and that isnt affected by RHEL closing public access to their source code.

I’m slightly biased since my favorite OS is Zorin. Anyway, it’s funny how different our experiences are using the same OS; even on the same hardware. Fedora might have the latest and newest this and that, but my user experience of Fedora is like driving a Cadillac, with the smallest engine option, from the 70s in really mint condition. So, it’s shiny, big as whale, pretty reliable and looks smashing, if you into that kind of thing. But it’s not super fast and cumbersome to move around. Zorin, on the other hand, might be old, but it’s like driving a modern, medium sized Subaru with a reasonably powerful enginge. It’s snappy, very easy to drive and very stable. I can do any kind of modification I want and it will still be stable. What more do I want from a daily driver? That being said. I like Fedora too. It’s kind of the flagship of Linux distros. So, I say live and let distros live.

I just don't see any need for the other sub-distros unless you're a very new linux user and you need extra care with the desktop. Don , I had to hit that stop button at 7:28. I like your channel and I find it quite informative, but... I've been a Linux user and admin since 1999, my first distro was Slackware, and one thing I can say, the best distro is the one that works for you. Not how it looks, not how often they update the base but does it serve it's purpose and is it stable. I've tried many distros over the years, some of them don't even exists anymore. So, my issue with your review in first place is that You cannot slam a distro as BAD just because it's OLD, or using 20.04 base or whatever. Or the developers are too slow to post updates. These are not benchmarks in any way. I agree with you when developers start acting like MS and Apl, pushing, even forcing their ideas to the user in the case with Ubuntu, Canonical and some others. Given most Linux users have knowledge well above the average PC user, I find distro rankings a bit odd and should focus on function rather than looks. Let everyone try and choose. That's why it's called Free software. As I said, the best one is the one that suits you the most so in my case as main desktop MX with KDE and Liquorix kernel, for my kids gaming desktop dual boot Mint/Zorin with Steam, I've Mint laptop for every day use as well as Mint 18 laptop for specific tasks and software that wont run on anything newer. I noticed that Debian 12 uses the Linux Kernal version 6.1. I have a Ryzen 7 7800x3d and 7800xt gpu; they require Linux kernal 6.4 and up; therefore I can't use Debian right? I noticed Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is coming out on April 25th, 2024 and will use Linux Kernal 6.8. If anyone know other distros which will work with recent gpus or cpus please let us know thanks. I don't about Fedora but it didn't work good with my laptop with a Nvidia rtx 3060; but Ubuntu 22.04 worked better and easier to use. Perhaps, the next Ubuntu you will have an option to use snap or not; seems like 1 of the major reasons not to use it.

I currently use Debian with Distrobox containers (think: Debian Sid/Unstable on top of Debian 12 Bookworm/Stable) and Flatpak to get around older packages. Some stuff, like the DE, being left absolutely alone for the majority of a release's lifespan is a critical advantage for production, as I can't stand the weird decisions of GNOME or the spurious breakages of KDE, so I stick to XFCE since it has good synergy with Debian. For the sake of KDE, if you absolutely need KDE, Debian Testing/Unstable is the only way as 5.27.5 is WAY too buggy for daily use from my experience. Immutable distros like Silverblue are great, I've daily driven it for about almost a year, but I am certainly waiting until the new dockerfile based system is production ready for 39, maybe 40. Solus did have a new release back in July 2023, except the way they went about the announcement left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. It's one thing for a founder to ghost a project, it's another to say you did so while working on another one in the background.

In my little Box o" Distros, full of USB sticks, way back in the back corner, sits a little 8 GB drive with Mabox Linux on it. It's my guilty pleasure. My secret sin. I love it and I hate it. Picture Manjaro without the a$$-hattery on the backside and there you have it. It's based on Openbox, so it is indeed lightning fast, but it's also a different learning curve to your average experience, and I'll tell ya', it's frickin' *beautiful*. If you've ever messed around with window managers, you know they are usually kind of...austere. But the Mabox team has kicked it up thirty notches. If nothing else just try the live USB and play around with it. But mostly, just LOOK AT IT. I'm triple booting Linux Mint 21.2, Sparky Linux, and Garuda Cinnamon. Linux Mint is my favorite all-rounder. There's just enough hand-holding to get past the tedious stuff, and it's so smooth and well-put-together. Garuda is my answer to when I feel that recurring Arch draw, but it's ten million times less tedious than Arch. It'll probably be what I install on my gaming laptop when I convert it from Windows 11 one day, if I don't go the Nobara route. Sparky is deb-based, but is curated to a comfortable point without being stuffed full of stuff you'll never use. It kicks around much fast (on my machines) than Mint does...it feels lean and mean. My goal is to run Fedora on everything I have. The only thing stopping me is one Windows program I use quite a lot, but which is notoriously hard to get to run on Linux. The few successful guides to installing it require a Debian distro, so I'm stuck in that realm, at least on my writing machines. But I LOVE Fedora.

It's ... I don't know ... very personal and use case specific.Alpine is great for docker images for example, I don't even know if it's trying to be a desktop distro as well. Debian got better with one ISO that contains binary packages. Before it's was only good for servers imho and it was not great desktop. I never particularly liked Ubuntu without specific reason, but it has good release cycle. My feeling was like that kubuntu was made with zero effort and I prefer KDE. openSUSE is underrated imho, but it has it's issues: btrfs is somewhat hard to maintain and understand, leap is way too conservative, tumbleweed is the exact opposite, but i'm really curious about slowroll which might be competition to Fedora. Fedora is great, i would just prefer less updates, I don't need a new kernel every week. But in my opionion Fedora, CentOS, openSUSE, Debian, Arch?, Ubuntu, Mate are only distros worth using. Rest has various problems such as lack of support, user base, quality, packages and are focused on one thing (desktop) and lacking in other areas.

the suspense builds as you see a daunting list of distros and taking a bit of time explaining each one… will he finish them all? 😅 correction on kali: they haven’t had root as default user since 2019. with the start of 2020.1, it defaults to kali as a normal user with sudo access. but i agree it’s not that useful for the general user.

Alpine Linux is not actually a bad distro, it's just that the distro itself is not designed for desktops but rather for servers and iot stuff. The pros of using this distro is that it is really lightweight, secure.

I tried Nobara Linux and revision 38 kinda worked then got borked on 2 PC's, tried 37 and 38 and it failed to boot, with rufus and ventoy, called it in discord but they never answered, using Garuda Linux for gaming, Mint for old hardware, Even thou you are right about manjaro, it works for me flawlessly with what I do, issues I get in all distros, is impossible a perfect one. By the way, I had lots of problems using Debian and its clones, rater go back to kubuntu or the likes but not ubunto or gonme at all, is just not me.

That's what most people in the Linux community just cannot grasp. I use Manjaro, not because I like the expiring certificates and other drama, but because every other ready built Arch distro either fails to boot on my machine or updates and bricks itself immediately after installation. Mint does the same on my machine after the first update. At least Manjaro lasts about a year before irrevocably killing itself. It's all about your unique set of hardware. What works for me, just won't work for you. Check the multitude of conflicting reports on ProtonDB, often on the same distro, with the same version of proton. These tier lists are stupid and only stupid people would take them seriously. Do your own testing and find which distro works best for you.

used to like ElementaryOS, but honestly they should just switch to Debian considering how small the team is, it still feels very buggy, on my machine even the Plymouth on startup are like wrong size icon, window snapping is weird, and they still use that browser, sure it is usable now, but gnome has everything out of the box compared to the current state of eOS, the only thing i like about it is just the code text editor (weird name, considering ppl associated it with vscode, but still better than gnome-text-editor)

I just installed linux mint the other day. Back when i was in college, i played with fedora and centos. I always understood that fedora was red hat's test distro, and centos was the most stable, basically red hat itself.... I am not a crazy Linux nerd, so correct me if im wrong. Although, i do know that ubuntu is meh tier. I was never a fan of their UI to be honest.

Old Network/System Admin here.... IMO.... It was Ubuntu 16.04 when Canonical started to ruin Ubuntu. 16.04 was the 1st version that was not 100% tested before release. More or less turning it into a Beta that the "End-User" would help debug. Sounds like what Microsoft did with Windows 11 doesn't it!?!?!?! That's when I decided that I would not have any BETAS in my server room. I used 14.04 until EOL and stuck with my other server picks: Debian, Slackware and Redhat. Now... Redhat is off my list this year.

It is not true that Solus Os is not updated. The last version is 4.4 plus, you can read a lot of information on the blog about the distribution itself, what happened. And what will change in the future, so I don't see a problem. The only drawback is the somewhat modest application repository, although you can use the flatpak, and app image applications. Moreover, it works very well and is stable. There are no problems after updating the system, that something went wrong, etc.

When I came back to Linux years back I started with Ubuntu and quickly to Kubuntu but after a while it was clear it was having problems and I was hearing about the privacy issues. I went to Manjaro and it was great at first but then it started happening where things would break down and even after new installs so then I moved to POP. Now I’m starting to have boot drive issues with POP and I was thinking of just going straight Debian and you’re making that more likely

I think Arch Linux gets ratted on too much. It really isn't that hard to maintain. It's the best OS if you want to build everything from the ground up and are happy to learn. On the scale of full control to no control it is a solid 9 and maybe for some people this is hard. But I've run it for 6 months with Hyprland, the only issue I have had with it was after the release of Plasma 6 some KDE stuff on Dolphin didn't work with my theming, but that was quickly fixed
